3M's Mini-Projector Mystery Company Turns Out To Be Samsung
Back in March we learned that 3M would partner with a "leading consumer electronics company" in an attempt to be the first to market with a mini mobile projector. After months of speculation, 3M's CEO George Buckley has revealed that the mystery company in question will be Samsung. He also revealed that the price point for the device would be between US$200-US$400, which is US$100 less on the low end than the previous estimate.
We also know that 3M is still planning on launching the device later this year, but it is unclear whether or not this device would be available as a stand-alone product or whether it will be integrated in Samsung devices. Although, given the interest in applying this technology to mobile phones, integration into Samsung products seems likely. [Twin Cities via About Projectors]

I'm curious how they are going to get over the focus issue with an embedded device. Their stand alone prototype had a little knob on it you had to constantly fiddle with if you moved it. To me 3M seems to have a stronger stand alone app than a integrated one.

lets see
1. 3m's projector is based on LEDs! which means faded corners and a brighter center.
2. it has an adjustment wheel to set focus.
3. low resolution because the LCoS display is 800x600 (last i knew)
4. LEDs are on all the time so it might have a fan.
5. the lens is 12mm so i didn't think you'll see it in a cellphone soon.
6. any news as to the batteries run times?
now comes to how are you using it.
in a dark room - screen size is 50" to 60" dia.
in and office light setting. maybe 17"
no doubt its the best LED mini projector right now!
better ones are coming out soon!

@OG512: True, and I'm sure some folks will actually use it for that, but you KNOW the rest of the world is going to engage in a massive YouTube fest when it's finally available. ;)

I would get this to setup a virtual corner office in my cubicle.

only if Stewart make a tiny screen that's overpriced enough to go this this tiny, overpriced, impractical Samsung/3M device.

@Saj:
Laptop with an integrated projector; I'm coming.
Slartibartfast
3M? does that mean you can peel an adhesive back off and stick it places?
deadsylent
Samsung? Oh, gimme a break.
NightBlade
Laptop with an integrated projector.
Its coming.
Saj
awesome, now all those $600 phones will cost $1000 and still break just as much (if not more due to the added hardware).

I, too, am enthusiastic about the mini-projector concept.

@VirreVojj: you gotta crawl before you walk and walk before you run. but in all honesty that would be a sweet app in cell phones these days. projected video messaging! or for the business minded, powerpoints and spreadsheets put on the wall of any conference room for a presentation. no more of lugging back and forth that black bag with the projector inside that has to be set up before the meeting!
OG512
Great! Now make a holographic one. :)
