Notes: The Brazilian Band Called Inimigos da HP (Translation: Enemies of HP)

Posted by Brian Lam at 11:35 PM on May 22, 2008

On my last day in São Paulo, the good people we were working with on an upcoming Portuguese version of Giz with took us to some nightclub with an open roof and lots of beautiful younger people dancing and making out. Anyhow, here's the gadget party of this story: There was a band there playing called Inimigos da HP, or Enemies of HP. Yes, that HP. Apparently the members started playing together in college, but are mostly former engineers and industrial designers who were forced in their previously not-rockstar life to use HP calcs every day. I like their music. Now I'm in Rio, taking a long weekend. Going to the beach. I should have played more Wii Fit. [Wiki, Amazon]

Hollywood Attacking Film Grain For Blu-ray

For me, the first "ooooh" moment when I got my first HDTV was watching SportsCenter...and I don't even watch sports. Never before had I seen such a crisp, vibrant image in my life. It didn't look real. It looked more than real.

The Coolest Internet Network Operation Centers

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:15 PM on May 22, 2008

This is a shot of the interior of AT&T's Death Star, their stunning global network centre in Bedminster, New Jersey—where they work to suppress good wireless reception and run their Random Billing Generator. It looks more amazing than NASA's, but it's not the only cool network operation centre running the intarwebs, as you will see in the gallery. Updated: with specs on the Death Star in New Jersey after the jump.

Iomega Introduces Leather 250GB Hip Flask, Er, eGo Drive

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 10:45 PM on May 22, 2008

The people who brought you the camouflage eGo portable USB hard drive have traded the hunting rifle for the meerschaum pipe: the leather-clad 250GB eGo, which goes on sale today for just over US$140, will look good in any study, but best in ones where there's a roaring fire and many leather-bound books. Iomega takes pains to note that this is the only leather portable drive on the market. Our guess is that, as stylish as it is, it may remain so for a while. (Second photo after the jump.) [Iomega]

Sony To Make Bigger OLED TVs Soon

Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:32 PM on May 22, 2008

That Sony OLED television isn't bad—it's just a little too tiny for the family to gather around comfortably. Luckily Sony has announced that they will indeed be investing more money (read: US$210 million) into their OLED manufacturing to produce "even larger" sized panels for release sometime between April 2009 and March 2010. That's good. Since they have some competition soon. [digitimes]

Indiana Jones' Theme Secret Lyrics Uncovered

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:00 PM on May 22, 2008

Indy IV's out! But what most people don't know, however, is that the classic Indy theme now comes with new lyrics. Apparently, John Williams writes lyrics for all his compositions—even while they won't be sung—as a way to keep them in character. Gizmodo has uncovered those lyrics after days of arduous investigation and heavy drinking, following up a scoop by Alex Balk. (Note: lyrics contain foul language.)

Star Wars Makes World War II Even More Scary

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:56 PM on May 22, 2008

Looking at these images, if Star Wars was real, we would probably be in a lot of trouble. Fortunately, this is just a site dedicated to transforming real vintage photos into unreal scenes using Photoshop magic tricks. Some of them are better than others, but all of them strike me as completely believable, as you can see in the full gallery after the jump.

AMXD Puts Fighter Pilots' Piddle Packs Out of Business

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:05 PM on May 22, 2008

Please, cease your screaming at the back, ladies, and feast your eyes on the AMXD, aka the "piddle pack." Developed by a Vermont firm, the trunks have a built-in hose and pump (stop boasting, I've heard it all before) which allows fighter pilots to relieve themselves during missions. Until the AMXD, or Advanced Mission Extender Device, came along, the fliers had three options open: diapers; keep it all in, causing potential bladder damage; or let it all out, running the risk of debilitating headaches—or even crashing the plane. Notes: Indy's Back

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:13 PM on May 22, 2008

indy4.jpg

Last night I was lucky enough to attend the Australian premiere of Indy 4. Despite my anxiety, misgivings and fear that it would be disastrous, I actually really enjoyed the film. Of course, some parts bugged me, but for the most part it was just another fun movie starring one of my favourite movie heroes.

I write about technology for a living, so I'm not going to review the film and insult movie critics, movie lovers and everyone involved in the movie industry, but I do have a few thoughts I really want to write down. If you don't want to read anything before you see the film yourself, probably best not to read this post. It doesn't contain any major plot spoilers, just some moments in the film that I really enjoyed or hated.

Philips Shows Off 3D TV

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 1:43 PM on May 22, 2008

Philips-3D-vod-13900.jpg

Samsung were showing off their new 3D plasma at the launch of their Series 6 TVs the other week, but you had to wear glasses that reminded me a bit too much of the Oakley Thumps to be really enjoyable.

According to an AP report in the SMH yesterday, Philips have also been showing off their 3D TVs, except these models don't actually require any sort of eyewear. The TV works a bit like a "holographic greeting card, [combining] slightly different angles of the same image to create video that appears to have different depths as your eyes scan it."

From the report, it's still a bit touch and go - sometimes it's extremely vivid, other times it's just murky. But Philips believe that we'll have 3D TVs in our homes within a few years. Or at least those of us that can afford it.

3 Sticks It To Mobile Broadband

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:51 AM on May 22, 2008

Internet Key Side.jpg

I've been playing around with the MacBook Air for the past couple of weeks (Verdict: the more I use it, the more I need it) and one of the main problems I've found isn't so much a fault with the Air, but a lack of mobile broadband solutions.

Sure, each of the networks has a USB modem for wireless broadband, but most of them are hideous dongle things that just don't suit the Air's pleasing, minimalist design. Not to mention that they aren't exactly convenient for me working on the train on my way into the office.

So that's probably why I like the look of 3's new USB "Internet Key" for mobile broadband. It plugs straight into a USB slot and away you go.

Inside Video of Operation "Blow Up a Satellite": Heart Pounding Action...With Missiles!

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:30 AM on May 22, 2008

Remember how the Navy fired a missile at that spy satellite a few months ago and made it go boom in one shot? Not surprisingly, they were quite proud of their accomplishment—which is why they have compiled footage of their exploits in a series of tense behind-the-scenes moments. The video after the break even shows the missile leaving the ship on its way to a victorious rendezvous with the pesky satellite. It is a definite must-see for any fan of explosions and the work that goes into making those explosions happen.

Lacoste Asks: How Will We Play Tennis In 2083?

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:10 AM on May 22, 2008

How will we play tennis in 2083? From the looks of things, Lacoste believes we will be in a virtual room with collapsible rackets and cool looking robotic suits. Although, I have to admit that the video after the break portrays it as more like a futuristic version of racquetball to me—but either way, it is a sport I could definitely get into.

Rumour: 3G iPhone Launching In June On Optus

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:06 AM on May 22, 2008

iphone optus.png

The guys from Current.com.au obviously got more out of CeBIT than I did - apparently somebody on the Optus stand told them that the 3G iPhone would be launching in June.

Not only that, but apparently it will cost around about the $700 mark.

Considering that officially, both Optus and Vodafone have been keeping very quiet on the whole iPhone front (probably from fear of evil Steve Jobs), this should be classed as rumour, but it does correlate with what our US brethren said yesterday about a worldwide June launch.

Who else can't wait for WWDC just so we can know all the facts?

CIA Airlines: Inflatable Getaway Plane Delivered Upon Request

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 10:50 AM on May 22, 2008

You find yourself held under "house arrest" in a remote jungle region of Indonesia, sometime in the late 1950s. You may have your suit, fedora and at least one halfway decent tie, but the chances of getting back to the US of A seem slim. The CIA thinks you're not so dispensable, so spytechs—with the help of the always patriotic Goodyear Company—build an inflatable aeroplane that they can drop into a jungle clearing. Here's what it looks like when fully inflated and ready for takeoff:

The "Great Swallow" Project: How One Insane Person Gained Notoriety

Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:30 AM on May 22, 2008

I don't know what you thought "the great swallow project" was (actually I do), but I can tell you what it's not. It is definitely not the act of a sane, rational person. For some reason or another, artist Benjamin Verdonck built a nest hanging high on the Rotterdam Weena Tower in the Netherlands. Apparently he has been sitting in the nest for a few days now, acting like a bird and gazing longingly at pedestrians and the giant egg he placed in the street. If you can't actually make it to see this installation in person, you can still get a feel for the weirdness in the video after the break.

Telstra Giving Away Free Laptops (Kinda)

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 10:29 AM on May 22, 2008

telstra free laptop.jpg

Something about this feels... weird. I mean, it's a really good idea - if you have an ABN (that is, you're a business owner), you can get a laptop (valued at up to $700) for $0 up front. All you need to do is pay $99 per month over a 36 month contract, and you get a Turbo 3 Series USB wireless broadband modem with 1GB of data every month plus the laptop. I mean, that sounds good, right? But it's from Telstra? Where's the catch? As I said, this feels weird.

Well, there is no "catch" as such - Telstra are pretty open about the whole thing. The value of the free laptop is $700, which does restrict choice, but if you want a better specced model you can pay the difference. It's also a 36 month contract, with a minimum cost of $3,564 plus excess usage charges. I guess with just 1GB included, the whole excess data cost of 30c/MB could be considered a bit steep, but it is Telstra, and their mobile data charges are fairly well known for being expensive.

The arrangement is done exclusively through selected dealers including Harvey Norman, ICT Distribution and Techhead Interactive, and the deal ends on June 30.

It's a really good idea, and hopefully we'll see some other networks follow the big T's lead on this one. We've all been signing up for subsidised phones on 24 month contracts for years, so hopefully it will work for laptops as well.

Blockbuster's Box Is Hot Competition for Netflix

Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:10 AM on May 22, 2008

Can Blockbuster compete with the new Netflix Player? Their first attempt at a box of their own (seen here) looks like it might fall a little short when it comes to streaming movies and TV shows on demand. But it absolutely dominates the competition in the areas of fast food pizza delivery. Different strokes, I guess. [Silicon Alley Insider]

TiVo Launching Without Subscription?

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:59 AM on May 22, 2008

We all know that TiVo is coming soon, but if the rumblings coming out of the SMH are true, then we'll be getting it without the usual subscription fee that TiVo charges.

I don't know about you, but the whole Australian launch of TiVo just got mighty exciting.

The last we heard, they were planning on cutting the subscription fee right down. But by making it a premium box without ongoing fees, the TiVo will stand out against PVRs from other manufacturers thanks to its proven EPG data and internet capabilities.

Apparently we're looking at a July launch for teh TiVo box, which looks like a month later than Foxtel's new iQ2. The SMH reckons that the move to a subscription-free TiVo will push Foxtel into dropping their price, but I'll believe that when I see it.

On a side note, both Channels 9 and 10 have confirmed that they will share their EPG data on the TiVo, which is a nice touch from Channel 9 considering their ongoing litigation against IceTV.

The other interesting thing is that all the extra features that TiVo offers - like online entertainment, for example, won't be available at launch. Instead they're focusing on the EPG and getting it launched for the Olympics.

In any case, this is awesome news for PVR enthusiasts in Australia. I'm actually excited by this now. How about you guys?

Suck At Mario Kart? Build a Training Wheel in a Few Easy Steps

Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:50 AM on May 22, 2008

At first glance I thought that this homemade wheel mount was absolutely ridiculous—and with good reason. However, the fact that I recently played Mario Kart with my novice girlfriend leads me to believe that their could be a place for a mount like this. Using only a couple of 36-inch bungie cords and a plastic crate you can build what is essentially a traning wheel for the game that helps beginners settle down with the wiimote and master the basic steering movements. Just don't let any of your gamer friends catch you using it. A video of the steering wheel mount "in action" is available after the break.

Bestlink Alpha 400, The US$250 "Eee"

Posted by Mark Wilson at 9:30 AM on May 22, 2008

We're a little sick of the Asus Eee metric too, but it sure makes for a succinct headline. The Bestlink Alpha 400 is a 7-inch Linux PC with a 400Mhz processor, scant 128MB of RAM and 1-2GB of internal flash storage. It's nothing impressive, but it only runs US$250...through probably not much else, if you know what I mean. But order 100 or more and the price drops to US$180 per unit. Pretty neat, since US$18,000 could easily buy you just one computer in more advanced configurations. [Desktop Linux]

Canon Digital Rebel XS/1000D Entry-Level DSLR Specs (Like an XTi + Live View)

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 8:52 AM on May 22, 2008

More supposed info on the supra-entry level Rebel XS (1000D) DSLR Canon's rumoured to be cooking up as a replacement for the XTi: The specs are just like the XTi, but with Live View tacked on. A 10.1MP Digic III sensor, 7-point AF, 3FPS bursts, 2.5-inch LCD (what, no screen love?), XSi-esque menus and Live View. And of course a "cheap price." We're thinking it'll go toe-to-toe with Sony's a300 on price (less than US$700 for the kit), if not a bit lower, since the specs and positioning are comparable—XSi to a350, XS to a300 and D60. If this thing is real, expect more at Photokina in a few months. [Kamerabild via Photography Bay]
