The Most Ghetto Car Stereo Ever Makes Duct Taped Windows Seem Classy
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:30 AM on April 18, 2008
We've no idea how old this image is—it's probably been floating around the internet for a while—but unless we see any other possible entries, we're going to award this the Most Ghetto Car Stereo Ever trophy. If you've got an old beater from the 1970s or '80s, you can actually make your own! I know! It's seriously making a statement to potential stereo thieves. A statement that says, "really, your self-esteem is low enough that you'll steal THIS? How about I just give you five bucks and we call it even?" [My Confined Space via Gearfuse via Tech Digest]

The sponge is really what makes the mod, though. I mean, not only is his blazingly fast CD snugly fit into the dash, but it's also protected against shock *and* moisture!
Brilliant!

High classing it with 52x speeds!
Back in college I was too poor to buy a cd player for up at school, but I happened to have a spare PSU and CD-Rom Drive. Kinda felt like an 8-Track though with the three buttons.

I guess an iPod mini-jacked instead of a powered CD-ROM is just illogical to this person...

The difference is that using duct tape to fix a window is completely obvious and not very effective. What this person has done is clever, inexpensive (probably free) and, though simplistic, totally functional. The two are not even in the same league.

Not as ghetto as a former coworker of mine. He had a full mini-tower in the back of his SUV that he used as an mp3 player.

Nintenboy01

That's actually a very common solution here in the Philippines. Jeepney drivers often use basic PC CD-ROM drives to play music. Some jeepneys even use PC cooling fans up front for the driver and passengers.

Either an 87 - 92 Jetta, an 86 - 92 Golf, or a Corrado. I don't know if that dash was used in the Passat

I've done this. I built it into a padded case, and using the 12+ voltage, it works. I had it running to a cassette adaptor, not directly mounted.
The things are dirt cheap $1-$5 used at a computer store, no need to read data.
The fancy version is to get a CD drive with a remote control.
My current one is a bit fancier, I spent $10 for a newer cassette deck that thinks my iPod is a CD changer. No wires hanging out the dash, and being a factory cassette deck, anti-theftish.
Looks like a Mk2 Jetta without A/C and with a foglight switch from the junkyard for the CD power. 1988-92, german made.
No seat belt warning light, so maybe Canadian. Automatic, perhaps, since there's no tach. Quite the base model.
I'm still driving my 1990 model. Hence my encyclopedic knowledge of obscure VW dash trivia :)

The jeepneys here in the philippines use the same kind of cd-rom as pictured above. they're not very reliable though 'cause they tend to skip tracks when there are humps on the road.

I used to have a 78' Ford T-bird with an 8-track. I used an 8-track to cassette adapter, then used a cassette to cd-player adapter to get my music. Sad :(

He could at least have put some effort into it and located a black faceplate and use a darker shade sponge. This is a slap in the face to modders everywhere......

Maybe you should also explain what a "jeepney". People who have never been to the Philippines or seen a picture of one would definitely not know about is.

oh and about the skippng to the next song problem. Most CD players you just need to press the play button again to skip to the next song.

taxis here in egypt have these jerry-rigged decks more often than real car cd players. Of course nowadays, what with music being considered haram by half the people here, they mostly just use 'em to play Quran...

I hate to admit it, but I've done worse myself. I've got a 13-year old Honda that has never had any audio components in it, ever... no speakers, no wiring, no antenna, nothing. So I bought an inexpensive set of 2.1 computer speakers and a car AC converter, adhered the speakers to the dash and stowed the subwoofer behind the driver's seat, plugged in my mp3 player and voila! Instant white-trash stereo. And it almost manages to drown out the sound of the AC converter!

I see the ghetto charm in this mod. It goes right up there with air conditioner units in the passenger window. It's not that it's ugly. It's that it's ugly and it works. It might not impress the ladies, but it beats that old 8-track any day of the week. And while yes if I it were up to me I'd work on making it a little less grotesque.

And to think this is better than my first car cd-player.. it would randomly eject cd's in the middle of a song; occasionally play damaged disks that were scratched to hell, but not play good disks; you could insert your favorite non-lesbian rock album and it would play Melissa Etheridge...
That cd-player was pure evil... I would rather have this safer "ghetto" version that probably works and won't keep asking for the soul of my firstborn while I'm trying to listen to Jim Croce.
