Stream Music and Video to Your Xbox 360 From Your Mac Slightly Better With Rivet
Posted by Jason Chen at 9:45 AM on April 23, 2008
Connect 360's been out for a good long while, allowing you to stream music, movies and photos from your Mac to your Xbox 360. Why would you go with Rivet, an app that does just about the same thing but only costs $1 less? Mostly for its folder organisation, which allows you to browse your files as it exists on your Mac, instead of in one gigantic list you need to scroll through. Other than this, there's not a whole lot of huge difference between the two programs, but sometimes $1 is the difference between not having some Pocky and having some Pocky. [Cynical Peak]

There should be a poll made. Who has a Mac AND a 360?

@Terc:
Yes, sorry about the know/now mixup. Usually I'm closer to the grammar-nazi side of the spectrum.
I guess now I know not to say "no" to double-checking. ...too cheesy?

I don't know about using "know" interchangeably with "no" but I also have a Mac and a 360. My Apple TV works as a better video player though, that incredibly loud fan in the 360 is always a little annoying to deal with when watching DVDs that I haven't had the time to rip/encode yet.

I have a mac and a 360. Is that really so uncommon? Fragging knows know platform.
And I might keep using Connect360. It may be officially $1 more, but not with the serialbox discount.
Just sayin'

Rivet looks cool, and is $1 cheaper, but I've already paid for Connect360. I think I'll probably just stick with what I have.

Oh damn:
Auto media updating - Add, delete, or move your media all you want. The changes will automatically appear on your Xbox 360.
That is soooooooo nice, as Connect360 does not have that function.
And this is great as well:
Organize your media - Every movie or photo folder that you share is exactly replicated on your Xbox 360. Organize them into subfolders by TV show, genre, or whatever you want. The entire folder structure will be there. No more scrolling through a huge, flat list.
I wish that the demo wasn't so gimped ... 1 video and 10 songs shared, but unlimited photo? Ugh. I want to buy this really bad ... hmmm.

I have a Macbook Pro and a 360. I'm a Connect360 user as well. My biggest gripe about Connect360 is that you can choose where your videos are ... but not your music. I suspect that's because it reads your iTunes Music Library XML file for some reason? Updating plays maybe?
Connect360's worked great for me so far, but I'm intrigued about this Rivet ... as I fucking HATE the one huge folder view for all my movies when I'm browsing on my 360.

i have a mac and a 360. i use the apple tv more these days what with the 360 not doing surround sound on streamed media. the apple tv file organization is a super nice plus when you have a lot of music and video. still, if they have a trial i'll give rivet a shot.

I have a 360 and a Mac. I bought Connect360 a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did. Connect360 lets me use my iTunes playlists and album organization that I've spent hours working on, as opposed to having to run things through Windows Media Player on my PC.

Raising my hand as a 360 and Mac owner. The 360 is great (Call of Duty 4, anyone?) -- and you know that means something because I loathe Microsoft.

I switched to Mac in 2004. I got my first Xbox 360 prior to launch (I won it) and I've been using Connect360 since it first came onto the scene.
In my mind, the Xbox 360 / Mac combo is perfect. If I want to play games, the 360 is ready and requires no driver updates or installation. If I need to work, surf the web, or manage data, I have a Mac. If I need to run Windows programs (like using Windows IE to play movies from Netflix) I have Parallels.
And they're all connected to my 24" monitor. I can switch between 360/Mac at will, and I can even use the PIP to multitask. Need to use the Oblivion Wiki while playing? No problem!
I don't have any problem with Microsoft. I like their mice (the standard wireless mouse is the best mouse in that price range, but not better than my bluetooth Mighty Mouse) and Windows gets the job done, even if it sucks most of the time.
I just dislike the way the handle some things. I hate Windows Genuine Advantage. I hate having limited activations on a piece of $100 software that I legitimately own, just because I reinstall or change a hard drive or something. I hate dealing with the MS call center in India, and their scripted, condescending bullshit. I really dislike Balmer, but I have nothing but respect for Bill Gates.
I Love the Xbox 360, but I hate that MS made certain parts totally proprietary. Hard drive, WiFi adapter, and wireless controllers HAVE TO be purchased from MS, because they won't let anyone else manufacture these parts and they made them so you can't just buy industry standard parts that would cost 1/4 the price.
Say what you will about Apple being proprietary, but at least I can use any SATA hard drive, almost any USB device, and any human interface device with my Mac. Not so with the 360. It kinda makes me glad MS *doesn't* make computers!
I had Apple TV, and I decided to just use the 360 instead. Apple TV is nice, but I never purchase or rent from iTunes these days, anyway.
If Netflix comes through with a 360 rental plan, I'm all over it.

+1 for the Mac/360 owners.
I cannot really see why that would be uncommon, considering video cards for Macs are absurdly over-priced and lagging behind their PC counterparts. On top of that, AAA (or any, really) game titles released for OS X are few and far between.
A 360 is cheaper than a decent Mac video card, plus you get all the streaming and gaming goodness you can handle.

Connecting a Mac to Microsoft's hardware is sad.
I have an external hard drive (containing my media) connected to my Mac with firewire and also connected to my PlayStation3 with USB. No extra software is required, however, the hard drive requires a FAT32 format for it to be recognised by the PS3. The only downside is that you cannot access the hard drive from both machines at the same time.
I manage the data using my mac, then eject the disc and then I can access the data using my PS3 with the convenience of it all being sent directly from a hard drive.
I use the external hard drive as a backup for my Mac, so I have copies of my media files there anyway.
This is much better than streaming data from one machine to the other - only one machine needs to be turned on which will save on energy costs, plus it is much quicker and makes use of the backed up data which would normally just take up space on the hard drive and would only be used in case of emergencies.
This is one of the many reasons why the PS3 is better than a 360.... Microsoft Sucks

+1 for 360/Mac User
Granted I used to be a Mac Genius, but I love my 360. The one product M$ didn't mess up. And since it does such a fantastic job of streaming all my media, why get an TV? I just can't justify it.
@lordofthetoast
The 360 does support surround sound via streaming. My Bose Lifestyle tells me I'm getting a solid Dolby Digital 5.1 surround when streaming certain dvd rips (thanks torrents) and a lot of songs in my iTunes library.
BTW for those torrentheads (which I'm assuming a lot of you are) check out a program for mac called TVShows. Its helped streamline my d/l experience. My old school Powermac G3 now has reason to live. Auto d/l the tvshows I want and serve them up to the 360. Like have a Tivo. =) God bless these series of tubes, and screw comcast for not offering better services for cheaper prices. =)

@tmadel: There's an application called EyeConnect that streams media over an ethernet connection from a Mac to a PS3, but it's not very good (very slow last time I used it).
I recommend using an external hard drive as stated in my earlier comment.

Many Macs, and a 360. I use Connect 360, but if the folder features of Rivet are a big deal. I'll wait a bit to see if Nullriver adds the functionality soon, but if they don't I'll suck it up and buy Rivet. It's still cheaper than an AppleTV or similar.

I've been using Connect 360 for a year or so now. Probably my biggest complaint with it has been the lack of folders. if you have 50 videos or so on there it can be a bitch trying to find the one you're looking for in that long list. I don't do a whole lot of streaming from my mac to my tv anymore for some reason. But I used it alot when I first got it. If they are truly the same other than that one feature I'd say go with rivet.
As for people having both a mac and a 360. I know tons of people with macs and 360's. Why wouldn't they since there are so few games for Mac, it seems like the best option would be to get a 360.
