Straight from AT&T Mobility CEO's Mouth: 3G iPhone "in Months," $299 Vu and Sprint Sucks
We're at an AT&T lunch, and AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega just dropped two meaty bits. First, he said that "I think that you're going to see all our integrated devices be 3G devices.. in the next couple months." Sascha Segan from PC Mag asked if that included the iPhone. De la Vega responded that he would like to repeat himself. Cue fanboy 3G fever!
AU: So maybe the rumours I've been hearing about a NextG iPhone within the next 2 months are true... I hope Telstra restructures their data pricing if they do launch the iPhone.
Also, even though they played coy for whatever reason with the original announcement, AT&T Mobility's CEO just revealed that the LG Vu is going to run US$299—same as the Instinct.
Speaking of Sprint, when asked why they only revealed a new all-you-can-eat subscription after Verizon did—and not Sprint—he replied that Verizon is a high quality player, number 2 in the marketplace, and they didn't want to give them any edge. Translation? Sprint is a non-player to AT&T. What about WiMax? Ralph is "not too worried about the threat from WiMax."

if they launch the iphone Telstra will restructure their pricing plan, to make it more expensive.
Im on nextg now with the nokia 6120c and it would be cool to get some more choice
Just in time for those juicy tax rebates! I'll take two, please...

Seems like a June announcement for a 3G iphone would be about right since the first google-android phones are supposed to appear by the end of summer. Lock in a couple more customers before the competition starts arriving.
bobbby
[img292.imageshack.us] any ideas guys?
DaKidJordan
Get ready for the world to stop turning as millions of fanboys simultaneously start back peddling over their stance on 3G.
You know - the ones that have been telling anyone who will listen that 'nobody needs 3G' as apparently 'EDGE is just as fast' and my personal favourite, 'the world has free WiFi everywhere'.
Cheba
@CGrant: Lol, yeah, but I didn't wanna bite off the other dudes admittedly cool BOOM!
bigMoneyMIKE
@GhostofCharlesBronson: And let me guess, they never owned up to their mistake did they? They have this arrogance about them that I just don't get. They have major customer service problems at every level: sales, customer care, managers, etc. Anytime there's a problem, it's *your* fault and they can't be bothered trying to accept responsibility. The people are leaving sprint in mass numbers, and there are definite reasons why.
Gofastmazda
@cbg2113: Indeed! As a gesture of eternal protest I will never replace my Macintosh Se. I, too, resent Apple's progress.
Carlos Rodriguez
@Gofastmazda: Your right. Sprint service has cost them a contract with us. It took them over 7 days to port a phone number from AT&T to Sprint correctly. 7 days for the director of technology to go without his mobile number. In-fucking-credible.
GhostofCharlesBronson
just like apple to throw out a new sku and leave everyone else who put the money in to the launch behind. dicks
cbg2113
Who cares. They are going to ream everyone with huge costs for it all anyways. I'm just gonna laugh at my friends who waste money on all the latest crap and then have to keep upgrading it every year.
tricky69
its been covered to death for months, so what are you going to believe?
deliciousburglar
i'm floored at the number of "damn it! i just bought one" comments. this one's been covered to death, why are you folks surprised?
Paradise
@Stacky Botrus: Are you really willing to use that last feature on-the-go?
Kaiser-Machead
@Chris: Not exactly a product announcement, so no, apple has no 'out' clause (not like they'd want to, they have sold more iPhones with AT&T than they would have with any other carrier).
Gofastmazda
@Khamel: AT&T doesn't charge more for 3G plans. They charge more for full-browser phones (i.e. Blackberry, Palm, Blackjack), those are $30 a month. Phones without full browsers pay $15 a month.
Gofastmazda
That suminabich better have more than just 3G in its ass. Give it the now standard GPS, and stereo BT support, and sync over Wifi and a toilet.
Stacky Botrus
For the love of God, let this be magically contained within a firmware update...
mcdonnr
YES, this is exactly why i waited..
Months?! Horay!
silverfox840
It just makes no sense.. Why would they release an SDK and an second iPhone on the same months? Like update 2.0 with SDK and an iPhone 2??? It just sounds weird....I'm not getting my hopes up.....And i'm only 13 and i have had my iPhone since june...But 3G would be nice...
stempinski88
Maybe around June 9th? Developers Conference?
thebear91
I am feeling kinda glad that I held off from buying an iphone. It would be great to get the 3g version when it finally surfaces.
The one thing that still really irks me is the fact that you MUST sign a 2-year agreement with AT&T when you purchase an iphone. I always prefer buying the phone full price to avoid being indebted to a phone service provider for so long.
Kilcannon
it hope they also release a cdma version.. that would be super
WolfDV
i can has 3G in Europe plz?
Sleeper_Service
Jobs will probably announce in a few days that they are releasing 3G in June. That's probably why the supply of iPhone in the channel is next to none.
Noobs-R-Us
oh yummy.
my contract is up in july with sprint. and after trying out my girlfriend's iPhone, the lack of 3G was my only major complaint. besides the wimpy speakerphone, but i can live with it.
the only question now is will this cost extra? and will AT&T give me decent service?
rimplestultskin
@Wess: i can't sell it until stevie says, Boom 3G, cause i'll be without a phone, but as soon as 3g is release my will be jailbroken and unlock & sold & i will say hello to the new model
snitch29
@voltron80: What does that have anything to do with the future releases from AT&T. That's like saying nothing "new and improved" will come out because something else sorta like it as already out didn't get those new features. For people who care about 3G, They will wait, just like some people waited for a 3G iPhone. For those that don't will get whatever is out there now..
Seanross
@snitch29: Should have of sold it for 500 euros. Good luck on the sale!
Wess
Not to question de le Vega or the Giz crew but this is all kind of vague. I love being an optimist as much as the next guy but saying "I expect" or "I think" doesn't really make things clear enough, if at all. And throwing "months" into the mix doesn't make it any less ambiguous (note de la Vega didn't reference the iPhone specifically when adding a quantifier to the duration). Don't get me wrong, I'm waiting with bated breath and am probably just reading waaaay too much into this but my Verizon contract ends in late June and daddy needs a new baby to replace his weaksauce Razor.
kodo
@bigMoneyMIKE
Dumbass you mean BOOM!
Nongeek
@shpanky: That's somewhat ignorant, nobody but Steve controls Apple.
Face-Nose(spite)=Steve Jobs
bourgeoisie
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: But that's the beauty of Apple's business model, those taxes never go away, duh!?
bpapa9013
aaaand that's why I didn't buy an iPhone yet.
But I doubt we'll actually have a 3G iPhone in few months. But I do hope to have one in a couple of years... after the nerd and fanboy taxes goes down.
Bokusatsu_Tenshi
Honestly, it doesn't matter how pissed Mr. Jobs is about this exec's comments. If Stevie boy wants to play in ATT's sandbox, he has to play by their rules..speaking as someone who used to develop apps for ATT. The carriers control all...
shpanky
NOOOOOOOOO.
EDGE speed went to utter crap after the iPhone launched. For the moment, 3G is still unpolluted by 8 million dorks checking facebook every 3 minutes.
asten77
Glad I waited I am.
Kaiser-Machead
I hope Apple has a clause in their AT&T contract that prevents AT&T from ruining Steve's product announcements. Maybe then Apple has a reason to escape from AT&T exclusivity.
Chris
@gamecrazychris: At least with AT&T the texts actually get through! I have friends on Sprint who STILL can't send me text or pictures of any kind, they just never show up. Or if they do... it's 3 days later.
jnriga
GPS?! Who needs it with the current solution using wifi and cell triangulation.
I'm most interested in 3G, and 802.11N! My iphone is the only thing on my network that is running G and slowing everything else down.
jnriga
@BrandonOBrien: Yes they can. When you file for a grant with the FCC you can request confidentiality for a period of time. So it is not certian that it will be published to the FCC site before the announcement.
FuzzysFriedChicken
Just watching the news and they said that iPhone stocks are either low or even out of stock in many of the Apple stores. Looking like they could release the 3G at the end of this month or next month. They called 20 east coast stores if you were wondering.
Teutates74
@drewbyh: and now I'm nauseous.
Step666
@snitch29: You mean "$500". Believe it when you see it.
James
when is at&t going to stop gouging for 3g plans, thats the real news. i only hope the new 3g iphone leads to 3g data plans not costing $30-$60. im on the $20 mediamax with 200 text messages and thats about all i want to pay. i dont want to pay more for my phone's net usage than i do for home.
Khamel
whatever. i'm waiting for v2.0
it will have whatever it has, and i will finally buy my iPhone.
tucker
My 8GB model already has a buyer from a 3rd world country who is giving me $500 for it unlocked so am just waiting on stevie to say Boom again
snitch29
boom.it's so funny how apple treats its new products(like they're the philosopher's stone or something)
Manve
John Mayer here.
Just wanted to say hi.
MrBlahBlah
@Joseph: can you tell me which gadget never has any spec-increases over time? or doesn't give you more for less over time? i was unaware it was an apple specific practice.
x23
k, so, yeah. when the price drops a few months after the initial release... i'ma have to get one of those. EDGE data was my biggest gripe with the iPhone.
s0crates82
*fap fap fap*
Jimbuck
@dimadelux: its called apple nerd tax. Everyone pays no matter when you buy--Don't worry you'll get used to it.
Joseph
Having owned an iPhone for several months, I'm actually not too worried about 3G. I'm more excited to see what other changes might be made.
GPS
Please.
itchytooth
Hmm
P3nnst8r
@P3nnst8r: Dammit, i hope this works this time. And doesnt brick something.
P3nnst8r
"I think that you're going to see all our integrated devices be 3G devices.. in the next couple months."
What exactly does 'integrated devices' refer to? As far as i've heard, I don't think there's any ATT software running on the iphone... or am I just a complete tool....
nyoung79
What's an iPhone?
N@tedog
The one thing that drives me crazy is that none of their iphone plans including the $130 "unlimited" plan include unlimited text messages, they still expect you to pay another $20 for unlimited texts. I wouldn't mind $10, thats the only thing I miss about Sprint.
gamecrazychris
@Samifumi:
P3nnst8r
@bpatten: If it's 3G, I will!
frigg
@bpatten: I'll buy your iPhone.
tme2nsb
@voltron80: how so are "balackberrys" as u like to call RIM devices that aren't 3g going to effect this. Come on just look at the many anticipated 3g handsets coming out for AT&T. Right now its kind of hard to completely deny that any 3g phones will arrive. But hey atleast its not like its T-Mobile, they have yet to unveil any 3G devices.
CGrant
I wouldn't say "Straight from ATT's mouth". He didn't literally say "we will have a 3G iPhone in the next couple months".
James
Anybody want to buy an iPhone? Seriously, it's only like 3 weeks old. I'll even throw in a case.
bpatten
And how many times has the Steve Himself said "We're working on a 3g iPhone."
workingonyourinvoice
son of a bitch, i just got an refurbed iphone, oh well
graffiksguru
He's right, Sprint *is* a non player. Ask any business owner who has seen their nextel service diminish to crap over the past year, or the nearly million+ subscribers who have fled the flustercuk that is currently sprint nextel, and you'll see sprint is, indeed, a non-factor in the wireless world.
Throw in their mounting debt, their quarterly reduction of credit status, and you have a carrier in deep, deep trouble.
And is a 3G iphone announcement really that surprising? It's not like he let the cat out of the bag, and he surely didn't give anything resembling a timeframe for it's release.
Gofastmazda
We'll have to see it come through the FCC first. It's not like they can hide that.
BrandonOBrien
@bigMoneyMIKE: i think u meant to say "Boom" like Samifumi's Steve Job reference.
CGrant
and i just bought one :(
why couldn't i wait
dimadelux
@bmoctta: dude Beckham has a gold iPod Touch, not a gold iPhone
CGrant
I bet Steve is pissed he just let that one out.. not that it wasn't already obvious.
Blinklink11
I'm wet.
drewbyh
That seems like BS, since they just added new balackberrys that aren't 3G.
voltron80
BAM!
bigMoneyMIKE
Ha. Beckham is stuck with only a 2.5G in gold.
bmoctta
Boom.
Samifumi
