Starbucks' First AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspot Pops Up In San Antonio
Starbucks' great Wi-Fi transition begins as a Starbucks in San Antonio is the first to recieve an AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot. Looks like Starbucks is giving the old T-Mobile ball and chain the boot in favour of its new AT&T mistress. Screenshot below. [3Screens]

Hmm, here in Phoenix we have several Starbucks with AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots already. There are three Starbucks down the road (same shopping center, I love it) - one stand-alone, one inside a Barnes & Noble across the parking lot, and one inside the Super Target down the line. I know the Barnes & Noble and stand-alone ones are AT&T Wi-Fi, I was at those this weekend and made the mental note of it. Haven't been to that Target in a while so I can't speak to that one, but the Barnes & Noble has been AT&T Wi-Fi for at least a month.

@Leonard Nimrod: Not yet, but it's coming. Currently working out who to open it up in some way that if you are an AT&T Wireless subscriber (iPhone, maybe another wi-fi enabled device) you can access the hotspot while in the store. Won't work with other wireless devices, as in, you can't bring your laptop in and hook up for free. Only on an AT&T Wireless device. Who knows, they might even just lock that down to the iPhone only.
Of course, when the 3G iPhone comes out that will probably be faster than the in-Starbucks wi-fi anyway.

So, does this mean my iPhone will get free WiFI.
If not, it would behoove AT&T to do so as it takes away some data congestion on the expensive cell network and dumps it onto a cheaper and faster WiFi network. I

Two weeks ago I noticed it at a Starbucks here in LA (Culver City area). No idea how long its been that way though since that was the first time I'd been to Starbucks in a long time let alone tried to jump onto their wireless. The only difference was that the big banner was T-Mobile and the small banner was AT&T. The SSID was still tmobile. I thought that since I have an iPhone w/ AT&T I might be able to jump on through the AT&T option but my login info didn't work. Went ahead and called AT&T while I was there through a provided number on the page and they told me that I access to it was not included. They were very nice though and said to keep checking cuz they are always changing or something like that.

What's cool is if you have AT&T as your DSL (or FTTN) provider, you get free access to any of their wifi hotspots.

how about free instead, since every other cafe without Stabucks' profits can seem to afford it?

@wdworld17nb: Yeah, I saw the picture and was thinking the same thing. You just beat me to it (that's what I get for going to Austin).

That Starbucks is about 4 blocks from ATT Headquarters. No big surprise it would be one of the fist to switch over.

Hmm...a good directional antenna pointed down the hill and my parents could probably log in. Sounds like a fun weekend project to me.
