Star Wars Action Figures Stoke the Steampunk Fire
Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:30 AM on April 12, 2008
You would think that steampunk would have gotten old by now, but when masterful artists like Sillof work their magic on products like Star Wars or Iron Man figures, we just can't help but get swept up in all the nerdiness. Peruse the gallery to see what I mean. [Sillof's Workshop via Slashfilm]

@One2ManyCords: George Lucas got the inspiration for Vader an the Storm Troopers FROM the Nazi's (at least the way they look). And by the way this is one of THE most bad ass Steam Punk action figure sets i have ever seen!

I thought starwars was already kind of steampunk to begin with.

That's imaginative alright.
3-PO isn't looking too happy, but when has it ever?

Vader looks "off"...but the storm trooper is simply amazing. The detail is WOW.

@SirNirian: The Troopers yes, but Vader was distinctly Japanese samurai.

Very pretty. Here is some nerdism: These actually look a lot like Ralph McQuarrie's concept paintings for the original Star Wars in the mid-1970s. [homepage.mac.com]

@One2ManyCords
So you've never noticed that the Empire as envisioned originally in the Star Wars movies was based on WWII Nazi Germany?

What kills Vader for me is the face. The detail is fantastic, but without the trademark triangular vent over the mouth, it's just not him.

Why isn't Hollywood catering to the steampunk crowd? The league of extroardinary homeboys doesn't cut it.

I actually like the radically redesigned Vader, it's the armored-to-the-teeth Obi Wan I don't dig.
The best part though, hands down, is the R2 with the smokestack.

Yeah....I definitely want to see a SteamPunk Star Wars movie now! These look great.
It's really just the 'slightly different than reality' aspect of SP that I enjoy. As well as the ornateness of design. I don't know how else to explain the appeal.

I shudder to think this steampunk movement will evolve into a tendency to have all our gear embossed with curvy lines and dubious artwork.Give Aliens-industrial any day.

@ParJoe: I wonder what a SteamPunk Death Star might look like? Or Star Destroyers?

ParJoe

@tamoko: Yeah! I have no idea what you could do with the Death Star. I imagine a Star Destroyer might look a bit more like an old submarine...or even the Nautalis!

The Abercrombie & Fitch haircuts sort of ruin the overall look for me.
That and the fact that the Stormtrooper looks like he was put together out of Korean tea cups. Just not menacing enough.
But I do love the idea (and double-love their Iron Man.)

Much better hair for Leia than her original ear-phone look. Vader, with those big goggle eyes and frog lips is just not scary.
