Samsung Unveils...Second Life
Since it's April 2nd, we guess this news is legit. Samsung has announced that they've developed a Second Life client for their mobile phones, allowing their users to jack...in anywhere in the world. And while at least a little technically impressive, we're wondering what drove Samsung to support a game that's been noted to have an extremely small user base. While millions have registered, those who actually "play" Second Life are few and far between (only about 250,000 accounts). Samsung, when people said "wow" to your idea, you probably should have double-checked their punctuation. [koreatimes]

Uuuhm, Second Life is free wjousts. :)
You don't need to pay one penny if you don't want to. And you still get to enjoy the world.

@wjousts: I pretty much agree. I get kinda sick of hearing, in just about every tech column, how Second Life is the future now and how it's the testing ground for all the new possibilities technology will bring us.
I tried it, I really did, for a few weeks. It's fun to explore, but essentially, it's 3D chatroom. Building anything takes an enormous amount of effort and learning. And the place is mostly a jungle of huge 'malls' and adult entertainment vendors, which is sad because you have to pay for that and people actually do.

@Mayor McRib: Yeah. But if you had one wouldn't you be working or out doing something in the real world rather than posting comments on Giz?

If I was ever bored enough to play Second Life, I may actually have my cell phone with me. I think Second Life "mobile" is more compelling than the original.
The whole genre of time wasting computer entertainment is more interesting on a mobile platform than while sitting at home. Look how popular mobile email is! :o)

Same goes for many other time wasting computer activities... Look how popular email is. :o)

I, for one, just don't get it. Do people actually want to play games like this on a phone?! So we aim to get BIGGER TV's and BIGGER monitors for our PC's...and then play a game on a tiny phone?
On a side note I went to high school with the guy that started Linden Labs/Second Life...rich bastard! LOL

(Amount of people Who Play Second Life) - (Amount of them who don't have a laptop) - (Amount who'd buy a Samsung over this) = Three.
...sadly, I am one of the Three.

People, don't you know better? Stay away from Second Life! First Life has MUCH better reviews and technical support.

@Fountainhead: Ha. The unnecessary fap fap fap's will never get old to me....
Jimbuck
so you, can escape from life while living it. honestly, this Second Life crap needs to die.
TinyLightning
@TheCyberBob: LOL! They have to go to the bathroom SOME time... =-P

fap fap fap....

@wjousts: Don't do it. I tried it once. If you want a similar experience go into a public school yard give the boys Hussler magazines and punch a little girl square in the face. The chaos that ensues is about on par really.
Also I thought the idea behind second life was to give those people that have no life a life at least in a digital world. Why would they need the client portable if they just live in their parents basement between jobs for the past 10 years.
TheCyberBob
I think its a good idea. Fads can ebb and flow, Second Life could come back to be something bigger, perhaps through the cell phone market. It'd be way better than much of the other cell phone games out there.

@skittlzncombos: What are you talking about, the cute girl IS in the front! ;)

Why put it on a Samsung phone? It has an open source client. There's not as much need for a mouse compared to a game. It's purely community orientated, something which some people might appreciate on a communication device.
I visit SL from time to time as there's a lot of interesting user-created places. It's too bad it's encumbered by a real market. Strip malls do not make for an interesting world. Places like the NASA display are interesting, though, and it's fun to run into live performances by musicians.
PseudoKnight
Well done with the wow joke, Mark!
marcelino_martins
Thank gawd! I was afraid some people might have to be disconnected from SL for a few minutes...
ideaman2020
Don't you need the first life before you can start the second one?
Mayor McRib
WoW on the iPhone. It's gonna happen.
Noobs-R-Us
Yeah, if it was up to me I buy the phone that the really cute girl in the back is holding...
mrxcel
And two people not playing Second Life...? Those girls above. Nuff said.
IKEACAR
Am I the only one sick of hearing about Second Life?
Maybe I should actually try it sometime....

@skittlzncombos:
kudos to the Giz for highlighting the blond anyway.

Gimme some "Enemy Territory:Quake Wars" and we'll talk.

@skittlzncombos: Cause in Second Life the one in the front is the cute one and the one in the back is a puppy.
92BuickLeSabre
And why is the cute girl the one in the back?
skittlzncombos
I for one hope to never see WoW on mobile phones. Last thing I need is even more people ignoring human interaction in public places because of their cell phones. At least this game wouldn't have a big effect.
skittlzncombos
Let's have tiny little sexy times.

This is yet another reason why they kicked moto's butt. Taking chances. How long will it be before they (or some third party) creates the WoW client. Gonna be big.
