Ricoh G600 Is Both Rugged and Fugged
Posted by Addy Dugdale at 8:30 PM on April 22, 2008
Does a water-resistant and dust-proof camera really have to be as fugly as this? Ricoh's ten-megapixel, shock-resistant G600 sits alongside its Caplio 500G, and boasts, as well as a 5x zoom, flash with a ten-metre range, 52MB internal memory and hi-def 2.7-inch display.
The G600 does movies too, shooting VGA video at 30fps, and you can even shoot up to a metre underwater. The G600 has been designed to work between temperatures of -10º and 40º Celsius, and you can drop it onto 26 different surfaces from a height of 1.5 metres. Costing £350 when it comes out next month, that's about $700—which proves that, while the camera may be shockproof, I am not. [Ricoh and Akihabara News]

$700 and all they could manage was three wimpy feet of water resistance?
Put a point-n-shoot in a zip lock bag and you have an underwater camera that A) costs less B) can go deeper and C) still looks better than the G600.

any time you slap a zoom into the equation, it gets a lot more difficult. Thats why most of the pro "ziplocks" have the glass lens port (so you dont get the funky plastic coated look to all your photos) connected to an accordian of sorts to allow for the movement.

Gizmodo, why do you call it "water proof" when even Ricoh's own press release only calls it "water resistant"? Why, Gizmodo, why?!?

The spec for Olympus Stylus 1030 SW camera is more promising - waterproof up to 30 ft and shockproof up to ~7 ft. It costs half as much and looks so much better.
