Pandora Open Source Games System is Retro Gaming God
Posted by Haroon Malik at 1:30 PM on April 13, 2008
The Pandora handheld has serious retro gaming in mind, and with a Linux OS, an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU, WiFi connectivity, dual SDHC card slots, QWERTY keypad, dual joystick controls, D-pad, TV output, USB mass storage mode and a 16.7M colour touchscreen display, it's shaping up as quite a promising platform.
The device looks rather bulky, but will actually be, approximately, the size of a Nintendo DS, which means it is packing an awful lot under a rather small hood. Emulation-wise, the GP2X-esque device will be able to handle all the greats, including NES, SNES, PS, DS and Sega Saturn, all at full speed. My Nintendo DS Lite just started getting an awful redundant feeling, but with an expected price tag of US$330 for the Pandora, I think the DS is safe for now. The developer units will ship in the coming months, with the retail version being readied in time for an undisclosed, summer release date. [Product Page via Retro Thing via Technabob]

I love it, I don't care what the other guys think. All I want to know is if it plays any A/V media

No way this thing sees the light of day. It's specifically made to be emulation machine. The thing'll be sued into the same oblivion that the Phantom exists in.
Even if it does somehow "make it", the layout is horrible. Take your DS out and place your fingers where they have the control pad, buttons, and analog pads placed- right up there by the hinge. Yeah. That'll feel nice and natural to play.
The idea has merit, but they sure have a lot of work to go still if they think it'll sell well.

Don't think it would be emulating DS for long before Nin capped their ass.

@HisBoyElroy1971: Same way you do it on the computer - you display both DS "screens" on the single screen. Not a big deal.

Um... how does it emulate a DS seeing as it only has one screen?

I agree with Tito - With the thousands of ROM sites out there not being closed down, I think it's quite clear that Sega and Nintendo don't care if it's capable of playing games more than a few years old.
I can see them having issue with the DS playability. Although this device doesn't look like it's shaping up bad, I couldn't possibly see many reasons to chose it over say, a PSP.

I want this!! S-NES, NES, Sega Saturn are all legal, if you "have" your own copy, and since they DON'T make anymore profit they could care less. DS emulation seems rather hard even with both screens on one screen. . .

@Guu: It will see the light of day, no doubt about that. The GP2X saw the light of day being an emulation machine, and the GP2X community already guaranteed that will be a niche for such a machine.
Now if it will ever hit the mainstream, that is in serious doubt.

I love the actual English labeling of the front ports.

I would love to buy this thing for half that price. I guess this puts me in the market for the GP2X. I don't think this thing is too illegal, as the machine is simply hardware, and the emulators are software written for it. On my computers, I have emulators, and I have emulators set up on my Wii via the Twilight Princess hack. Neither of those devices are illegal (Although Twilight Princess may break the DMCA, but it's nearly impossible to interpret).
The issue may be grayer if those emulators come installed on the machine, but it has always been my understanding that emulators are legal so long as they don't include copies of copyright roms/bios images in the version that is publically distributed from the developers. However, I guess it could be argued that the device encourages piracy if it did come with the emulators installed, but the manufacturers could argue that the emulators are only for legal homebrew testing.

@--Tito--: Actually, it's a misnomer that you can legally use roms and emulators if you own the games and system. Under both US and Japanese copyright law, the medium in which both game and system occupy is protected under distribution and alteration rights.
As for not caring, I find that doubtful. Nintendo is making a mint in Virtual Console releases on the Wii and SEGA is getting a share of that. The fact that ROM sites are so prolific doesn't mean that game companies don't care, it means that the internet is an impossibly large place and they've learned that even if they shut a site down, five more just pop up. Also, there are countries in the world who don't share the same (or even have at all) copyright laws.
However, Guizzy is also correct. It may well see the light of day- simply as hardware, emulators not included. There's nothing illegal in that.
I do maintain part of my original objection to the unit, however. The layout is just plain wrong. They need to switch the locations of the qwerty keypad and the game controls. As it is, it looks far too uncomfortable to play.

@Guu: Oh, well the qwety keyboard probably is a cushion so your palm holds there, since its gonna be the size of a DS then it wouldn't be an unconfort, but who knows they may redesign it.

"Actually, it's a misnomer that you can legally use roms and emulators if you own the games and system."
Your fair use rights allow you to transfer mediums. ie: rip cds to mp3s. Especially when the original medium is fragile or the device to play it is (ie: NES games)
Again, your RIGHTS allow you to play software you own on any hardware you own.

@Guu: maybe you meant "misconception" rather than "misnomer"
And I agree with you. Very few people download roms or isos as a backup copy of games they own

It looks like someone beat a DS with an ugly stick...
For $330 you'd have to be a total jackass to buy this thing. I'd take an EEE PC over that, tyvm.
