Microsoft's Zune Video X Could Be Xbox Live Marketplace Meets iTunes
Mary Jo Foley over at ZDNet has a pretty interesting rumour on a Zune Marketplace-like service in development code named "Zune Video X". It's supposed to take what Microsoft's learned from their Xbox 360 Live Marketplace endeavor (menus, selling movies, renting movies, organisation, etc) and port it into a Zune ecosystem. The point? "A single hub where Zune users could buy and download music, videos, TV shows and more entertainment content."
If this is true, it'll be interesting to see when Microsoft will roll this out. They've already revamped the Zune UI in the 2nd generation Zunes last Fall, and to redo the entire Marketplace portion of the suite again this year might be too many changes in too short a time. Then again, we'd really like Zune to support video and movie rentals that are tied into Xbox Live's movie rentals. [ZDNet]

Ready set go and we are off and the rest we will say is history as this is the best that stand out from the rest.
So Mary Jo Foley is reporting a rumor that Microsoft has invented the iTunes store? Priceless.

I love my Zune 30 (as I've said MANY times before) and this would be a sweet addition.

@tokiwartooth: A year is an eternity in the tech world. Those stats are meaningless.

As an extremely satisified Zune80 and Xbox360 user, I am definitely looking forward to this type of integration. Hopefully this will prove successful for MS and the Zune, and more companies will begin to design and release more accessories for the Zune itself.

Ah, the figures ~ April, 2007
Sandisk (9.7 percent)
Creative Labs (2.7 percent)
Samsung (2.5 percent)
Microsoft (2.5 percent)

@Sam_Zebian: Is it?

Market share myths and facts: Apple has more than 75% of PMP market, the Zune impacted on other PlaysForSure devices, and didn't really touch the iPod.
This is one of those situations where the Apple haters who say that OSX's "7% share" is small to the point of insignificance.. but then look on Zune's <5% share as if it's some sort of MS driven miracle.

when do these people find time to watch a movie on an mp3 player so often that they will rent one?
and watch it on a freaking such a small screen. can you really see when neo flicks the bird?

I love my Zune but the software really sucks! Just had to be said one more time, sorry to bother you.

@Sleeper_Service: Zune's only but rumor is that the Zune brand will massively getting expanded with support for the marketplace hitting Windows Mobile 7 phones as well.

all they need to do is join XBLVM and Zune Marketplace... hell if u have zunepass u get your 360 as a 24/7 jukebox :) and if you buy a SD you get the Portable version as well... just like if u grab the HD you get the SD now...
it seems to make so much sense i dont understand what their waiting on it has to be legalality etc... cause the technology is definitly already their.
phantam
Looks nice. Just it just work with the Zune or can you use other PMPs?

@Slaughter: According to the stats of my company's web server, OS X now represents 7.24% of traffic. When I first started there, it represented 1.89%. Take from that what you will.
That said, market share is to profit margin as orange is to (wait for it) apple. I dislike fanboys† too, but you're arguing an invalid point.
†Not just Apple fanboys either. Windows, Linux, Amiga…I hate you all equally!

@Substance_D: Just drag and drop into AddOns > Themes ;-)
Drvec
@Drvec: Awesome, thanks :D Doesn't work with my color-changing tabs, though :(
Substance_D
@Drvec: Thanks! How do I install this? .jar? Isn't that the format of a cellphone game?

@Sam_Zebian: NM, after I posted my comment the comments appeared again... weird FF2 glitch...
Sam_Zebian
Is it just my browser or did all of the comments just dissapear???
Sam_Zebian
@Marty_MacFly: You got it sir.
JustEaton
@xxenclavexx: Yes, I must agree. ANyone who agrees with us, feel free to post the following-
Marty_Mcfly is a trolling FAILURE of a fanboy!! And he has an ugly face (apparently)
Sam_Zebian
@Marty_MacFly: your face is a failure, yea I said it.
xxenclavexx
@Marty_MacFly: Yeah, the Zune is a failure. And so was the Iphone... My ass, you dumb Apple worshiper. (look at his pic, it's obvious he's just a trolling Fanboy) Zune is pretty much the #2 PMP on the market right now, just below Ipod, and that's a lot for an MP3 player that's been out since the end of '06.
Sam_Zebian
@Marty_MacFly: I wouldn't say that the Zune's a failure. If you're talking marketshare, even, you could say that Apple's been a pretty big failure in the past (and, perhaps, the present as well).
Reilaos~
@JustEaton:
Macs market share is to Windows market share as..oh wait, Mac has no market share....nevermind.
Slaughter
Jason, what's your firefox theme? Looks nice.
Substance_D
@quikboy: Microsoft is in a difficult position for that. They're still the dominant player in the OS market, and every time they do any kind of integration with anything, they have to be very, very careful, or risk a lot of litigation.
Mio
@JustEaton: So Zune Video X will be a tremendous failure?
Marty_MacFly
Microsoft Zune is to iPod as Zune Video X is to iTunes. 'nough said.
JustEaton
I like the idea of a 360 acting as a Zune hub.
Erwos
I've always wished MS would finally integrate some of their products and services closer together. I too don't understand why it's taking so long.
I can't wait to see what this does.
Where'd you get that theme in the browser? I kinda like it.
quikboy
Glad you mentioned iTunes, as that's what I thought of before I finished reading the headlines. It only makes sense to offer a complete ecosystem (heh) and after all, Microsoft IS legitimately good at the ecosystem stuff, cheezy videos aside. Of course the fanboys will be jumping in with the "total ripoff dude!" comments, any moment now....
Mandatory_Field
I had a zune 80gb. The software sucked, didn't even read my artwork in my songs. The player itself was nice. Though artwork looks like crap on it. So I'm back to Ipod
droalex
Im really looking forward to better and better integration of Xbox Live features and Zune. I love using my 360 as hub and if I can complete the link between my 360 and PC then I'd be willing to buy more TV shows online.
MarkHawk
Bless their little hearts. It's almost like a real store. And look, they even have real things.
Oh, how dear!
Slappy McSlapp
Lol, Zune.
leetXcore
Well, it only makes PERFECT sense...
...which is why it's taken Microsoft SOOOO damn long.
