GTA IV Leaked Online, Piracy Wins Again
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:30 AM on April 24, 2008
GTA IV, supposedly the biggest thing in the history of modern electronic entertainment, has been leaked on the internet. If you're one of the ones with a modded 360 and a copy of the game, disconnect from Live before you play it. Rockstar is watching out for people who go online with these before they're supposed to. I mean every knew it was going to be released, maybe not this soon before street date but still...
I think most people will be buying a copy though, all the ps3 people, and the xbox users who know how great this game is going to be.
Then again I envy the xbox people who get to play it nearly a week before me :p

I really hope people that steal this game still buy it. The last thing we need is Take-Two to sell the EA because of sales of GTA:IV.
That being said... I wish I had a modded 360 and a good internet connection!!

So how does Take Two know if it is a pirated version?
I mean, with every huge game release some stupid store is going to leak it before the official street date.

You know what? They didn't see fit to release GTA IV for the PC, so I hope they get ripped off a LOT. If they release a PC version, I'll buy it to encourage future releases. For now, though--scroo 'em.

It's horrible to steal games in my opinion. Those people who worked on games such as GTA have spent countless hours (and dont try to argue that about music) working on the project. Same goes for movies in my opinion. I may occasionally grab a movie but I will 99 out of 100 times buy that movie. Either way, stealing games is WRONG people.

@Hiphopopotamus:
That made me laugh... It's sooo true. When GTA: Liberty City Stories came out for PSP, I bought it just so I could play NES games on my PSP, because that was the only way to play homebrew on v1.6, or whatever the hell it was I had, at the time.
To this day I still haven't played LCS... I wonder if it's any good :c /

@HeartBurnKid: Actually, I didn't realize that, but yeah, it does look that way. Well, then, I just hope their revenue stream is screwed for the six months of PC-release lag. :)
Seriously, I'm tired of having to choose between a poor port of a console game but getting to play with mouse and keyboard like god intended, or having to play on a console with a miserable D-pad or thumbstick.
God, this must be my generation's version of "get off my lawn!"... I'm old...

@jgravitas: Welcome to gawker. Edit? Delete? These are but crutches for the literary decrepit to lean upon.
Back on topic, the sooner this game comes out the better, because my cubemate will stop yearning. You'd think this game was like the second coming of jesus in the form of Gisele.

@imTheKing: You may be right, but it's a more complicated issue than you portray. First, I've known too many software developers (although not game developers specifically) that use illicit copies of other software; we're not dealing with lily-white hands here.
Secondly, and more importantly from my perspective, aggregate piracy has an overall impact on the industry as a whole, and as a steadfast PC gamer, I want to "steer" that effect away from a popular perception that PC games are pirated more than other platforms. I'll continue to encourage console piracy any way I can, and continue buying the PC games I like.

@imTheKing: Frankly, I usually end up buying the game, then downloading a No-CD crack or a cracked version just so I don't have to deal with the game maker's ridiculous, draconian copy protection. And I do have to admit that, while I'm on Usenet downloading the game that I've already bought and paid for, sometimes my eye does wander to something that maybe I haven't...
So there you go. Copy protection is indirectly responsible for my piracy. If all developers followed the lead of Stardock and left the copy protection off completely, I'd have no reason to go hit Usenet anymore.

Not even tempted to pirate this game. Not saying I haven't in the past but all the ones I really enjoy I buy. The gaming industry has gotten more than its pound of flesh from me so I feel no guilt over the rare game I might procure when I'm broke.

just buy it it deserves a real copy! this isnt some crappy game it's GTA! And do you really want to get stuck with a banned 360 for a week early play? its not worth it.
especially considering this gta has really good multiplayer apparently.
also the DL is for PAL Hacked 360's only

@ttech10: The amount of people that pirate this game compared the amount that purchase it will be insignificant. Many of the people that pirate the game would have never bought it in the first place. They won't be losing much money.

Imagine spending tens of millions of dollars and a couple of years of your life on a project and days before you show it to the world someone steals it.
and THEN the newspaper of all people announces to the world that its available for free and how the 'lucky ones' can avoid being caught.
Talk about adding insult to injury.
Oh that's right.. piracy doesn't actually hurt anyone so it's ok. nm. resume torrenting.

I've seen the pirate scene since it was fourteen 1.2mb 5.25" floppies with Windows 1.0 handed off in a parking lot. Justify whatever, but a lot of people have wasted a lot of money on crap games and porn in the past, and with a zero refund policy you take all the risk it's going to be crap or not even run on your system.
Trying a pirate version is risky too, so many people on torrent sites download it, chuck a trojan in it, then reseed the new torrent file with all the same information and description.
I've personally bought every game I ever liked. But for many, the thought of rushing to the store and risking $54 to try it, and if it sucks you're screwed is too much.
Piracy is a mixed bag, the kids with no money weren't going to buy it anyway, but yet they make a lot off people who buy it, find out it's crap, then would never keep it if it weren't for the no refund policy they got stuck with.
And yes I agree programmers aren't some angelic people who buy all their software, they use pirated stuff too, most don't make that much. The game companies make millions off titles that are junk, but can't be returned. If you buy most things and it's not as good as they said it was, you can get your money back, but never with a game, risk is all on you buddy!
