Fring is the World's First True iPhone VoIP App
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:53 AM on April 16, 2008
Ignoring previous "iPhone VoIP" apps like Jah Jah, which are only VoIP after you connect to their analogue to VoIP bridge, this Fring app seems to be the first real VoIP solution for the iPhone/iPod Touch. To get in on this action you need a jailbroken iPhone, Wi-FI access, and you'll be able to call regular phones using either SkypeOut or SIP (your prices will be determined on which SIP provider you use and how much SkypeOut charges for your particular call). Best of all Fring has built-in IM capabilities for Skype, Google, ICQ, MSN, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo contacts. The download and install are free. [Fring Install Instructions]

So is it possible to run this program in the background? Otherwise instant messaging is pretty worthless to me...

@futureboy: You'll need the Touchmod mic. Lifehacker's got a bit on it: [lifehacker.com]

@Jason Chen: Thanks. If T-Mobile really drops the prices in Germany this month, I may actually get one...

Yeah, if I could get this with an unlimited data plan, I might finally have enough reason to buy an iPhone.

So what's the cheapest (or free) VoIP service? I could see this being great for traveling in other countries.

VoIP + iPhone = goodbye land line. But I'll wait until June to avoid the jailbreaking skullduggery.
GPS now Apple, GPS (and 3G, of course). And you will have created the single greatest single gadget one could need.

How come on their site it says Fring is 1.0, but on installer it is still a prerelease?

@cardboardbelt: brilliant
The only problem I see w/ using skype on a touch is no speakers for speakerphone, but that's a small issue for free calls

WOW, installed it and just called home to test it out...got the answering machine, and found myself needing to leave a message, like "Hi! I am calling from my iPhone, well, from skype ON my iPhone, you know...it works!!!". My mom will be like "WTF?!?!"
Then, I called myself on my other MSN address, that was fun, and free! We had a great chat...I would love to try this out with someone else on their iPhone, but i'm the only person I know with one...
My iPhone is prety HOT after all this fringing around, and I don't think it cause it is as excited as I am about all this :P you guys? Anyone test the battery usage? any exploding iPhones yet?
I have the urge to call myself again...

@lyndwode: Is the battery made by sony? If so, drop it run and call a bomb squad, preferably with a mooninite as your background.

@cardboardbelt: Forget 98, it's 99 that gets invited to all the parties, if I'm gonna party, I'm gonna party like it's 1999.
