eBay Rips Off Users Increases Security By Making You Use PayPal

800px-EBay_Logo.svg.png

Time to wake up Australia – big business is about to bend you over – again – and sodomise you with your own ignorance.

This time it’s eBay Australia. They’ve decided that our country is even more risky than the rest of the world when it comes to online security, so they’ve decided to get rid of all payment options for online auctions except cash and PayPal. And cash is only available when the product is picked up from you, which means all online transactions have to be through Paypal.

In their own words:

“eBay is no longer willing to stand aside and allow payment methods
on the site that are proven to be less safe for consumers. You’re four times less likely to have a problem on eBay if you pay with PayPal than, say, if you used internet banking.”

That nugget was from eBay trust and safety director Alastair MacGibbon. Thank heavens he’s looking out for us. He dismissed the theory that they were merely doing it to grab some extra cash, considering they own PayPal, which charges a fee of between 1.1 and 2.4 per cent per credit card payment.

eBay’s international stores plan on monitoring the developments in Australia (read: how pissed off we get when the changes come into effect in June), before deciding whether to make the same changes.

All I can say is that the Trading Post has never looked more appealing.

Remember when Altavista was search engine of choice? Thought it would never end and it did. This is just one more step in eBay Australia squeezing every last drop out of us. For now, like many sellers I am stuck with eBay because buyers love it. Ironically I welcome paypal, despite the motivation for its introduction being completely flawed. Now I will have buyers emailing me asking if they can pay by whatever other method. Currently I can already list as paypal only if I want to. Unfortunately good auction sites have all ready come and gone in Australia. Oztion is having a go, but it is not real competition. The time is right for Amazon, Google or perhaps a new Microsoft/Yahoo to blow eBay out of the water. Nobody minds paying a commission on a sale, but with Australian listing fees 20 times higher than other countries, what loyalty we once had is well gone. Build it and we will come.

There is an Australian alternative to ebay – oztion.com.au. Cheaper to list items, workability similar to ebay it just needs more items for sale and buyers. Howabout we give an Aussie startup a free plug out of all this and start to boycott Ebay

  • ATOMIC ANDY

ACCC is already involved since yesterday:

Section 47 of the Trade Practices Act prohibits exclusive dealing which broadly involves one trader imposing restrictions on another’s freedom to choose with whom, in what or where it deals. In some cases, exclusive dealing is prohibited outright and, in other cases, only where it substantially lessens competition.

One day after making the announcement, law firm Deacons, representing eBay, filed an “exclusive dealing” notification with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) requesting immunity from the Trade Practices Act.

In the documents, Deacons partner Calum Henderson argued that the PayPal-only policy would not substantially lessen competition, and the mandatory procedures were for the sake of security and customer protection.

Pay to list. Pay to sell. Pay to accept payment. When are people going stop touching their toes and stand up and be counted. This is nothing other than outrageous. We live in a democracy. How dare eBay tell us what we can and can’t do. I’m sure Trading post will see an increase in business.

  • Ted.H.

i can see it coming where ebay gets rid of all hobby sellers out there and stick with taxfile registered users.they will want all sellers to be paying taxes this way and do tax returns so our government gets their bit.can you see it coming ???.they wont be getting my bit.im off…!!!!!!!!!!

I Just got my first BAD feedback from a buyer with only (3) history…I can’t respond !!! when I was in the right ! My over 1.000 seller name is trashed…..til’ I build up positives again…HATE the GREEBAY Fees HATE the Paypal “FORCED” option…Not sure where to go as I sell mainly secondhand…there is not much of what I sell on Oztion…need more options ???

  • Reg

Well I used to use feebay a lot as a seller, but not any more. The greedy bastards have put fees up once too often, fees, fees and more fees, and now this PayPal only (another fees grabber)
I wont even buy on feebay any more, not interested in even looking.

  • Auction Guy

I agree … I’ve been using ebay for years and until a year or so ago I was doing ok. I had my own store … lots of sales was doing really well. But with all the fee hikes I have been driven right out of business. If any one is going to use any alternative auction site my I make a suggestion??? Use http://www.onlineauctionexchange.com it has to be one of the best auction sites other than ebay … all basic listings are free and I now have a new online store for .99 a month … I’m doing good again thanks to this new site … we should all do the same.

  • David Stow

I am opposed to this blatant money grab by Ebay. In addition to fees, you are even ripped off on exchange rate for international transactions. I have noticed some US sellers are still listing that they won’t accept Paypal because of the compulsion edict, the conflict of interest and other changes that adversely affect sellers.
It will be interesting to see if Ebay kicks them off. I don’t believe Aus ACCC will stand up to them – its toothless against the money power. Enough corporate greed – time to go elsewhere.
