Blackmagic USB Recorder Captures Direct Video For iPods, YouTube
Blackmagic's new USB compatible video recorder promises to simplify your video recording process by utilising the H.264 format for playback on the iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, YouTube, IPTV, and the Web. It also features analogue component, NTSC, PAL and S-Video inputs as well as simple software that should make it easy to get your video into the appropriate size. The recorder will ship this July in standard and SDI versions for US$119 and US$299 respectively. [Blackmagic via ecoustics]

This thing will be obsolete once the hauppauge device comes out in May:

The component version seems useful for consumers with VHS. The SDI version is only useful if you do a ton of beta to h264 conversions under tight deadlines.
When time isn't and issue, I rather use final cut and my compression program of choice.

Just in time for the end of NTSC next year!

@aec007:
yeah! no kidding! LOL! OMG!
sweet feathery christ... i know. how about this?
go look up SDI and then come back to me and tell me what gear you personally own with an SDI connection. or even better... if you have ever even used or even seen something with SDI! i bet it will be a really fascinating list!
meanwhile those that understand what SDI signifies thinks this is incredibly impressive for something this small.

or I could just use a screen recorder and stereo mix for free?

OK so I just realized what kind of a mistake I made. There's no way this thing will have the bandwidth to capture uncompressed HD. Either way, though, might be cool for a laptop HTPC or something. Or for professionals that want to capture something in the field.

Am I reading that right? Analog component input? Uhhh... that's actually really significant if it can capture HD over an analog connection.

WOW ! A crappy-video-quality USB recorder!

This would be pretty sweet coupled with a laptop to setup a small Media Center PC that wouldn't take up a giant chunk of real estate in my living room.
