Xperia X1 Delayed Till 2009?

3:30AM March 3, 2008 | Haroon Malik

We brought you news that Sony Ericsson’s first Windows Mobile smartphone would ship mid 2008, however, the guys at Sony Ericsson Blog have spotted an official Sony Ericsson webpage showing the expected release date as 10/02/2009.

Considering Sony Ericsson Blog are as reliable as a really reliable source, and that they have pointed us in the direction of an official webpage backing their claim, this looks to be solid. If true, the wow factor of the Xperia X1 just may fade a little; who knows what we may see by 2009? We’ll bring you any updates as we receive them, but a delay would surely suck big time for those awaiting the Windows Mobile 6.1 running, dual touch and QWERTY sliding, sexy beast that is the Xperia X1. If the phone will be released later on this year, how come, that I can buy this phone already in Brussels (Belgium) and Delft (Netherlands)for €200 ???

The €200 ‘phone you’ve seen would be the Chinese-made CECT X1, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the featureset of the SE X1 (other than more-than-slight visual similarity).

Do a search on eBay for “X1″ and you’ll see plenty of the CECTs available – they’re GSM-only, the slide is length-wise to reveal a standard numeric keypad, and it has a much smaller (and lower resolution) screen, the same as used on other CECT ‘phones. On the bonus side, it does include a built-in analogue TV receiver.

Interestingly, there appears to be a genuine SE X1 available on eBay, being offered for sale from South Africa, and currently bid up to USD$2000. The item number’s 250280221877 (ending 10pm AEST 18th August) if anyone’s interested – personally I wouldn’t touch a product like that being offered by a seller with only 15 feedback points, even if the price was reasonable.
