Toshiba HD DVD Loses Less than Expected
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 8:25 PM on March 19, 2008
Seems like the rumours on Toshiba's $1 billion loses on HD DVD were greatly exaggerated by a mere $342 million: the operating loss for HD DVD will be just $653 million. And still, they are turning a profit, although reduced 31% from previous forecasts. [Bloomberg]

You gotta give Toshiba credit for waging this battle almost single handedly for so long against a number of market giants and making such a relatively small loss on the product but a profit overall. If Microsoft had stepped up to the plate and been more of a an active participant then it could have been soooo different.

It takes a Jesus to spell "losses" wrong twice in one headline and one paragraph.

How can Toshiba take a $653m loss and be turning a profit?
You either take a loss, or make a profit, you can't have both.

Toshiba's REAL losses are going to actually be multi billions of dallas. One of Toshiba's main sources of income is royalty payments from the DVD patten pool which Toshiba is the main company (and was (is) with HD DVD). As sales of DVDs decline (already started) and are replaced by BD sales Toshiba's profits will decline.

Alive one second ago? If the trail of Gizmodo posts shows anything, it's that HD-DVD had a slow, starving death.

@stinkyboy: Maybe they are following the examples set by US car manufacturers.

@stinkyboy:
That's easy. You subtract the $653M that they lost on the HD-DVD product line, from the profit that they earned on everything else that they make and sell.

@Julien321:
Incorrect. Most of you have no idea where Toshiba makes their money because you only know them from the whole format war BS. They are number 3 in semiconductor sales. Behind only Samsung and Intel. btw DVD sales aren't declining perse. They are stagnant. Meaning that only new releases are selling because people have built up their collection of old movies.
@stinkyboy
Do you know how to read? it was only a couple of sentences and you still could not read and comprehend. The loss from HD DVD will be $653 million, but they are still making a profit from everything else.

"Actually, Julien321 is correct, Toshiba makes a mint off of DVD royalties...." Thanks NutManIV
Here is link that will give you an idea of the kind of monies involved with DVD royalties (Toshiba has by far the most DVD pattens). In 1993 Toshiba invented DVD (then called SDD) and beat out Sony's competing MMCD format. Now the tables have turned.

@NutManIV:
Actually, Julien321 is correct, Toshiba makes a mint off of DVD royalties. I work for a Toshiba subsidiary and everytime the suits from Toshiba walk in the door with their PowerPoints, one of the first slides they show is where they make their money and DVD royalties is always at the top of the list, along with everything else you mentioned.

It's sad that you even had to explain that to him.
