Toshiba Dynabook SS RX1 Laptop First to Have 128GB SSD, Apparently
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:04 PM on March 17, 2008
Toshiba's Dynabook SS RX1 now has an optional 128GB solid state drive built in, which Toshiba is claiming as a world first. It certainly beats the MacBook Air's SSD option, and is similarly slender, plus it squeezes in an optical drive. It has a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, Intel graphics and a 12.1-inch 1280 x 800 pixel screen, and a claimed battery life of 12.5 hours, which seems huge. It's also configurable without the SSD but with an 80GB hard drive and a CDMA card for mobile internet goodness. Available from April in Japan at first, for around US$4,000. [Ascii]

Nothing else stands out? Not even the fact that it's the Asian version of the Toshiba R500 which has a transflective screen and is the thinnest 'full featured' notebook with an integrated optical drive?

Wow, why not carry with it a 4 million killowatt capacitor, too. That would also be a first and likely even more expensive!

You all could do what I've been saying since the Macbook Air came out and get essentially this same computer in the Toshiba Portege R500-S5003, which has a 64GB SSD, an optical drive, and is lighter than the Macbook Air -- for $500 less than the Macbook Air. Or get the Hard Drive version for even less.

Wow thats an expensive but cool laptop! Why even compare it to the Air? Doesn't every laptop beat the Air in some way or another?

@Kaiser-Machead: besides your name pointing out you're a mac fanboy even if you werent i'd agree with you.
$4000 thats a MacBook Pro with the faster prossor, high res screen, 300gb hdd, and way more.
I'd hold off and get a macbook pro.
You'd be missing out on the 12 hours though but 4 and a half hours of wireless goodness is better in my book.

12 hours? That's with the extra external battery, yes?
$4,000? Pass.

A step in the right direction. That's too much money for me though. Maybe by this Xmas it'll come down enough.
