This is How a High Tech Smart Toaster BBQ's Your Bread
Posted by Brian Lam at 9:12 AM on March 21, 2008
Breville is selling this US$130 high tech toaster. For that price, you get a stainless steel case, an LED indicator and slider that is as smooth as a DJ mixer's cross fader, motorised lifts and clamps that are capable of 7 pounds of lift (yes), and electrical elements that are rated to last 90 years.
The LEDs are a nice touch, because they double as a countdown timer, but the elements are surprisingly strong. I burned my cheap wheat grain, despite the "look and check" function. It's not the toaster's fault, I just underestimated the power of this thing. And also the bell is kind of not loud enough for my tastes. For US$130, its a nice toaster, but how about reducing the totally unnecessary lift power in the motors and giving me some sort of burn detector. Also, Wilson has used some Breville gear before, and although the build quality looks amazing, he's said that they break eventually. Something about being too high tech for their own good. But these are supposedly sturdier and have a 1 year warranty, so take comfort in that. [Music by the King]

i'll stick to my $6 toaster. if someone invents a toaster that'll clean the bread crumbs automatically, then i'd consider spending more

That Breville power cord is a great design too (1st photo). Has a loop for easy extraction. Too bad it's patented and only available on Breville products.

@Soundman1402: Actually, it has to do with carbon particles and radioactive decay rates, and not heat.

That's the geekiest toaster I've ever seen. Very cool. Brian, if you don't want burnt toast, set the thing lower. Some people might like burnt toast, and if you were toasting, say, pumpernickle, a visual burn sensor would do no good.
After I burned a bagel in my POS toaster and set off the smoke alarm near my kitchen, I wondered why they can't put smoke-detector sensor technology in the toaster. When it sniffs smoke, instead of sounding an alarm, it ends the toast cycle. Must have something to do with the heat...
Funny that the warranty on a toaster with heaters that last 90 years, is 1 year. :)

The "Take a look" feature is the best and worst thing ever. I am always so curious about what my toast looks like that I would never keep it in long enough to heat up.

The "A bit more" button might just be worth about 50% of the entire product. Which only makes it about 25% overpriced...

If you like your toast well enough to drop coin on this thing and if you have a Nokia S60 phone, Nokia would like to talk to you:
"Do you like technology? Do you like mobile phones? Do you like software? Do you like people? Do you like being the first to know about new technology? Do you like toast? "

The best toaster I ever had was one I found one the side of the road. A bunch of household items had apparently fallen off a truck.

I grew up with a similar toaster.
It didn't have the LEDs of course, but it did raise and lower slowly.
Sunbeam was it?
That thing was extremely cool and we all mourned when it died.
Other toasters have come and gone since then, but none since have captured that coolness.
-until now of course! :D
Nice.

I BOUGHT ONE years ago. It's the best toaster EVER. Mine is a little older and lacks the buttons, but it DOES have the LED display and the ugly slider is a sexy dial. It looks nice on my counter and I don't have to eat shitty toast that is half burned and half untoasted.
It also beeps really loud when my toast is done. Now I can read all of the interesting gizmodo articles while my toast is being perfectly ripened without worrying if I'm going to miss out on the hotness required to melt the butter instantly.
mmm. Toast.

I don't need a toaster to tell me when toast is done, and yo quiero!

This is one of those "money" brands. My roommates bought their 130 coffee grinder. And it has all the right line items on the box. But the stupid thing just grinds the coffee into this little container that they couldnt figure out how to not spill grounds all over the place so every time you pull it out you have to wipe down the counters. Really lame.

I got a GE at Wal-Mart for 30 bucks, and it makes toast perfectly, and it's chrome and looks good on the counter. For a hundred bucks more, I could have gotten motorized lift to replace the effort I use with my hand?
Nah.
