Steve Jobs' Music Poster Boy Reports iTunes Problem, Wonders If Apple Spies Him
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:20 PM on March 25, 2008
John Mayer is the guitarist who sometimes closes Apple events with a small gig (he comes right after you turn off the Quicktime broadcast to check the Apple Store,) and Steve Jobs' favourite music poster boy this side of Bob Dylan. Last week, Mayer contacted Apple about a problem with iTunes using the bug reporting tool which appears after a crash. Having sent my own share of bug reports, from neutral to humorous to sarcastic to plain mad-I'm-going-to-kill-you-all-with-a-spoon, I find his diatribe rather charming and candid:

He adds in his blog:
I'll let you know if I get a response from anyone at Apple. I wonder if somebody on the other side is really going to read it ... I can hear it now, the squeak of a chair pushing away from a desk as a man grinds his cigarette into an ashtray, stands up waving a printout over his head and screams "WE GOT AN iTUNES CRASH OVER HEEAH!!!" Because in my mind everything looks like a '60s era spy movie.
Actually, it feels to more like contacting the Wizard of Oz to me, but I guess that John is used to spies and Men in Black every time he has to go to see The Steve to play with his toys.
Do you write this kind of letter in the bug reporters of Mac OS X or Windows? Are they neutral? Fun? Angry? Don't you wish you could draw pictures of genitals and send them? Don't you? Huh? HUH? OK, so maybe that's just me. Post your answers in the comments. [John Mayer's Blog—thanks Camperton]

Safari crashed at least 5 times a day for me (no exaggeration) so I've left pretty much every kind of feedback imaginable. I recommend books, leave movie reviews, tell them stories of wild Friday nights, and even update them with scores of meaningless high school basketball games. One day Safari will not crash due to my in-depth feedback, I'm sure of it.

Wow. Movie dick clips aside (and I won't even make any gratuitous John Mayer references), I was so gratified to find out that I'm not the only one to find Safari to be a crash-laden piece of sh*t. Seriously. Where does Apple get off intimating that their stuff always "just works" and that Vista is crap? I've never had a Vista crash, and even XP is stable once you get wonky (3rd-party) drivers sorted out. For that matter, I never had as much problems with (sorted out) NT 3.51 and 4.0 as I did with OS/X 10.2 -- with only Apple software loaded. Just today I had problems with the much vaunted Leopard not wanting to properly close a DivX player session. That may have been the fault of DivX, but still... News for you Jobs: They're OSes not religions. They're all good, they're all bad. They all take turns pissing me off. Get off the high horse....

@smilleyofais: hmmm, what is your system? Casio G-Shock? oK, I have sent out like up to 50 bug reports, but never have bothered with a more elaborate description, if any. Things like: 'Tried to close a tab in Safari and it crashed' are already on the more talkative side. Now, I simply use FireFox, which is also a pain in the a.. and clogs my system after a while, but at least does not crash every time I close a tab (which has been Safari's predicament on my machine from 1.2 through 3.1, without any reactions from anybody). I wonder if anybody ever reads that, anyway. If they have like 100-200 coming in on a daily basis, they would already need at least 3-5 people alone to actually read them, let alone act on them.

I swear in the mid to late 90s John Mayer used to tour (at least twice) the coffee shops of Borders book stores. Yes I'm serious. He have a core of like 8 crazy girls and one guy show up. I was never there when he was, but I saw him or his helper setting up once and couldn't be bothered to stay. The other employees at the time did confirm that yes, he was a tool.
Of course, if I'm remembering wrong and it wasn't him, I'm the tool. Guess I'll have to live with that.

I'd like to report a problem. iTunes is 65 megs of bloatware. It runs slow as crap if you are really into music and have a large collection. If I move a folder on my computer, I have to do a ridiculously long rescan for the folder, and then I have to go and remove the old entries from the program, or else my songs are listed twice. I moved my Tagged new music from my untagged new music folder and it took almost an hour to scan the folder. Then all of the songs I moved were double listed.
Media Monkey is 6.5 megs and works way better, and the gold version automatically rescans any folders I designate, and removes entries it can no longer find.
As soon as MM works with iPod Touch, (beta version sort of works) I can hopefully ditch iTunes and only use it to add videos and upgrade the firmware.

Many people do. Apparently, whenever you correspond with Apple on a bug report, only the ones that start "John Mayer here" are accepted by the automated system for review. But 2 things come to mind:
- because he's John Mayer and he does music and he's buddies with Steve - I'm sure he gets 'special' treatment and the Apple cronies will jump on the issue immediately_ then we'll all see the john.mayer 2008-001 iTunes Bug Fix come out in a couple of weeks_

It's funny, because I work tech support for Apple, and people will call in all the time saying they've been sending bug reports, thinking I can see them or they pull up when they call automatically by voice recognition or some other magic. The reports go to engineers... and we tech support monkeys never ever see them. They don't even really tell us what they mean, unless you happen to be one of the upper tier folks with some Unix training, or if it's in an article describing some very very specific issue. So... yeah. They go to engineers.

Clapton has always been a boring, fake-ass lamer when outside a band; -exactly like Sting.
Just because JM has learned SRV's style and his version of Jimi's "Voodoo Chile", doesn't mean he's near as good. -He's just the most famous young guy playing guitar after the MTV/VH1 Axis of Evil jettisoned music by people who write their own songs, sing and play instruments, for more "commercial" stuff.
If Sting's superlame pseudo-jazz was trying to rip off Dave Matthews, it would be John Mayer.
Plus JM is a convicted man, as there was a Federal Law passed after SRV died stating that no new guitar player is allowed to pull a "What's That Smell?"-face. BB is the only one left with that license.

That's why you're seeing this gradual progression away from his "typical" stuff to newer throwbacks to the greats like Clapton, SRV, and Hendrix.

About people getting back to you when you submit bug reports, I think it has to do with a few things, mainly the dedication of the product's team, the saturation of bug reports, and the helpful:spam bug ratio. Personally, I am a beta tester for Meebo IM and I always get a personal response from their team, its a nice refresher to see them being real people so I always try to be refreshing to whoever reads my report, and that can be in many different ways.

@spaceman7: your post lost any credibility it ever had after the first sentence. Clapton is God. Every one knows that bb knows it, beck knows it, and Hendrix knew it(first trip to London: "you guy's think I could maybe meet eric Clapton") the only one that was clueless to this fact was the great SRV. @karmaghost: like I said: the guy's a tool. And the main reason is because he tried to please a crowd that he really didnt need to. The "pop" crowd was never going to acknowledge him as a guitar player. They don't even know what "instruments" are. And the "purist" turned on him because he tried to please the pop crowd. Its a miracle banging jessica Simpson didnt just kill his career. But you gotta give credit where it is due: he's a multi-Grammy winning guitarist and nothing is gonna change that. Plus I give him props for the SRV tatoo he has on his arm. I first heard of him at clapton crossroads guitar festival in 2004. Five seconds worth of licks and the crowd was stunned. Media Monkey on the other hand, does this automatically, with no extra software, every time I boot it up, and it only takes about 5 minutes to scan everything.

@excaza: I moved roughly 1900 songs, but I have 250 gigs of music. To remove the song from theone directory, and add it to the other, it took at least 2 hours. I don't know what the final time was, because I left the PC running, and went to sleep.
iTunes slows down my entire PC once the library gets that big. Media Monkey runs no problems.
