Samsung 8MP Mobile Phone Module is World's Slimmest
Posted by Haroon Malik at 7:55 PM on March 18, 2008
Good news for those who rely on their mobile phones for their photo- taking needs; Samsung has just unveiled the world's slimmest 8MP CMOS, which measures a diminutive, 28mm × 15.3mm × 8.5mm. The semiconductor was designed specifically for mobile phones, and it will push handsets beyond their current 5MP restraints. [Ed: 5MP as the limit in slimmer phones.] The new module, which is 10% more compact than current solutions, will have an ISO 1600 sensitivity, anti-shake capability, face detection technology, 1-cm macro and an automated shoot mode that is activated by silly, smiling faces.
We're guessing the technology for the smile shutter is what we have seen previously in some of the Cyber-shot range. All in all, it's great news for high end photography on your mobile phone and as the advanced CMOS sensors will go into mass production in Q3/4 this year, we won't have to wait too long either. ISO 1600? Seriously, thats exactly what a cameraphone needs, more noise. Gimme a 3 megapixel chip the same size. Would be more than adequate for the interweb, and you could (eek) print out 4x6's safely. Lets see what an 8x10 at 1600 iso from a phone looks like. Conjuring Bixby Snyder - "I'll buy that for a dollar."

Giz, to much noise for the noise.

Good to see those features make their way into cellphone cameras, but yikes, 8 megapixels from that size sensor? I'd like to see the photos it can produce.
I wonder why someone doesn't take one of the actual thin point and shoot cameras and add a touch screen phone to it? Or have they already?

...or keep the sensor the same size but with double the size of each photocell...

When will someone make a decent camera watch with a CMOS like this?

But guys!!! It has more megapixels!!1
So bloody tired of the MP race. I recently bought an ultra compact to always have with me and chose a 7MP rather than 1000MP model and the pictures still look pretty crappy IMHO (IXUS 75).

@distantbody: word. 9 billion MP looks like ass out of a tiny sensor and miniscule glass. Ive got an old dSLR that blows away some of the modern point and shoots went blown up because of the nice lense.
Plus youd need a crapton of light to prevent pictures looking like they were taken in a snowstorm.

Oh and on the MP thing, I have an old 800x600 Sony Mavica that takes floppies and has a fixed focus lens.
The pics are surprisingly good.
It's a Gestalt thing with cameras is what I'm saying.

@distantbody: Well at 5MP if you got that on a Smartphone that has more space that is a slider with a full keyboard and a decent screen of 3" or 4" then you shouldn't have to worry because in slidshow you'll see your pictures fine.
Most of my recent pictures were taken on my Wing and it only has a 2MP camera and i get pretty good pictures. The videos arent that great when seen on the computer screen but on the phone screen the videos are good.
I could already imagine what those pictures would look like. Hopefully these come to smartphones soon because i'd like to see something more than Nokia's 5MP camera phones and Ericsson's "revolutionary" half phone half camera combo's.

Gotta have good glass in front of that thing.

@SgtBeavis: they make those already, they call them cameras. No phone required.

Megapixels don't mean jack when the aperture is too small to take advantage of them.
How about making an ultra think CMOS that is wider and longer. Then put it behind a lens that can actually do the job. Camera phone pictures do not need to look like cheap crap.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH...... I am a photographer. I use a Nikon d80 and... mega pixels are not everything.
Here's a great quote from an article on SmugMug:
What you *really* want are "better" pixels, not more of them. Contrary to popular belief, adding more pixels to the same size sensor isn't going to help you very much. In fact, it may hurt. Why? It's reallly quite simple: A limited amount of light gets through the lens and hits the sensor in your camera. It's really quite small. At some point, if you cram more pixels into the same tiny space, those pixels aren't picking up enough light to be useful. Instead, they're making your photo noisier and reducing the quality.

Mega pixels work well to a point... after that it's pretty much about marketing. In fact unless you're planning on doing something of professional consequence Mega Pixels are not your friend and are not the be all and end all. ... In a digital SLR the mega pixels make a bit more sense, because the are complimented by an awesome sensor.... Use it... don't use it.

ISO 1600 for taking pictures of your friends barfing in the toilet?? 4mp at most for a camera phone. Decent optics for something in your pocket? We aren't trying to replace the camera here are we? Spend that money on increasing the quality of the sensors so we can actually get a good under the shirt shot! Now that is what I am looking for!

Well, this is the first I had heard of the smile-shutter thing. Now if only they could make it so it'll take the picture while everyone is smiling, no one is blinking, nobody's doing bunny ears, etc. I think this would be great for my family. =-]

Just what we need, 3400x2300 images of grainy crap. Like the others said, screw megapixels and increase the sensor quality.

dont know about you guys, but i'm at 800x600 and it's enough. i'd rather have a decent-rez sensor with no noise than a high-rez sensor with lots of noise.
