Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 7000 and Digital Media Keyboard 3000, WOW!
Posted by Benny Goldman at 1:40 AM on March 12, 2008
Microsoft continues to step up their design game with two keyboards to follow last month's good-looking mice. The Wireless Laser Desktop 7000 bundle includes a 2.4GHz wireless keyboard and the previously available 7000 wireless laser mouse. The keyboard was designed for Vista and features an Aero-inspired translucent border, three assignable favourite keys, and the Comfort Curve design.
The Digital Media Keyboard 3000 is the more basic offering of the two. The corded keyboard offers five favorite keys and quick access to features such as Flip 3D and Windows Media Player.
The 7000 bundle will retail for US$130—the keyboard is not sold separately—when it is available in April. The 3000 sells for US$30, and is available in June. Not bad Microsoft, not bad at all. [Microsoft]

finally, the WOW starts now!
(albeit a year and a half too late...not to mention this has nothing to do with desktop OSes.)

Ah yes, the "COPY LOGITECH MORE!!" approach is working very well for Microsoft hardware design.
Logitech just doesn't get enough props for good design... I've got two Harmony remotes, a G15 keyboard, two MX1000 laser mice, and desktop speakers... all excellent in form and function. I really miss using their wireless PS2 controllers, too; the second Logitech releases their own version of the DualShock3, I'm all over that (assuming it's Bluetooth-enabled).

"Aero-inspired translucent border".
Tell me something, is a description like that supposed to entice me into buying this keyboard?

Ya gotta hope the 7000 works a lot better than the OS that inspired it.

They need to take whoever names these things out back and shoot them.
They already have a "7000" bundle (the Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000). So now they make things easier for consumers by introducing ANOTHER "wireless 7000" desktop.
Smart thinking.

Further evidence that Bill Gates was wrong when he said software companies should not make hardware. In fact, one could argue that the best products Microsoft has ever made have happened when they started designing hardware. These keyboards are excellent examples.

Microsoft does make some awesome keyboards but I prefer the Logitech mice.

I admit the design looks good, but I don't like how they make the keys different sizes. I have typed on a similar Microsoft designed keyboard and I was mistyping because the key sizes were all different. I own the Logitech wave keyboard and think it is fantastic. They were able to keep the keys all the same size.

I guess it was just the 8000. I was worried for a second that I had either time traveled or the crack-smoking was catching up with me.

I could have sworn I saw these and an 8000 series at Frys back in December. It was wireless, but had a USB charging station, which sounded awesome, but the fact that it was $299 wasn't so awesome. I bought a $50 Logitech set.

Looks nice, but I don't understand why they can't sell the keyboard separately. Logitech does the same with some of theirs...

This may be the only thing they have ever designed thats just really really nice looking. I still heart my apple keyboard but thats a really nice clean design. It looks kind of elegant.

Why is it so hard to get a decent wireless keyboard with a touchpad, trackball, or trackbutton built in? Hasn't anybody accounted for people using these in their laps?

Once I got onto the Natural series, I haven't been able to use anything else.
While I'd love a few additional features (backlight, USB ports), I'm willing to live without for the comfort....since I'm apparently on the computer 12 hours a day, one way or another. :P

I still lament the passing of my favorite old-and-white Logitech trackman marble wheel.
I have two left that I'm nursing along.
The newer gray one doesn't fit my hand quite as well.
For keyboards I prefer the (relatively) new Microsoft Natural ergonomic keyboard 4000. It's the only one I've found that competes with my original Microsoft ergonomic keyboards.
The ones above would be deal breakers for me due to lack of proper function keys.

@HeartBurnKid: The Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 and 8000 keyboards have a trackpad.

The funny thing is that the Digital Media 3000 is essentially the flat, non-ergonomic version of MS' Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 (it has pretty much the exact same hot key layout). I just hope that it lasts longer, as the NEK4000s tend to get loud after a few months (I have gone through 4 already).

This is a nice bundle, love the quiet keyboard and the mouse is way more comfortable than my old one!

Why can't I get a decent natural keyboard that is wireless without bundling it with a crappy mouse? Logitech does the same thing, great keyboard, bad mouse.
I don't want bundles, STOP bundling keyboards and mice! Let me by your best products separately! I don't want to pay extra for a mouse, I have a MX1000, I don't need, nor want another mouse.
Why won't MS and Logitech learn? I hate marketing people.
