Meridian's Latest 1080p Projector Is One Bad MF10
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 4:00 AM on March 15, 2008
How much contrast does one man need? Meridian's MF10 1080p projector is said to deliver 30,000:1, and for the low-end-automobile sticker price of US$15,000. (Too bad it's not scalable: I'll settle for 10,000:1 for US$5,000—or hell, a 30:1 for US$15.) This projector doesn't use the more common lower-end engine based on TI's DLP chip, but a three-chip system based, like Sony's SXRD, on an LCD derivative called "liquid crystal on silicon." In this case, it's JVC's D-ILA technology. Each chip has the 1920x1080 resolution, and manages red, green or blue. There's a motorised lens with 2X zoom capability for smaller rooms, but who are we kidding? If you can afford this, you're gonna have a room big enough to do it justice. [Meridian]

While Meridian does hand pick the DILA panels, and does pay close attention calibrating each and every projector before it leaves the factory, the truth is that you can have 95% of the performance of this projector with the JVC DLA-RS2U, which the MF10 is based on.
The DLA-RS2U has the same contrast, same light output, and actually has a respectable scaler built in (Genum VX2). Best of all, it RETAILS for $8,000 and you can usually find it for a bit less (just make sure its from a respectable {authorized} dealer!).
Also, while JVC sells its own branded anamorphic motorized lens kit (2.35:1 CinemaScope aspect ratio) for $6,000 retail, it is the exact same unit that Panamorph sells the same kit for $2000! P.S. The lens isn't for smaller rooms, it is to give your theater the same aspect ratio screen as a movie house!
So for $10,000 retail, you can have an almost identical experience to the Meridian customer who paid $30,000!

"liquid crystal on silicon." You mean LCOS ? Which was the original name for Sonys branded SXRD best tv's made IMO And JVC's DLIA .. which are all basically the same tech. I thought i had a point m but it turns out i am just mumbling

Too bad the price isin't comparable to a Sony SXRD. Well... the rear projection sets anyway (soon to go the way of the dodo). I'd throw my KDS-55A3000 up against any LCD or plasma any day.... er rather this month (due to display tech advancement speed.)
