Meizu M8, Something You Burn in a Paper Bag on Someone's Porch
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:59 AM on March 5, 2008
Engadget scored some time with a Meizu M8 mini One prototype board at CeBIT. And even while this demo is not constrained by the size of the M8 final hardware, the experience leaves a lot to be desired. The touchscreen has major, persistent lag issues (though Meizu claims it's a demo hardware issue) and, as you'll see, the software is too buggy to last two minutes before crashing. While we've been looking forward to Meizu's iPhone knockoff for a long time now, we're wondering if it's not too early for our anticipation to throw in the towel. [engadget]

LMAO THIS IS HILARIOUS. I stand by my same statements that I've been making since last year when I bought an M6 miniplayer. Meizu has horrible support. You might see 1 software/hardware upgrade a year. If Dane-Elec doesn't get fully engaged in support, this thing will be a flop just like all of the other Apple rip-offs(even though the Meizu lines usually have better features than Apples).

Well haven't people claimed apple copied the M8?...where are they?...you're new sh-box is almost ready. It's getting there, they just have to fold up the display model and pack it into a nice plastic case. Have fun with that!

Meizu will eventually pull this off, but not well. I got one of the original miniplayers. It was horrible. it froze constantly, the touch thing sucked and it wasn't long before it wouldn't turn on anymore.
maybe now those miniplayers are better now, but this m8 is going to go through the same problems.
I broke down and bought nano skinny... still works and was surprised to really like it.

This iPhone sucks.
I hope Meizu makes one.

My favorite quotes are: Similar to iPhone? "No, this is based on Windows CE." GUI? "Uh, no, this is not the final version."

I really can't see the point of this... It's such a blatant plagiarism that it won't be able to be sold in any country with anything resembling intellectual property laws... For use in those countries without intellectual property laws, why not just create compatible hardware and install the Apple OS?

@GruffPelt: It's difficult without the benefit of reverse engineering. Since it's release, I can only imagine how many iPhones Meizu has burned through.

I think most people and companies, including Meizu and other cellphone makers, completely underestimated how much time it would take to make a multi-touch iPhone-like interface. Just because it looks simple doesn't mean it is.

Well, I'm surprised it even exists. I always thought it was a cheap attempt by Meizu to cash in on the iPhone hype that was circulating last year and advance their name in the mainstream. I always thought Meizu never even intended to produce the M8, but it appears they are just reverse engineering the iPhone like mad as we type.

this is sad for real, not only do they make the cosmetics look like the iphones but they also made the UI and the look pretty much the same

I guess Steve was right when he talked about how far ahead the iPhone was.
He probably took into account how Apple would be preparing next generation models while companies like Meizu still work to copy the first.

Looks like their making 'progress', that is to say, their UI resembles Apple's more than ever now. I guess it will make the injunction lawsuits that much easier =P.
Plus, they're not shipping for another six months? So even just *copying* the iPhone takes years of work. Stunning.
The one interesting thing was seeing the prototype board with all the components splayed out for easy rework. It'd be interesting to see an iPhone board from a similar point in their development.

That was painful to watch. Is it really that hard to find someone who speaks a decent amount of english with a slight amount of technical know how and half a brain to run the demo for them?

@SchruteBuck: I beg to differ.
My t-mobile wing opens up app's way faster than that.
And i have an iphone contact list emulator nd it runs just like that one.
I wouldn't buy the meizu. With that much space it should be able to have hardware thats way better.

hahahaha!!
..well we can see now that neither nokia or sony-ericcson have the worst Touch UI..
still everyone is far from what the iPhone can do since release date, which is impressive.
This doesnt means that apple engineers have superpowers (sorry!)... it means that Apple took the lead working ahead of everyone else, to make a touch interface that works with minimal bugs, its fast, responsive and beautiful.
Sorry for the Meizu Team, im sure they feel like crap when they compare their uber hard work to the iPhone LOL
"why cant we do something like this on windows mobile???"

Meizu fanboys, this is a glimpse of your future.
I'm sure you won't mind the awkward stutters and pauses in the UI. After all, so what if you have to tap the same button over and over to get a response. You're too smart to be taken in by Apple, and that's what really matters. What's more, people will be so impressed with your fake Rolex and knocked-off designer sunglasses that they won't even notice that your iPhone is a fake, too.
You can still masturbate to the images of this stillborn iPhone clone if you want. Go ahead..it's okay. It's your fantasy, after all.
However, in the real world, you get what you pay for, and you pay for what you get. You'll eventually realize that after living with this turd for a while. If it ever actually drops out of Meizu's ass, that is.
It is absolutely ridiculous that this lame-ass prototype is the best they can do after 15 months, and it's totally bogus to blame the touch screen for the problems exhibited in this prototype. If that's all that's wrong here, why didn't Meizu just wait a little longer until they had a proper screen to demo?
My bullshit detector is pegged.

I think the problem is that they constantly change what they want to include in the phone. First they used a resistive touch screen, now a capacitive one. There's too many changes to count when they should've rushed out a less fancier one to compete with the iphone and slowly build ontop of that.

So... it seems when Meizu first learned about iPhone, they released some 3D design concept of a complete rip-off thinking something like "let's say we'll make it first, then we start thinking on how".
Now, months later, they still haven't even got close to making something functional.
Is that it? A huge-ass protoboard that tries to emulate an iPhonish cellphone which is still failing hard.
Seriously, I'm not even an iPhone fan, but I was willing those guys could pull something similar.
That video just killed the mood. By the time they come out with something that someone would even consider buying, if they do it, iPhone 2 will be already out. Even more now with all the "let's kill the rip-offs" efforts.

I don't think anyone who is making nasty comments about it being a "knock-off" has ever used a Meizu M6. If they had, they would have more faith in what the M8 will be like once it is finished.
