LionKing 800 Mobile Phone Has One Year Standby Time, Manufacturer Says (Verdict: Manufacturer May Smoke Too Much Skunk)
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:39 PM on March 13, 2008
The lion engraving on the back of this Chinese all-in-one cellphone/PDA is presumably what gives it its strange name. The strangeness doesn't end there though: it takes dual SIM cards ... and has a standby time of 365 days? Yes, this is what the manufacturer says. One year chaps.
A typo error, perhaps. But it does claim to have a "16800 mAh super-long standby" lithium battery, giving a three to five day talk time. It also packs in Bluetooth 2.0, e-book reading, MP3 and MP4 playing, four speakers, PDA functions and a 3.5-inch 240 x 320 pixel screen into one package. It even has dual 0.3 megapixel cameras and a transflash slot for memory expansion, including a 256MB one for free in the package. Though it looks fairly small, it's going to feel pretty large in your pocket: it's 0.79 inches deep.
It is apparently available for US$145. Sounds unlikely? Most probably. What do you think? [Solomobi]

What they probably mean is that it has a total LIFESPAN of one year. And they're being optimistic....

It might stand, for a year if you turned it off. My backup phone, which I leave in my glove box charged, stands by for about 6 months. It's just an old crappie Razr.

I'm only bustin' your chops Kit. :D
(I wouldn't know how to fix it so props to Ounce in all fairness.)
Yes it is a strange device. So strange that I'd like to spend some time with it just to see what it's capable of! :D
My guess is that it'll suck-diddly-uck, but I'd give it a shot.

It may be a year of standby, but the 'on' time is much shorter. So if you turn it on after 100 days to check the battery status... you just drained it by turning it 'on'. hehe

They also fail to mention the two-week charging time...

I think they mean one year is how long you'll have to stand-by on the organ recipient list in the hospital after the sketchy Chinese battery explodes in your chest pocket.

@HJTravels: but it isn't on and ready to receive calls. it is off and can hold a charge for 6 months... which isn't really "standby" per se.
generally "standby" means the former "on"-like state in my experience. i think the accepted term for the later is "off" not "standby".
bragging how long a phone can stay off doesn't seem the like the worlds best marketing bullet point.

Only four speakers? Where is the center channel and sub-woofer so I can get true 5.1 surround sound?!? What a rip-off.

A 16800 mAh battery, AKA a 16.8 Ah battery, is the kind of capacity used in a small to medium UPS -- think a lead acid battery about three times the size of your fist. Not the kind of capacity you can get out of a little square of lithium. Simply put, I think they're lying.

Wait, is this phone powered by a solar furnace...? If it is, I'll buy a few to power my giant mechs...couple that with the ps3's processor and the wii's motion sensing control. I WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE.
So who wants to build me a giant mech? You don't get paid, you'll constantly get poked by a stick when it looks like you're slacking and I promise I wont stomp on you with my mech.
So what was this topic again?

Apparently, these phones are available for upwards of $100. I have never used them but they claim to have a lot of features. They even come with a 6 month warranty. One year battery life sounds unlikely... but the price is correct.

It is most likely made of lead, just like the kids toys and toothpaste they ship to America.

I can't help but think maybe they meant 365 hours of standby and 5-6 hours of talk time... with that extra zero in battery capacity. But then again, you can buy 200GB Memory Sticks in China for $30... Either case, us Chinese can't spell for sh!t anyway (myself included) so it could just be mistranslation.
