Linux Last Man Standing In PWN 2 OWN Thunderdome
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:15 AM on March 30, 2008
The dust has settled on PWN 2 OWN and Linux FTW! The Ubuntu-equipped Sony VAIO was the only computer to get through the tournament unscathed, managing to elude the assembled hackers. On Thursday the MacBook Air was the first to go, followed the next day by the Vista-running Fujitsu, conquered by Shane Macaulay. No one, but no one, however, was able to bring down the penguin. Read the article and Vista did NOT get hacked... Adobe Flash running on Vista did though...
And also a bug/vunerability was disclosed for Linux but bascially the hacker said he was to 'lazy' to create the hack.

Mac OS X has by far more eye candy and Apple has some pretty computers out there but by no means is it more secure than Windows, people just don't waste their time in it because the amount of users that would be affected are just not enough.
Now linux in the other hand kicks ass...

Lets get this straight - OSX and Linux are FAR technically superior to Vista, because both are based on the super-duperness which is Unix and we know that Unix is a standard that has been around for years and that many businesses rely on. That and all of your servers run it.

OS X sucks, so does Vista, so does Linux. All of you need to STFU. I use OS X but I also don't have uber-sensitive data to protect so I don't really care. If you're worried about security, you should request OpenBSD at the next competition.
It should be noted that Vista was running SP1. Just an FYI.

So an OSX machine is no more secure when it comes to 'stupid user' hacks than a Vista machine and they all cheerfully defeated everything thrown at them until that point.
Thus confirming what everyone knows: You're safe no matter what you use unless you're stupid.

Linux was crackable, but no one wanted a Vaio badly enough.
And the VMWare hack on Vista would affect both Linux and OSX.
In the end, everyone lost.

Read the article noobs. OSX was easiest. All the OSs could have been hacked but the contestants were too lazy to do so:
-----------------------------------------------------
"The flaw [for Vista] is in something else, but the inherent nature of Java allowed us to get around the protections that Microsoft had in place," he said in an interview shortly after he claimed his prize Friday. "This could affect Linux or Mac OS X."
Some of the show's 400 attendees had found bugs in the Linux operating system, she said, but many of them didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest.
Earlier, Miller said that he chose to hack the Mac because he thought it would be easiest target. Vista hacker Macaulay didn't dispute that assertion: "I think it might be," he said.
------------------------------------------------------
They hackers themselves said the Mac was easier to hack. Read people..

mac is linux via darwin. Or atleast an opensource version of unix, if you want to split hairs. Looks like bottom line, no matter how well you plug the holes in an OS, installed programs can punch a few new ones in.

This whole contest is dumb. The MBA was hacked first because Mr. Hacker wanted an MBA. Plain and simple. Ubuntu WASN'T hacked because these guys all <3 Open Source software.
Toss a Mac Mini into the competition next year and i'm sure Vista will fall first.

@smackswell: oh, I completely agree with you. He singled out the mac. Probably since Mac doesn't get the attention that windows gets in this area. Or that Apple has had some arrogant commercials about how secure it is. This is just conjecture of course. But from what has been said here, it wasn't a mac that got hacked, it was java (being really technical). Although you could say that safari is more or less integrated into the OS, so the OS really did get hacked. But it's kind of a rationalization. I like Linux, and I'm amazed that it can survive. It really does show a sense of goodwill towards others.

I have an Amiga 3000 running in my basement -- hack that, bitches!
Just for a point of comparison:
Day 1 - Remove code execution day, and none of the laptops were hacked.
Day 2 - Hack anything that is installed in the OS by default. Only OS X was hacked (within a few minutes, apparently).
Day 3 - Third party programs could be hacked. Windows Vista was brought down quickly.
And no one managed to find a way to hack Ubuntu. Of course, day 3 was a bit unfair since there is no third party software for Linux.
(I hope I have offended everyone with this post. That was my goal.)

Honestly, I really don't quite care which was hacked first. And more importantly, it's silly to argue which OS is better.
Personally, I have used both (currently using OS X). I have seen just as many frustrating crashes and limitations with OS X as I ever have with XP or Vista. Neither OS is perfect, but it really should just come down to which you prefer to use.

@clevin: to quote myself "...mac is Linux via darwin. Or at least an open source version of Unix, if you want to split hairs." Linux is Unix, it's an open source version of Unix. Why is it Unix, because it adheres to the Unix Standard, because programs are inter-operable among different Unix like OSes.

If he wanted a certain laptop, he would have hacked the least secure to win the most. I will take a Lenovo X300 if you're giving laptops away though...
I'm glad Linux won... They deserve it the most. Apple is just getting back the bad kharma they put out.

@smackswell:
To be fair, if these guys loved Ubuntu and its open source so much why wouldn't they want to hack it and win it?
And secondly, its not about "whether macs get attacked in the real world or not." If it takes a skilled hacker a few minutes to get into all your personal data, do you think he'll really care what platform you're using? The truth of the matter is that the Mac obviously had some exploitable holes that it took barely any time for some one to figure out. Hopefully Mac, and Microsoft too, will take all the tips they can to lock down their platforms. As for Linux, you just keep doing that thing you do... whoever it is out there doing... things.

"I don't know that much about hacking, but wouldn't the Linux system be the easiest to hack into because it is open-source?"
that's actually why it's harder to hack - all the code has been randomly scrutinized by thousands of people.
BUT all of these hacks are lame in that they require the end user to perform some specific action.

Once in, I can kill your mac in 3 minutes flat. Destroy all data, make it completely unusable. I think the only reason Macs are considered secure is that there is no real challenge in hacking them so the community doesn't bother. But once someone creates a true destructive Mac virus, the Cult of Mac is in for a world of hurt.
Funny how since the mac was cracked first, the test was biased, but if the PC had been cracked first, it would have been accurate... Don't drink the Cool-Aid people, even if it does taste like apple.

Actually, when reading about this contest, the guy who hacked the MBA worked on the code for two weeks and uploaded it to a website which he then visited on the MBA in order to bring down the system. So essentially it was two weeks + two minutes to bring the MBA down.
Not a fanyboy...just sayin'.
