Intel Silverthorne Is Now Atom, Carry On
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:38 AM on March 3, 2008
Intel has decided to simplify their low-power 45nm chipsets for ultraportables with sexier, more car-like names. The technology formerly known as Silverthorne and Diamondville, from this day forward, shall be known as "Atom." And Menlow products shall be known as "Centrino Atom."
You have roughly 48 hours to hold your newly found knowledge over everyone's head in the IT department. Enjoy. [PCWorld]

@gamecrazychris: I would go with Molecule. Or if they choose to play it the other way around, Electron followed by Neutron and Proton, eventually ending with Quark. Otherwise I would say Molecule, Compound, Alloy, and then they're out.
Not really a joke, but it's a funny thing (which may be totally false): rumor is that Mendelev had fallen asleep with his face in a pile of small pieces of paper with individual letters on each of them while trying to find a way to organize atoms. When he woke up, it came to him (or he foresaw it in his dream) and he quickly arranged said letters into something close to the periodic table. The story is after he arranged everything (Alkalis, Inert Gasses etc) there was an empty spot which nothing fit in, so he just put in 'Mendelevium' which was to be filled with the next thing discovered...

@scarbrtj:
Are you actually implying that there are good periodic table jokes?

The successor to this will probably be called Atom 2 or something like that.

Silverthorne sounds like something that can kick Isaiah's butt, but I'm not so sure about a cpu named Atom

@oyumurtaci: Actually Mendeleev assorted elements by atomic weight.

@iceicemaybe: Yes but I was referring to the arrangement of the table as opposed to the sequence of the elements.
