ICQ, the Toothpaste
Posted by Jason Chen at 12:30 PM on March 16, 2008
Everyone remembers ICQ, the first widely-used instant messaging application that's all but dead in most of the world now. The Israeli software company that developed the suite before it was purchased by AOL has just partnered with a big Israeli pharmacy company called CTS to release this ICQ toothpaste, which our tipster claims will "help P2P communication (person to person) while reducing bad breath." Weird, yet really really cool. On a related note, I've got a low six-digit ICQ number. How long is yours? [Thanks Nir!]

I signed up in 1997 when I got my first computer... that was grade 9 for me.
I had a low 8 digit. I remember Win nuking people, and having weird IM's from random people. I used it up until my first year of college in 2002, until I phased it out since more people had MSN by then. No one in canada uses AIM for some reason. Maybe if they changed it to Canada Online it would have caught on.

I've got a 7-digit (1494853) that's permanently embedded into my brain. Like a lot of you, I still connect through ICQ, but only through Trillian or Digsby. I've noticed it seems to be better for sending large files than AIM or MSN, so that's what I use it for these days. It also doesn't have a character limit for messages, so I can copy-paste an entire document and send it as one message, which comes in handy.
Hey, I logged into ICQ and updated my profile there for the first time in years after reading this. I'm glad to know somehow ICQ was as an integral part of their 90s lives as it was for me...

I'm 380xxxx. I made an account for myself at work and I use it to send myself notes to my house. The fact that it's persistent even when I'm not connected is nice. My network at home goes down fairly frequently. I know other clients do that now, but they didn't when I started doing it. Of the 22 contacts on my list at work, zero are currently online. It pretty much stays that way. Poor ICQ.
