How to Make All of the Phones in Your Office Ring Simultaneously (and Get Away With It)
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:00 AM on March 18, 2008
The guys at Maximum PC have put together a hack using Skype that will allow you to make all of the phones in your office ring simultaneously—and the best part is that you will be able to keep your job when all is said and done. All you need to do in order to pull off this prank is $10 sitting in your Skype account and the time necessary to gather up phone numbers and set up a conference call. Then just start the call and watch the chaos ensue.
With April fools just around the corner, this could be a funny prank if done properly. Plus, Maximum PC is offering up 3 other variants on this trick for those looking to do something even more elaborate—and the best part is that it can be completely anonymous. When the victims glance at their caller id to find out who the asshole is, they will be frustrated to find that the caller is unknown. That means you can quietly take pride in the fact that you are that asshole—without suffering the consequences. [Maximum PC]

@--Tito--: I would love to know how it is done to route them all. Feel free to PM or leave me your email. I'm all ears. I'll even tape the insanity here when done.

@TVGenius: When I was in middle school, they used a system similar to that. It was used in a rather interesting way. Every time the school had a tornado drill, the alarm signal came from the phone system. The signal was a constant ring. Someone actually mistook it for an actual phone call once but then another person told her it was a tornado drill.

Reminds me of the time I was in our IT dept. right after we switched to Cisco IP phones. The IT director made some comment about how he could dial a certain code and 'page' all the phones at once. For some reason, in the process he actually dialed it and hit Dial. When he realized what he had done, he fired off a S-bomb and hit End Call, but unfortunately what he said had already gone out and been broadcast over every phone on the system.

You can already do this with Grandcentral. You just add all the phone numbers to your main number. Then when somebody calls your grandcentral number, all the phones ring.

@strider_mt2k: or the one with two phone-sex operators. My favorite part about that one is the Australian accents.

PLA Radio just did a show about this kind of thing. They call it "mass calling."

Reminds me of years ago at a company where I worked. We discovered we could forward the phones in a ring, so several of us in software development forwarded ours to each other. Anybody calling any of the numbers just got a busy signal. It cut down on the number of support calls a great deal. Nowdays the phone system is too smart and detects the infinite loop.

Anyone know of a way you can do this using a free service? (GrandCentral isn't allowing anymore registrations)
