Germany Titanic Doomsday Bunker Is Groovy, Surprisingly Not Full of Nazis
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:20 AM on March 21, 2008
Here's where the West German political elite was planning to spend nuclear winter, drinking Martinis and having toga parties after armageddon, waiting to see who emerged victorious from a worldwide thermonuclear war: a gigantic nuclear bunker with 17 kilometers of tunnels equipped with all kinds of commodities.
Judging from the huge subterranean structure's facilities, filled with a mixture of grey machinery and bright 60s designer decor, they planned to spend the long time after absolute destruction in style. They had it all: lounges, emergency broadcast station, laundromats, dental care and even hairdressers (for the upcoming giant rat Earth overlords, I guess.)
The US$4-billion Cold War monstrosity has just been declassified by the German government. Hopefully, they will reconvert it to a Halo 3 playground. [Der Spiegel]

@Radio_Radio: Agreed. I miss the Cold War; geopolitics were so much simpler. Unfortunately American foreign policy has been slow in catching on.
In other news - West German Nuclear Armageddon Shelter: It's a series of tubes!!!

The title should have been "Titanic Teutonic Doomsday Bunker."

@Set to evil: Eighth German. Mainly brought it up for the majority wins joke.
I don't know about Germans, but if I made large progressive reforms and one of the top ten things people associate with my country is one of the most, if not the most, evil groups in all of history, I'd be a little miffed. (Ten sentence pile-up, but I'm not fixing it.)
Of course, that is a purely hypothetical standpoint, as I am a born and raised American Mutt, so I know jack squat about my ancestors-fellow-countryman's-descendants culture. Now that I have confused you... flee!

Y'know they're gonna turn this into a tourist attraction, hotel or something.
That's what they did just South of Berlin, with an old Zeppelin hangar.
Google 'Berlin Tropical Island Resort'
It was amazing, we stopped there in 2006 on a tour through Europe.

The germans aren't too happy about their past, and appologize often for it. perhaps you shouldn't make jokes that all germans are nazis, or imply that they are.

Duly noted; engrained and deeply taken into consideration.
I just love you guys so much it might be worth it.
Ah the old adage of not being able to live with or without you (women that is).
Despite Nuts appeal as an intelligent provider, drain clogger, and probably awesome motivator, I have to say, I would still take a beautiful, sexy, curvy women any day; 10 however, I'm not so sure on. I consider myself a diplomat and a lover but 5 might be a better number.

@Out2gtcha: Do you really want to deal with 10 women? Think about how much trouble one gives you, let alone 10 and magnify that by the fact they will either all fight or worse yet, organize against you. Be careful what you wish for...

We have one of these things in Canada, The Defenbunker. Not nearly as big, but from the looks of this one, ours is much more comfortable and stylish. Its the bunker they used to film the beginning of Sum of All Fears.

@Curves: Sadly there's not nearly as much money in peace as there is in war.
As a side note these missile silo's and underground bases that keep coming up on the market would make swank places to live. This one would need some serious Debby Travis work but still.

These kinds of facilities are both fascinating and horridly morbid at the same time. War, especially nuclear warfare should be viewed as a zero-sum game - everyone benefits from not initiating one.

It would be nice if we did'nt ever need this kind of thing, but I am pretty sure the only reason its declassififed now is that they have built a bigger, better, deeper, more fashionably decorated one. The same as the US and probably every other government. Wage Peace.

Comment on Germany Titanic Doomsday Bunker Is Groovy, Surprisingly Not Full of Nazis Translation: the building was once top secret now the nuclear bunker near Bad Neuena in Reihnland-Pfalz an official museum the once 19 kilometrs long tunnel-maze was built from 1960 until 1972 it was supposed to be a hideout for the government in the case of a nuclear strike after the wall 1989 and the end of the cold war it wasn´t used anymore all that was left is an 250 meters long tunnel and an idea of an museum ( Wilbert Herschbach speaking): "there´s a rebuilt part of the tunnel for the visitors with original enteria and there´s a claustrophobic atmosphere, wich is supposed to show how it was in the tunnel back then, when it was used" (narrator again) there´s a lot to see: the technical supply and the big central (comuter room...sorry i dont know what else to put in here its like the headwuaters of the building) there are ray-protecting coats and dormrooms as well as parts of the hospital and the frightening corner of a dentist ( shows instruments) but the message of the museum is clear: (Herschbach speaking again) we can demonstrate the age of the cold war here and we hope to give the visitors the clear feeling that this may not happen again, no war may come again (narrator again) the bunker is open for the interested vistor on march 1 Machen Sie Yahoo! zu Ihrer Startseite.
