Forget About Your R18+ Rating For Games, Australia
Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:04 AM on March 7, 2008
I know we probably got your hopes up with our story the other week about the R18+ rating for games being back on the table, but it isn't going to happen. South Australian Attorney-General I was so angry when I read his argument as to why he opposes the rating over on news.com.au that I was about to write an essay dismantling every argument he had. Then I discovered that Logan over at Kotaku had already done the hard work for me. Go and check it out and spread the link to all your friends – it's an extremely well-written and logical argument for the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in Australia. And the more people we have on our side, the better the chances that we'll finally get treated like the adults that we are.

Most6 SOuth Australians, regardless of their position on R18+ ratings for games will agree that Michael Atkinson is a complete waste of space.. I'd use different language, but for not wanting to be libelous!!

No need to tone down the language, Stevothedevo, truth is an absolute defence against defamation ;)

"Why should the government decide what free-minded adults can and cannot play?" - that is what governments are there for to prevent individual and arbitrary decisions taking the place of the law. Without the law you have NO freedoms - some huge guy can smash into your house, kill you and rape your wife.
You guys are thinking "What about me?!?!"
This is just a step in trying to limit what kids are exposed to. I am not sorry to say that they are more important than an adult getting a little more gore or sex in their game.
It doesn't stop all exposure, but it does reduce it, and that is worth it.
To say that this advocates piracy is like saying speed limits advocate speeding.

I cant believe that this classification has been denied. But then again it was always going to come down to this guy.
It funny how he talked about the Parental lockout systems being easily over ridden by kids that are a lot more computer savvy then their parents. He mustn't have been thinking of this, nor the rest of the government, when they created the farce that was the internet porn filter. What was it $80M? I wish i got $80M to fail...

Raarrrr! Angry!
I don't get it. If there are R18+ rated films, why can't there be R18+ rated games? When you boil it down an equation like that, it seems pretty simple...

The whole argument is irrelevant - in Australia, the R18+ rating is RESTRICTED BY LAW, meaning that the 'kids' he's claiming to protect COULDN'T BUY THE DAMN GAMES ANYWAY...
