First Video of Hacked iPhone 2.0 In Action
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 1:00 AM on March 14, 2008
Here is our exclusive video of the iPhone with hacked 2.0 firmware, running on a T-Mobile network instead of AT&T. Despite what other reports have erroneously stated, this is not a jailbroken iPhone with firmware 2.0, but a completely hacked version of the firmware that allows you to run any app and use any compatible carrier you want in the world. As we explained yesterday, it's going to be very difficult for Apple to close this hole, almost impossible, according to iPhone Dev Team sources.
Whats new? Visible changes are:• Exchange Support
• Appstore
• Parental Controls
• SDK Support
• Calculator is more advanced
• CISCO VPN support
• Mail mass deletionFeatures not included:
• There is no spotlight icon

Why do people think it's so sort of victory to hack the iphone? Do they think apple really cares if a few people hack the hardware they already gave them hundreds of dollars for?
Apple comes by with this great new product that pushes other providers manufactures to do something cool. When was the last time people hacked a moto phone? And the the rest of then industry is trying to catch up by changing their plans. To say you owned apple? Please... If you want to do something amazing make something better then the iphone.

I hope they DO sell more because of this, and it becomes a kind of watershed or "shit or get off the pot" realization by Apple that proprietariness is, like the RIAA, all over. Reminds me of yesterday's article...

@Samifumi: with version 2.0 firmware hacked, one can install 3rd party apps which gives them access to server-side visual voicemail solutions provided by the likes of GrandCentral and about a half-dozen other companies.
There isn't yet an iPhone specific app to do this, but with a significant percentage of iPhones not being activated on AT&T, there's a sizable and growing market.
You could cobble together a proof of concept today that converts the vmail to mp3, generates an RSS feed, and delivers the voicemails to your mobile phone via your favorite RSS reader (so long as the reader supports file downloads). This might be a fun weekend builder project for MAKE.

@phantam: yes, and the iphone can do loads of things that other phones can't. I think it's more than a fair tradeoff, especially considering that many of the features you "miss" with the iphone will likely get covered in newly written apps, now that the SDK is out there.
And even for people in the US, unlocking the phone lets you travel and buy simcards wherever you go. They're cheap, and then you have a local phone on the road.

Ok, here's my perspective, since you asked.
I think the problem here is that some people think it's about the "Phone" part of iPhone that is important.
Others believe that the handheld computer part of the iPhone is what is important.
These two perspectives are correct, and mostly the discussion of the two does not overlap. This particular thread is more focused on the latter, and the people who want to talk about hacking a cool handheld computer are frustrated with the people who want to kvetch about a phone.
The people who want to kvetch about a phone are frustrated with the people who want to talk about hacking this cool handheld computer.
The choice is simple: put up with the disjoint nature of the subject matter, inherent as it is in the nature of the device; or go the filk elsewhere.

This is not directed at those whose primary language is not English, but there is clearly an adjective in there between 'any' and 'network': 'compatible'. Comprende?? Stop grousing about Verizon and Sprint. Most carriers in the rest of the world are GSM as far as I know, so 'any compatible network' pretty much does mean 'any network' except for Verizon and Sprint.

@fostina1: I'm sorry you are frustrated because you can't use an iPhone on a Verizon network. Even while it's obvious that "any" carrier means any carrier with a network compatible with the iPhone, it may not be clear for people with limited technical knowledge. That, or you are just being anal about it.
Either way, I've added the "compatible" bit so you don't feel frustrated. Cheers.

@Mdawg4624: This is unfortunately not true. Verizon's network in the US is strictly CDMA. They do however sell world phones that are GSM compatible. They have a partner agreement with Vodafone to provide service when out of the US. These phones come with a SIM card, but also have Verizon CDMA built in to them for use when on US soil. They are generally honking big and ugly Samsung phones because of this.

I use an iphone (well two really :-) in italy, unlocked since the provider that should get the iphone here doesn't really understand what an iphone should be (they seem to complain about providing an unlimited data plan.. it's Telecom Italia Mobile) we have only gsm/gprs/edge/umts networks here so, for me any network really means any ;-)
I'm pissed off about mms and especially bluetooth too, but if devs were able to program an mms client and a video recorder with and unofficial sdk, they probably will be able to do that with the official one

I believe the firmware was obtained as part of the beta iPhone SDK that Apple released to developers on 6th March. Am I the only one who is a little skeptical about this?
I mean, what did he do to prove that it really is a hacked firmware? All I saw him do was show changed .png files for calculator (I thought a scientific calculator was promised?), change the icon for iTunes Music Store, and add to a settings pane. All of those things could have been done with a Jailbroken iphone.
If he had actually opened the AppStore (that was what I saw, right?) or at least shown the version (although that can be changed on jailbroken phones as well) I would find it a little more credible.
I'm hoping whomever made this video and hacked the ipod will improve their proof of what they have done. I'm not saying that the person is not credible, or that it isn't hacked, just that I'm not entirely convinced that it really is. If anybody has any reasons that I overlooked that really prove that it is hacked, please let me know.
