Big Pussy Beats The Shit Out of a Printer in the Name of Low Ink Prices
Posted by Benny Goldman at 5:00 AM on March 29, 2008
In a new spot for Kodak EasyShare printers, Vincent "Big Pussy" Pastore takes a cheap HP out to the docks and yells at it for conning him into buying high-priced ink, before giving it a beating-and-a-half, Office Space style. After sending the printer off to sleep with the fishes, he welcomes the new EasyShare to the family. It's a shame seeing the commercialisation of all the goombahs since the Sopranos ended, but at least this one is filmed with some dignity; if I were Paulie Walnuts, I'd be looking for whoever put me up to that terrible Denny's ad and introduce their kneecaps to my baseball bat. Gene Simmons is right, "It's a Kodak World" is a much better branding campaign than just cheap printer cartridges.

I would have been more melodramatic. Say, set the printer on fire. Pulled the ink tanks out with pliers while it was duck-taped to a chair. Tied the printer inbetween a dockworkers trailer hitch and trailer...then pulled. Or...gave it a set of cement shoes.
Baseball bat is Office Space rule.

Having been an owner of one of these things that Kodak attempts to call a printer... All I have to say is that you don't get what you pay for. You don't get anywhere near what you pay for. The ink is cheap because it's 3rd rate low quality ink and ink cartridges. It sucks up ink nearly twice as fast as any HP or Canon printer does. The "new" ink you buy for it may be seen as empty by the printer, and Kodak will do nothing for you when that happens. The print quality is as low as you can get. Kodak customer service is non-existent. I dumped mine after less than 2 months of ownership and got an HP that was $50 cheaper with 3 times the speed and quality and more than twice the number of pages per ink cart. There is a reason that there is a nearly 50% return rate on these things at the Best Buy I shop at.

Great commercial, and I think most people who see it will have no idea he was part of the Sopranos cast. (I didn't.)

Apparently it's very difficult to look tough and manly while swinging a bat to ground level. I had no idea.

Kodak EasyShare 5300 copy/print/scanner = $199.99
Black ink = $9.99
Black/Colour ink = $23.99
I guess it might be a little better value, but how big is the tank ~ how many [average] pages can you print per tank?

I gotta admit, that commercial is brilliant, and says what I've been saying for years. Printer ink is said to be the most expensive substance on the planet, often costing thousands of dollars per liter.
To make things worse, they will put multiple colors in a single cartridge, forcing you to replace the entire thing when just one color runs low, wasting ink and money on the other colors.
Even printers which use separate carts for each color can be as bad, especially when the manufacturer does shit like forcing you to use composite-black instead of true black for the majority of print jobs.
It's a frickin' racket.

It's sad that puss is selling out like that. That commercial could have been a hell of a lot better.

That poor c5280.. Buy a damn 74/75 XL pack and you'll be better off.
@Geisrud: Kodak's color cartridge has all of the colors in one ginormus cartridge.
The print head is fixed to the machine...
There is no vacuum seal to prevent ink from drying on the print head.
They are over priced and most of them (except the new black toaster oven) are fugly.

Ain't nothing wrong with the commercialization of "goombahs" they need to get paid after Sopranos.

Great commercial. It's why I decided to go color laser. The crappy, slow, wet prints from inkjet printers is no comparison with what my Samsung CLP610N gives me. Besides, ink on those inkjets tend to dry up if not used frequently. It's the biggest ripoff. BTW, I think Big Pussy should've used a little more energy when hitting that printer. I mean, you all saw the major ass-kicking that the printer in Office Space took. That was classic. This beating was more like a mercy beating if anything.

Commercial itself was great, however I bought an HP Photosmart AIO for 399.99 about six months ago. Ink for it costs from 10.99 to 19.49 at Best Buy. Yep I'm getting bled dry alright I haven't had to replace the starter cartidges(six) yet, and I've printed 215 pages so far with 19 of them being high dpi photo prints. I sure got sucked in alright.
Kodak rebadges Lexmark printers which suck ink like a fat guy sucking air after running ten feet. And the cartridges cost anywhere from twenty five to fourty dollars.

@stevehp: Wow, did you just pull that out your ass? Kodak makes its own printers, and its ink is $10 for black, $15 for color. Are you seriously that dumb? Stop watching Fox news for your crap.

If ink was actually this expensive, an issue of Playboy would retail for $199 a copy. Actually the price of ink is definitive proof that there is no such thing as a free market. Printer manufacturers are the worst price fixing scum on the planet.

Disclosure - Tom from Kodak here.
Great discussion. glad Vinny was a hit (or a whack).
Nope, not a stunt double - he went to town on that in one take!
Prints come out dry as ink is pigment based, not dye based. Ink isn't 3rd rate either (Aminojaru) you do save a ton and that isn't marketing BS.
And we did make a Kodak World for Gene. ;-)
