Archos 606 is their First 3G-Equipped PMP
Posted by Jason Chen at 5:30 AM on March 13, 2008
This seems to be a France-only deal, but Archos's upcoming 606 looks like their first 3G data-equipped player to be available anywhere in the world. The player looks around the same size as the already-released 605, but is completely black, has a 30GB hard drive, and certain pricing details that are only relevant for France. In any case, if Archos can get a deal like this going in France, it bodes well for PMP fans who are looking forward to a cell-connected player to download audio and video with elsewhere in the world as well. Especially if it has support for movie/music rentals. [Archos Lounge]

DARNIT! I just ordered my 705 Wifi YESTERDAY, for crying out loud!
Oh, well, if it's based on the 604/5, the screen is smaller than I want anyway...

Please note that the picture is just a third-party mockup based on what information we have so far, not anything remotely official.
The picture doesn't even really match the description given by the PCInpact site linked in the article. While the Google translation is shaky, it seems that there will be no buttons on the front, it will be all black - even on the back, and will be the same size as a 605 but with a bigger screen.
Interesting. The 05 series just came out pretty recently, so it's kinda surprising that they'd be working on a new 06 series this soon
I don't think it is surprising that they are already working on new models... it seems they have been coming out with new models every year.
FWIW, the 05 series was announced in June of last year (9 months ago), and didn't start shipping until September (6 months ago). But this this isn't even an official announcement yet...
Archos is not likely to get the same sort of deal on cellular broadband in other countries as they do in France.
Why not just sell it as an unlocked phone? No deals necessary.

They're talking about selling it with a cellular data plan, so chances are good it's either going to use a SIM card or equivalent, or otherwise be manually set to a given cellular subscription set.

@fusiongt: I think it connects to a cell phone for connectivity, but I could be wrong.

Anyone know how the 3g works? Would you have to put a SIM card in that thing?

Interesting. The 05 series just came out pretty recently, so it's kinda surprising that they'd be working on a new 06 series this soon, and with that particular feature. Archos is not likely to get the same sort of deal on cellular broadband in other countries as they do in France.
The 605 had a touchscreen interface, and I doubt that will change. Beyond that, can't really tell how good the features really will be until there's more information.

I love Archos products. I have the AV500 (an old model by today's standards) but it still runs perfectly. It's prefect because it takes almost every video/music format and because you can record right off the tv with no hassle. I look forward to other new products Archos has to offer.

Looks nice, if only I haven't been soured on the whole 'rip a dvd to a portable player' thing by copy protection issues. I now know more then I wanted to about zero sum on a DVD.

I'm not in the need for anything 3G at the moment but I do love Archos' products. I still have and regularly use my old 404 -- much better than an equivalent ipod.
