Four more months to wait for official apps, big whoop. I don't care about AIM, I have FlickIM right now that accesses both Yahoo and AIM on the same web app, and it works just fine, thank you. I don't care about Exchange, althouth I can see that business users will enjoy it.
I want MMS, cut/paste, camera zoom, video recording, all items that could be enabled RIGHT NOW by Apple, but for some unexplained reason, they refuse to do it. And NO ONE asked them why at the post-presentation Q&A session, Unbelievable!!!

I am feeling seriously left out of all of the iPhone goodness. I may need to go steal one just so I can see why there is so much conversation about a software development kit. Either there is some amazing cool-aid being passed out somewhere that I have not had a swig of yet, or I am clueless about the life-altering technology that everyone is carrying these days.

@jnriga: LOL. Seriously, is it THAT hard to tell your friends to print out the photo and mail it to your postal address?? It doesn't change anything, aside from it's not as freakin convenient so they won't bother doing it.

@rajivgk: You're being... strange. You still are using the most advanced handset in the world, SDK apps or not. The fact that you bought 1 piece of hardware and over the last 8 months it has gotten better, and better, and better says alot. This is a PLATFORM that is evolving here, not just a few worthless apps to be used once and forgotten. Look at the bigger picture - Apple is creating an environment around the single device you bought. The SDK, frankly, with the other announcements of games, ichat, VOIP, Exchange, Push, etc... is MUCH larger and deeper than I though. I thought we'd see a few apps available, maybe a few games.
This is WAY more than that. This is moving the iphone in position to be the single most powerful device anywhere. Replacing clunky Windows and Blackberry devices with the sleek iphone on a corporate level. Opening the platform to developers and THOUSANDS of new specific apps and games.
The SDK has OpenGL, Core tools, I mean come on... really... no one thought the SDK would be THAT bad ass.

@Voyou_Charmant: I'm glad I don't use MMS. If I did I'd be feeling the same pain as all those who complain about MMS.

This is a watershed day for Apple! The release of the SDK is going to make this the hottest platform on the PLANET! As a software developer I can't wait to get my hands on this! As a software and accessory (BudCase) company, this is an exciting time be to associated with the iPhone.

Um..... MMS PLZ?
I want to send pictures of stupid shit to my friends and in return I want them to send ME pictures of stupid shit.
Why is this such a problem? Every other phone on the planet does this.

@rajivgk: just remember this. If the iPhone apps are gonna be somwhere close to the apps people are doin for Macs, you'll be happy this happened. Mac platform is full of reach, beautiful an productive apps. PC & Windows don't come close with tons of that sharware, bloatware and stuff. Mac dev community does it so much better. Don't be affraid, this won't be some cripled java stuff comming to your phone ;)

@Marty_MacFly: nitpicking. i am just making a point that its not the same old apple. talk today, store down, on your iphone in the afternoon. and recent history points to end of june pushed into july. okay, let me take a step back. this is a great announcement, but not a stock needle mover...i am being selfish here...

@ rajivgk - If you remember, they TALKED about the iPhone coming out in Jan. '07 and it didn't show up til June.
Folks need to realize what a great job Apple is doing by accommidating their customers. Most companies say, well you bought it and now we're done with you. You need to remember that Apple has SHAREHOLDERS and lots of other STAKEHOLDERS to answer to AND have to make a profit to keep them happy. Seriously, guys - it ain't personal, it's business.
Apple keeps their customers happier than any other computer company. What do you want from them, BLOOD?

i own the iphone. i am no apple fanboy (actually, i am a nike poster child), but the fact that the apps are coming to my phone by June is very annoying. i thought apple always TALKED about what was already COMPLETED (i.e. the apple store is down). You know, being different from the thousands of companies that TALK about something that IS COMING down the road in 6 months. How can giz/engadet/fanboys have it both ways - blow apple with this great news, but not care that it is coming out late, but then piss on SE for having the X1 come out in q3?
back to not unhacking my hacked iPhone...

i'm just curious how many random iphone users are out downloading the SDK as we speak not realizing you:
A) Need a mac
B) Have to install xcode
C) Have no fucking clue how to code cocoa (not saying i do but I do know me some java and c++, how far off could I be?)

The one and only thing I care about--currently the reason I'm inclined not to get an iPhone when my current contract expires--is this:
Am I going to be able to shoot video?
Since Apple doesn't give that option by default, somebody else is going to have to do it, if it's possible. Whether or not it's possible will decide whether I get the iPhone.

Its a shame man! tech bloggers seem to love everything apple do even-though this should have been done from the beginning.
Apples Marketing team are the Smartest in the world. They know exactly what their doing and their manipulation of the tech media in their favor and Gizmodo and Leo Laporte are the worst no-matter how much they tray to deny it

My only question is if you need to purchase the $20 January update before you can purchase the new update in order to get the Application Store, and therefore all the new applications, or if im just patient and I wait, will downloading the update for the Application Store give me all the features that were included in the January update? Does anyone know?

So basically I have to pay for shit I have had for free from coders since ibrikr and 1.0.2 came out...
I have apps for free like iAno and guitar and yahtzee and black jack...
And I watched that whole video and I didn't see shit that would make anyone want to update past 1.0.2 which I still run and will never update because they keep bloating out the storage on the phone with bogus shit...
I'll never upgrade my sim free 1.0.2 unless they release some pay to play poker game which they can't because US courts are cunts.

@Narual:
I agree. People never send me stuff anymore cuz they can't picture mail me. I end up missing out on funny shit that happens.
And in turn, no one wants a picture from me in an email I sent Friday night that they'll get Monday morning.

Very excited that the SDK has come out, but have any of you been to TUAW? They've come out of the Reality Distortion Field a little faster then the folks at Gizmodo.
1. It doesn't only cost $99 to publish a 3rd party app, you need to pay the $99 dollar charge if you even want to load apps your developing onto your own phone, for hardware debugging. Not a deal breaker, but this surely wasn't mentioned in the press conference.
2. 3rd party apps cannot run in the background! That's right, no multitasking for 3rd party apps on the iPhone. Now, this is getting more serious. Like how long has multitasking been around? Windows 3.11? Ok, so too many open apps will take too much from system resources. But at least give us the option to muck our own phones up, don't treat us at kids/grandmothers.
Now, I'm still very excited about the SDK's possibilities. 70% of profits minus $99 is a VERY nice incentive to code up some apps, with iTunes as a distribution system. No development infrastructure that I've ever seen produced a return like that, once all other expenses were accounted for.
...and I have to say, I've been hearing empty speculation about Apple releasing A2DP/other bluetooth profiles since release. "I think it's coming out at Mac world, with Leopard release, with the SDK,..." The next likely opportunity for A2DP to be released is this June, with the 2.0 firmware. If I don't see an augmented Bluetooth stack by then, I'm going to start looking for a new phone (Sony Xperia/N95 8GB).

If Apple is making news and history, why not report on it. I follow lots of gadget sites and if it's news, they report it. Just because Apple is making news doesn't mean they are a fan site because they reflect reality.
