Secret Stasi Files Reveal East German Army Had Porno Unit in '80s

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 11:54 PM on March 28, 2008

A secret stash of porno movies made by the East German army during the Cold War has been discovered. During the '80s, an amateur film circle was set up in a barracks in Biesdorf, East Berlin, in order to provide blau movies for the army top brass as well as visiting dignitaries. Despite the politburo's anti-pornography stance, over 100 people were involved in the films—in front of, as well as behind the camera.

Plastic Cup Gramophone Kit: Edison's Invention Reproduced

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:51 PM on March 28, 2008

Those of you amused by the Edison recording outrage will love this: a toy gramophone kit that lets you record and play back your voice from a plastic cup. Made by Gekken, a Japanese company that produces educational toys, it uses exactly the same principle as Edison's, with the neat use of a plastic cup as the audio horn. Apparently the kit's available in limited quanities, since MAKE magazine brought some back from Japan and Gekken no longer make it. But once you've seen the video of a Japanese guy singing Hey Jude into one and playing it back, you'll be wanting one.

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:39 PM on March 28, 2008

Today Apple have tweaked Aperture up to version 2.1. The biggest change is an open architecture allowing third-party plugins, hopefully adding some of the picture-editing tools Aperture had been lacking. Apple are even starting you off for free with a new "Dodge and burn" plug-in, and more are due soon. Version 2.1 is a free download.[Apple]

F-22 Raptor Airframes Falling Apart Due to Bad Glue

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:30 PM on March 28, 2008

According to a just-released Air Combat Command report, 30 of the F-22A Raptors delivered by Lockheed Martin use "inadequate adhesive" in their airframes. That means two things in plain language: bad glue; and big trouble.

Vestax Guber CM-02 USB Turntable Really Something

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 10:16 PM on March 28, 2008

Despite having crates and crates of vinyl, I am too lazy (and too strapped for space) to shell out for a USB turntable. Another reason is that most of them look like shite. But this one, the Vestax Guber CM-02, is gorgeous. Delishy-wishy. It totally poops on last week's non-usb, acrylic home-made versions (sorry Mike) and, oh, I've got a warm feeling this Friday morning and am going to think about that weekend I'll spend converting all my old 12" into files when I buy this. DJ Deals has it for IS$499, but our buds over the pond at Gizmodo Japan say it's on for US$233. [Gizmodo Japan through Google Translate]

Solar Powered Music, Fake Detection and Flashlight in One

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:09 PM on March 28, 2008

I love this weird combo, multi-tool gadget: it's a mashup between the Solar Phone Charger and the great 5-in-1 Pen. It's got a solar cell to top up your gadgets with juice (USB connector, or mobile phone adaptors), a UV note-checker, LED flashlight and, best of all, an FM radio. Why not an MP3 player? Where's the tool for getting stones out of a horse's hoof? Nope, just an FM radio. At least we have this reassurance "Security guarantee: There is not any danger to use." Yours for US$45.99. New Silicon Circuits Invented: Bendy, Stretchy, Rubbery

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:19 PM on March 28, 2008

Scientists have made a discovery that makes silicon cool again: it can now be made into bendy chips. Stiff silicon devices are powerful, of course, but not the best fit for some situations such as advanced medical sensors. Now a team University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has worked out a way to stick 1.5 micron-thick layers of silicon onto rubbery plastic in a way that actually makes it stretchable. Check out the video to see elastic integrated circuits in action.

Finger Piano the Freddie Kruger Glove for First-Graders

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 9:16 PM on March 28, 2008

Although not the most tuneful of instruments, this plastic finger piano was a freebie with a kids' magazine in Japan. I reckon it sounds like that high-pitched "weee" sound you get just before a bomb goes off in the movies. And until we can fit a baby grand into our apartment, this shinky-shonky toy will just have to do. [Geekologie]

Full Moon Sideboard, Your Gear's Own Glowing Lunar Base

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:34 PM on March 28, 2008

I'm about to move home, and this sideboard by designer Sotirios Papadopoulos is going right on my dream-about-it furniture list. "A sideboard?" you say. Well, it's simple and beautiful, in a very sciencey kind of way. The detailed luna surface is painted with a glowing paint Sotirios invented, called EcoLightInside since it's apparently eco-friendly. Why's it a dream-only item? It's a limited edition of just 24, and while the price is unknown I suspect it'll be astronomical. Shame: I'd already pictured myself dotting it with markers detailing the Apollo missions. [InventorSpot]

Iron Monger Looks Like Badass Old Italian Espresso Machine

And Virginia "Pepper" Potts looks like a trillion. Iron Monger, however, looks like a gigantabolous vintage Italian espresso machine, as you can see in this new brightly-lit and sharp beautiful shot:

Fate of R18+ Game Rating Being Decided Today

Australian Post Posted by Nathan Taylor at 1:56 PM on March 28, 2008

Rating.jpgSo the Standing Committee of Attorneys General is meeting today, and up for grabs is the long-debated adult R18+ rating for games in Australia. We’ve heard no news from the meeting yet, but my hopes aren’t high.

In spite of some pretty fierce public criticism, the South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson has maintained his opposition to the rating, and given unanimous support is required, we very much doubt that anything is going to change. Still, we’ll keep you posted as news comes out.

Update: Well, nothing conclusive came of the meeting, but it turned out rather better than I'd hoped for. The attorneys general have decided to enter a process of public consultation on the matter, and are expected to have a consultation paper ready for the next SCAG meeting (the Standing Committee meets three times a year). In its coverage of the story, the SMH notes that a 2005 study by Bond University found that 88% of the population think that there should be an R18+ rating, so it would at least seem that the odds of a public consultation leading to a positive decision are pretty good. But you can be sure, however, that some very loud conservative interest groups such as the Australian Family Association will weigh in on the matter as well.

The details on the method of public consultation have yet to be finalised.

Moody Acquario: Bathing With The Fishes

Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:00 PM on March 28, 2008

There is something about aquariums that is just plain cool—and the Moody Acquario is definitely a cool bathtub. While I can see where the designers got the idea, the logic behind the US$14,500 price tag is a little harder to fathom. I mean, the design itself is pretty basic and it doesn't look all that comfortable to sit in. Plus, you have all of those fish quietly laughing at your whale like physique or less-than-impressive manhood. [Giant.co.uk via Apartment Therapy via Born Rich]

Rumour Mill: Apple Places Order for 10 Million 3G iPhones

Posted by Nathan Taylor at 12:54 PM on March 28, 2008

iphone.jpgWe’ve suspected for some time that we won’t get the iPhone in Australia until a 3G version is released (GPRS being so five years ago here). Now there’s a rumour going around that Apple has already placed an order for 10 million of this next generation 3G iPhone with its manufacturing partners. This order has allegedly been spurred on by the unexpectedly poor sales for the GPRS iPhone in Europe.

AMD Phenom X3 Triple Core Processors Are Crippled Quad Cores in Disguise

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:30 PM on March 28, 2008

Part of AMD's multi-core Phenom blast today is the Phenom X3 8000, "the world's only triple-core x86 processor," which we heard about a few months ago. They're supposed to bargain chips for budget consumers, but they're a nicer bargain for AMD, actually, since it lets them dump bug-plagued quad-core Phenomsby disabling a core. But if performance is your top concern, you might want to steer clear of the whole Phenom batch anyway. We're still waiting for AMD's 45nm chippies, personally. [Hard OCP, Anandtech]

Comply NR-10 Earphones With Military-Grade Noise Reduction Reviewed (Verdict: Good Value)

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:50 AM on March 28, 2008

According to Hearing Components, their new Comply NR-10 Earphones can deliver more than 48 decibels of noise reduction using the same technology enjoyed by the US Army and Special Forces. They were also designed to "maximize bass response and deliver superior sound quality." At US$80, it would seem like a decent value—if they worked. Fortunately, the folks at iLounge took them for a spin and weighed the pros and cons.

The Most Depressing Watch Ever: Prepare to Be Bummed

This watch has been dubbed the "Accurate" not so much for its abilities to keep accurate time, but for its reminder about our inevitable demise. Following in the tradition of memento mori, the Accurate watch continuously alerts us to the fact that life is short and that we should strive to seize the day. TechnoCrime: How Not to Steal an iPod to Look at Naked Girls

Posted by Jason Chen at 10:50 AM on March 28, 2008

Everyone here at Giz has been a 14-year-old boy before (yes, EVERYONE), so we know how tempting it is to want to see your classmates naked. Well, stealing her iPod and then demanding that she film herself "performing a sex act" before you return it is probably the wrong way to go about it. Trust us. We tried this when we were kids, but it was a Neo Geo and camcorders were so big and heavy that she had to get her dad to hold it. The principle was the same! Don't do it!
