hi im from ireland too… the other big reason ireland got it before austrlaia is that Apples european HQ is based here and we supply all of of europe with the iphone…Id say wait for the 3g version, only another few months away…first gen phone is pretty poor infeatures redeemed only by the awesome interface.

I live in ireland let me tell you what we are all doing here.. were buying them from northen ireland (which is owned by england) and paying for them in the pound, then unlocking them.. we actualy save a small fortune and we have it on any network.. we don’t even get the visual voicemail so no problems here.. or we go one step further and take a trip to America.. flights are only €50 return for a weekend!

it is hard to believe Ireland got it first. But buying an iphone now is still a little risky, what if they delay the aus release until there is a 3G phone. Your hacked iPhone will then not be able to become a “legit” iPhone cause it wont be 3G. Thats the one thing holding me back from importing one.

All of the carriers are pushing 3G, and the cost of data is criminal..

I doubt you'll see an AU iPhone without 3G, especially on a reasonable data plan.

I COULD buy one and hack it, but I don't want to deal with all the bullshit, every time a new patch comes out I can't install it and get extra stability/functionality?

If my current phone dies, or my current iPod dies, then that's it, I'll buy one and hack it.
