Web Browse on Apple TV With Safari HD, Out Now
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 2:57 AM on February 19, 2008

If you have a burning desire to surf the internets on your TV with Apple TV and its crappy little remote, Safari HD has you covered. It's actually a native Apple TV browser coded with the WebKit rendering engine, and it supports Flash plus anything else Safari can handle. After downloading the installer, you've gotta open an SSH connection and do a minor bit of command mojo, but it's easy enough for even the nubbiest noob. And TV net browsing is pretty nubby. hmmm not a bad little hack!
$229 is pretty cheap for what you get with this thing, assuming you don't have a 360 or some other sort of media extender

With luck, Safari HD will have a more user friendly text input than Apple has imposed upon the aTV.

Search => a => p p => l => e => send. There is no need for the ,com
Just like with any phone or otherwise keyboard-less device the trick is to have the sites you frequent as bookmarks and to stay away from forums.
There is also a hack to use the USB "service port" but I don't know if it can be used with a wireless keyboard and mouse on that interface. If so, it would make things a wole lot easier.

I don't think this is something apple would include on their device- the AppleTV is a media streaming device, not WebTV... and they don't want it thought of as such I imagine

interesting workaround. seems like something apple could make more easily accessible and gain some more users.

@BWGunner: I believe there was an article on Giz about this a while ago.

@LUX you can put OSX on it?! How?
If it has a keyboard (no mouse required, just tab) and you can hit Joost, Pandora, NetFlix (when it's Mac compatible) and all the Google Apps this suddenly becomes a VERY attractive option.
Of course a 32" or 40" iMac for my living room with scads of inputs is far MORE attractive, but I'll take what I can get!

Once Netflix finally gets instant watching working for Macs, this will be incredibly useful!

I prefer installing OSX on the thing and using firefox, extensions, keyboard, mouse and all.

Well, now you can surf on TV. I'd REALLY be happy if sometime soon Microsoft, maker of the "web browser with the most market share", would think of, oh I don't know, a web browser for the 360. I kind of think maybe it will be their half-assed way of countering Playstation Home. Apple has a good idea! ;)

M$ makes one already it's called MSNTV 2. All tv based browsers are half assed anyway.
