The Awkward Japanese Robot That Can Jump Up From Flat on Its Back
This awkward robot from Japan showcases the huge leaps forward we've made in robot technology. They can jump up into a squat from lying flat on their backs now! The next huge leap forward: standing up. [TV in Japan]

@SuperMekman: You mean the current Chuck Norris ISN'T a robot?
SuppleMonkey
One step closer to the "Chuck Norris" robot!!!! The Toughest Robot Ever!
SuperMekman
@ripfire4: you asked why the japanese are so obsessed with making a bipedal robot, i sarcastically suggested it was the fault of anime.
@skulldriveshaft: in slow motion.
@Shai: the next advancement to this robot will be a sack of testicles to tea-bag its victims with.
undeadmachine
Sure, keep angering the robot. Just wait until you wake up one morning and he's squatting over you.
Shai
Is that the Drunken Monkey fighting style?
Someone, please add some Bruce Lee screaming to that video.
skulldriveshaft
I shall do the honnors:
*clears throat*
Eh em. I, for one welcome our new squatting awkward Japanese robot overlords.
Intro24
Oh this is just great. A robot can now do something else that I can't. All it needs to do is be able to please a woman and I'm really screwed.

@undeadmachine: "have you ever seen a style of japanese animation referred to as 'anime'?"
Yes. Yes I have...
...Hmm. I didn't get that.
ripfire4
...can it walk? Otherwise getting up seems a little useless.
skatanic
Don't worry about these robots coming for your head. They are limited only by the length of their chain.

god, pushing robots on their backs was the only defense we had against them. now were doomed.
ittekimasu
It looks like it is following some pre-determined algo with maybe some realtime balancing in the last step.
What I'd like to see is the robot being fed that technique as a starting point, then using genetic algos for discovering faster methods to stand.
There were some cool tricks in "Step Up 2" (I only watched the preview - but cool looking nonetheless) they could start with too.
In fact, they could use the results to choreograph new moves for "Step Up 3 - Rise of the Machines" (pun intended)

If it were actually jumping, the manuveur would be called a "kip". This one looks more like a roll. Still, quite impressive that they've gotten robots to have this much body awareness.
Atrahasis
If it needs further help standing up, mounting a compressed air cannon in the posterior would probably give it just enough lift to do the job.
And, it would be funny!
SuppleMonkey
That's exactly what I do when I'm laying down and suddenly realize that I have to poop.
Gann
all this technology and we teach robots to brakedance..... bring on the electric boogaloo!
BigViper
Didn't that 'Elmo' toy do this last year?
Mrrix32
Wow. Glad I watched this. That was some extremely valuable information, I may not have been able to live without. Next...
imsochris
On second thought, I hope to hell it just dozes off it you rub it's tummy.
ANoel
My vote goes to "creepy"
It is impressive however the balance and engineering that must have taken.
naokigraphics
"Sarah Konna?"
Noobs-R-Us
@IKEACAR: haha was thinking that myself
@ripfire4: have you ever seen a style of japanese animation referred to as 'anime'?
im impressed personally. it was like a year ago when we were here laughing at asimo falling over on stage during a demo. now they have a robot that is very close to leaping to its feet. that is definitely a noteworthy advancement. cant wait to watch robots fighting it out for our amusement on tv, followed by the news, welcoming our new overlords...
undeadmachine
Very thoughtful to place the mat - wouldn't want the bot to get hurt
PeterPotamus
Thats exactly how i get out of bed!
o0adam0o
didn't happen unless you get a min+ video of this thing from every possible angle.. doing the same thing.. over and over..
oh wait.. nvm..
SeventhExile
Ok, so like.. 5 years before we have robots like the movie "I, robot"? I think will smith needs to start training now.
toyotaboy
@Ghede:
Is it like "Ragdoll MAsters"????
nutbastard
awkward?
ashwinmudigonda
What? No Chinese get up?
Seriously though, why are the Japanese trying so hard to make robots biped?
ripfire4
I wonder how many people, beside me, are rolling around on the floor trying to get up like the robot. Just in case you haven't tried it yet, it's not easy. It's not really hard either. The hardest part is if you try to stay in the squatted position like the robot and not stand up.
baltwade
Shit, there goes "Plan B: Push robots over". Now I'm going to have to come up with something else in the vent of a robot uprising.
Sockatume
@jetexas: please tell me they are on their first lesson, otherwise thats just pathetic. Even a very non athletic person should be able to do this no problem.
citizen024
Anyone ever play Toribash? No?
It is a simultaneous-turn-based combat simulator between two ragdolls with controllable joints. The objective is to massacre your opponent. The movement patterns are eerily like those of that robot.
We need to get another one of those robots and have em fight.
Ghede
More like "Roll" up from its back.
gizmodohomepage
That will be great for after it falls down the stairs.
Marty200
Eerily human
crap-action-jackson
That is the PERFECT way of getting up.....if you're on a snowboard. Especially without using your arms, which are already blown out from catching yourself falling on the jumps. I can't believe I just learned how to get up from a robot...
impliedsurprise
How come it took Bender an entire episode to figure this out?
Darrone
That was interesting. I just wish they had shown it from a couple different angles a few more times.
IKEACAR
That just seems like a weird way of getting up.
baltwade
Now quick! Jump up and do a round-house kick!
N@tedog
The robot does it better than some of the guys in my jujitsu class.
jetexas
LOL! Looks like a gymnastics event in the 'Drunk Olympics'
ferment78
That robot is doing something I can't, and I don't like being one upped by a robot.
gadgetfanatic
can i start singing the terminator theme song NOW?!?! c'mon people!!!!!
astrograph
Allllleeyooop! Wait....wait OK I got it........argh my back!
Kaiser-Machead
with a few more movement software mods and the addition of a vocoder voice synthesizer, it'd be the perfect breakdancing machine
jahknow
Looks like it was straining itself at the last minute to keep balance.
I was waiting for a robot fart at the last minute, but I guess there was no sound...
What would robots fart anyway...? H2O vapor form the fuel cells?

@Sockatume:
That was quite possibly the funniest comment I have ever read on any message board. I don't use Internet chat acronyms, but in this case I actually did LMAO.
mikeness
But try putting a sword in it's hand. I bet the weight difference is enough to throw everything it knows about getting up off and it will end up stabbing itself or it's operators!
ddrager
it seems they forgot this is a robot, and doesnt need to conform to human movement…WHY
Accordion
@Sockatume: Lol, I was just coming here to post that!
FLegion
This looked scary real!!!
Biggy
Creepy...very creepy.
Discofunk
@crap-action-jackson:
Can we say rise of the machines.. ****a thank you very much****. (had to throw a terminator something in the comment)
Boots_Mcoy
They can stand up on their own now. We're doomed! Doooomed!
Klappstuhl
I guess I'm the only one awestruck by that demonstration. I was under the impression that balance and especially standing up from a prone position is one of the more difficult aspects of robotics.
Jamo
Next huge leap forward: kill operator and assimilate head. (Sorry, watching too much Sarah O'Conner Chronicles)
stsaiga
All this has to do is move a bit faster, and it will be able to go from a flat back, to standing on his feet.
Freaky.
dragonphyre
@citizen024: Some of the new guys have a little bit of what you'd call a "weight problem."
... but at least they're doing something active
jetexas
@citizen024:
I agree.
If the robot threw his arms after his legs he might even be able to land standing.
ANoel
Wait a second ... after all those articles I've seen about sex with robots, I thought we were trying to KEEP them on their backs!!!
jetexas
This word jump you use, I don't think it means what you think it means.
ColonelDebugger
Breakdancing robot in a few months!
