Star Trek Communicator Replica Coming Soon, Sadly Doesn't Communicate
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 3:36 AM on February 12, 2008
This "life-size" Star Trek Communicator is a dream for every budding Kirk out there, sounding like the real thing when you flip it open, and with nine different voice phrases from the TV series built in. So okay, you can't actually contact anyone with it, but who needs that when you can pretend with "Spock here, Captain" or speak to the Enterprise with "Bridge, this is the captain?" Just don't be wearing a red suit. Available in March for $US29.99 [Geek Alerts]

Man that would be a sweet enclosure for a project.
How about putting the guts of a bluetooth headset into one of these?

Hmm... This is a re-release, I think. My nerd brother has one of these, got some weight to it, with the chirping and the lights and the voices and the hoy-hayvn.

a better idea than putting a phone in this (since you'd have to cut something somewhere to allow for keypad / power / etc) ... is put a bluetooth headset/speaker in this. could probably keep the sounds it already makes as well. just got to figure how to make the "beep-beep" happen on a call... and the "chirp" happen on opening (along with making the opening action connect the headset).
MAKE... i'm looking in your general direction. make it so.

I'd really like to see a cell phone built into one of these.

@permissionmag:
No you're not. They've been around for a while. The Master Replicas one was pricey but I'll buy one for $30.
/not allergic to vagina either.

This is the most beautiful thing (that can not perform oral sex) I have ever seen. I will personally crotch punch anyone who says otherwise. Please include your home address and work hours with your dissenting post.

You might as well wear a shirt that says "I'm allergic to vagina" if you buy that or use it in public.

@ctthoqqua: Ok, so I'm not crazy. I was sure I'd seen these around over a year ago.

Put a cell phone in it, and have the keys on the outside be able to scroll, select, answer, etc. Then add the ability to clamshell, so if you need to actually dial, you can.

I am all for shiney gadgets, but this really needs some form of usefulness. I suggest a built in tazer so you can at least fight back when they come at you with the straight jacket.

Pshh. I had a TNG communicator that made all the right sounds back in the 90's. And everyone knows TNG was better than TOS.

I had Star Trek walkie-talkies when I was a little kid in the late '70s. They flipped up just like this and had the same buttons, but they were of course plastic, and this weird slate blue color, and of course they worked about as well as toy walkie-talkies ever do. But they were still cool!

What I love is the fact we now have real phones that are smaller and more advanced than a Star Trek Communicator. Well, if you don't count the planet to orbiting spaceship calls. Oh wait, we do have satellite phones. Guess we need get cracking on the spaceships rather than the phone tech.

I've had one of these for years already. Mine looks to be a little better quality than the above picture, however mine does not have any pre-programmed voices. Instead I can record my own voice, and play it back. Also I assume that Paramount must have thought only nerds would buy the item back when I got mine, because it has a built in calculator underneath a barely noticeable inner panel. While I love Star Trek I could have done without the calculator.
