Death Star Hotel in Azerbaijan Is No Moon
This 521-foot-high hotel is coming to Baku, Azerbaijan, either to host a bunch of Imperial forces or obliterate the local population with a giant death ray. They call it "Full Moon" but they are not fooling us: this is a fully armed, fully operational battle station. And it shall be destroyed before it's too late, with a bunch of small fighters that can escape its turbolasers and drop proton torpedoes down an exhaust port. Or maybe not, if you look at it from its side.

Yes, I know, even with 104,182 square metres, with 382 rooms over 35 floors, it's a complete letdown. Jeff Vader won't be happy with this pancaked Death Star at all. [Skyscraper News via Star Wars Blog]

Hi I was born in Baku Azerbaijan but I live in Sweden right now. this project is really touched me you know? country like Azerbaijan can make this kind of project? No way!!! If this project comes true I move back directly to my town. I*m very proud of it! Dubai is no longer best! Azerbaijan 4Ever!
Those are without a doubt the cheesiest architectural illustrations I have ever seen.
Look at those twinkles in the first picture. God!
Clearly the webcam-inspired one is grunting over to the other monstosity across the, as was pointed out by @ovil200: brown lagoon.

Eh... sounds like Azerbaijan is somewhat confused about its identity (and budget).

Wow, that will take a lot of independent aluminum siding contractors.
klaybc
They should hire Chad Vader to run the place.
Razta
needs more sparkles and lens flares and plastic shiny rendering for full effect yeah thats it -the guy drawing this gaudy thing
Hypenotist
The hole is there for terrorist airplanes to fly through...
borgseawolf
I think the sheriff of Rock Ridge's idea was brilliant. They'll save the *real* death star from those douchebags.
Unless, of course, they bring a shitload of dimes.
godospoons
Azerbaijan, it's nice their getting something, they have a hell of a time.
Like the meek in The life of Brian.
Sorry, the jokes are coming to me in droves.

Dubai, the ball is now in your court.

@92BuickLeSabre: Ok, i must admit, THAT was funny.

@ferment78: Funny we are!

I wonder if the building would have been a more impressive structure should they remove the awkward hole in the building. Unless it serves a particular function beyond its design, I think it looks too forced.
I do think the architects were trying to mimic the crescent shape, a symbol of Islam, the religion of 96% of Azerbaijan's population.

IN the 2nd picture, you can see the Hotel/Death Star lining up to destroy the Rebel Base across the bay....

So very very cool! I really love these kinds of projects. Trump made a very cool tower shaped kind of like a sail on a sail boat. I wish I was filthy freakin' rich and could live in the penthouse of one of these things with my x360, PS3, brand new gaming rig that costs 10,000$, and 99 virgin concubines who feed me grapes but don't use their hands to do so.
banmojo
It's so shiny.

You Star Wars Geeks are not funny. Anyway it looks more like a duck from the front, and you say Azerbaijan, but that second photo is actually Waikiki if you can look past 'the pancake.'
ferment78
World-weary travelers can't handle room service of that magnitude!
(yeah....stuff practically writes itself)

Having a friend that used to live in Baku for many years, I ASSURE you the water is not that blue.
It's actually a nasty brown, due to an oil spill they had many years back.
ovil200
I wish there were more buildings with such futuristic look everywhere on the planet.
This is what the future should look like everywhere. Not just plain sticks for skyscrapers in a downtown area.
aec007
This hotel is now the ultimate power in the universe. I suggest we use it.
I could go all day.
N@tedog
Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of Big Oil.
N@tedog
Azerbaijan is too remote to make an effective demonstration -

The wealth of the world continues its shift towards the Eastern Hemisphere.

Emperor: "Um...Where's the superlaser? Seriously. Where is the SUPERLASER? What do you mean what am I talking about? See that gigantic hole? SEE IT?!?! Did you think it was supposed to be like that? NO! Something goes there. What goes there? Are you really asking me WHAT goes there? A G**D***** SUPER LASER GOES THERE!"
92BuickLeSabre
I just hope they've protected their exhaust ports from small fighters...
ideaman2020
This was a problem on the death star as well. They didn't have enough windows for all the higher ups. I'm glad they solved the problem.
rurena
Wow! It's a coined-shaped Death Star!
Palestina
It's too big to be a space station.
SchruteBuck
the chances of small fighters finding an exhaust port and blowing up that hotel are a "million to one".
naokigraphics
Yeah, Dubai needs to build an Admiral Akbar cruiser hotel to launch an attack on this thing.
redman042
Incoming giant Calamari-cruiser-esque hotel?
avconsumer
It won't be flat once it is inflated.

I was born in baku, and visited twice since then, and frankly i'm shocked that this is coming there. there is a HUGE wealth distribution gap in that nation/city. sure there are marble lined parks in front of skyscraper banks, but a few blocks away are decaying projects and bathrooms without running water or toilets, with a mcdonald's thrown in there just for fun.
ch3m1st
The first pic looks like a giant retarded bluebird with gigantism. Other than that, this is actually rather wicked. It seems that all of those crazy architectural backdrops that we see in science fiction movies are coming true, a little at a time.
Kaiser-Machead
I wonder how long it will take for someone named 'L. Skywalker' to check in? ;)

it would be pretty difficult to float the millenium falcon through those narrow dimensions.

damn... That's just gorgeous. It's awesome lookin'

Looks more like epcot to me actually...

I wish we had billions of petrol dollars funneling into our country so we could build luxurious monstrosities such as this.
Oneon1isto
<MichaelBay>Awesome hotel!!</MichaelBay> Though from a design standpoint, I really don't get the wavy-fluid-bubble like architecture trend (I'm talking about the building below it). It just looks so tacky, like something out of the 50s.
pcdsim
America blows. We get no awesome cool designs. For being the most capitalistic country (maybe I'm wrong) we sure have sucky ass architecture. Nothing new and refreshing.
slingblade
Before your execution I would like you to be my guest at a ceremony that will make this hotel operational. No resort chain will dare oppose the Emperor now.
superbad
That first photo looks like a hand of a person holding a platter of death star and a can of coke.
contempt
Beautiful. A very beautiful looking building.
Szin
where is excactly is that place? is it in asia? europe?
Amiash
Shiny! Pretty! I'd actually like to visit this when I get around to touring the Middle East.

@utube2007:
"perfect design for the new at&t"
Yup. Just needs a bit of blowing up, is all.
ANoel
The USA soo needs something like that so we can continue to trick people into thinking this country is actually being productive :)

I think the inside of the void/circle/hole should be lined with glass as well.

you mean i can go to the darkside, but i don't have to stay on the darkside?

I served on the death star, and that thing looks TOTALLY different when you are that close.

@Razta: And Mr. Izzard to have a performing residency there. Which would probably create some sort of time/space/comedy disruption.
deusdiabolus
@ch3m1st: Yeah. I was there three years ago, and based on the poverty I saw then, I can't believe this project will actually reach completion. If it does, though ... is it possible for the Armenians to feel even lower about their lots in life?
anumberofnames
If they do a giant monster cookie, where are the chocolate chips of death?

@Razta: Wasn't Chad Vader executed in Florida (by hanging) in 2000?

i look forward to see the ice melt down and the ocean take this monuments to become nice scuba diving spots...

What about that Centauri Cruiser-lookin' building in the BG of the 3rd pic?
Even if it's not partially based on Vorlon tech, it'll still slice you in half without a 2nd thought.
AdmNaismith
I live in Baku and I am an architect..........this.........it's a nonsensical collection of objects, thoughtless, souless, meaningless; if "less is more" this certainly has plenty of the less!
Of course it does say things about the nation, but I am not sure that they are good things.
Glavniteme
"Besides, stayin' in that hotel ain't my idea of courage...it's more like...suicide".
