LEGO Indiana Jones Set Collection Whips Us Into a Frenzy
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:06 PM on January 4, 2008
Just when I was looking for the completion of the LEGO Millennium Falcon, I got sidetracked by another Harrison Ford minifig, this time with a fedora and a whip: these LEGO Indiana Jones sets are not as massive as the 5,195 pieces of the Falcon, but all together they are begging for some silly playing and block whipping. The four sets cover all the (good) movies:
There are five models, from Raiders and Last Crusade, each with their own charm:
• The Indiana Jones and the Lost Tomb set shows the Well of Souls complete with the Ark of the Covenant. Sadly, there's no Marion or Sallah or snakes. Asps. Very dangerous. You go first. For $US19.99 you can't ask for more.
• Race for the Stolen Treasure includes the car and truck from Raider's road chase. Also a low price, and not a lot of complexity: $US29.99.
• Temple Escape is the best one of the lot and sightly more complex. $US59.99 to reproduce the gold idol temple from the beginning of Raiders, even with a mini-Alfred Molina.
We can't wait for the fourth part to arrive in May. And the fifth one (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Millennium Falcons, by yours truly.) [LEGO]

Looking at image 7, that gun holster seems to have been painted on in an unfortunate position.

Hi JP, I have bought from http://cheekyjunior.com.au before. They have the Indiana Jones Lego you've mentioned. Check out their prices, probably the lowest on the internet.

Gawker should really open a new blog channel dedicated only to toys of all kinds. That would be cool.

See Striders 3rd comment and link. Also, it technically wasn't fantasy. Although it neither made it into production nor service, it was an actual prototype from Blohm & Voss called the BV-38.
Black Sun models makes an all resin 1/72 scale model of it:

Harrison Ford is _not_ the only actor to be made into a minifig twice. Aside from Alfred Molina (as BloggyMcBlogBlog pointed out) and the plethora of costume changes (for pretty much every main SW character _except_ Leia and Amidala, the latter of which still hasn't shown up in the outfit she was wearing in the original LEGO Episode I logo), there's a valid argument that Temura Morrison holds the claim for the greatest number of minifigs, given that he has played Jango Fett, pretty much every Clonetrooper, and redubbed Boba Fett's lines for the DVDs. Given the sheer number of minor characters that have been given minifigs in the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, and Spiderman lines (and the remote possibility that any of those characters were played by any of the NBA players or Ferrari race drivers that got their own minifigs), there's a lot more possibility for multi-minifig actors than I'd care to research (I'm not counting the Batman line because all of the minifigs in that property are archtypical, rather than being based on any specific movie/series, but if you allowed a rather large stretch you'd have to consider that the Joker minifig could be based on Mark Hammil's B:TAS portrayal, which given the hairstyle isn't a great stretch of the imagination when compared to that of the current anime-style series).
As to the Temple Escape set, the great thing is that they managed to include _EVERY_ booby trap in the model, including three that weren't notated in the article photo (the stone door, the pit, and the collapsing altar). Oh, and there's a snake to put in the front seat of the plane. The Well of Souls set actually comes with _10_ snakes (five red, five green) and an overhead dumper to drop them from, but no Sallah (no monkey either). The truck chase set is _very_ complex, even though it only features two vehicles, a horse, and three minifigs (the fenders alone are more complex than most LEGO cars). Ironically, the back of the truck holds a gold chest full of jewels and coins instead of the excellent Ark from the WoS or, more appropriately, a crate. Oh, and all four classic sets have shown up in both Toys "R" Us stores (expect a hefty mark-up) and Target locally, so they're all out in the wild.
Now, pics have already surfaced for the new Crystal Skull sets (this is by no means the only current source, but it does have pretty much every LEGO IJ photo that has been released to date):
For the Batman sets, the set names have been broken, but no photos have shown up as yet. One of my biggest gripes has been fixed, which is that while I've been able to make 100% LEGO custom minifigs of many supporting characters that aren't included in the official series (currently including Batgirl, Clayface, Firefly, Manbat, Mad Hatter, Red Hood, and Black Mask), I have not come across a happy solution for one of my favorite Bat-villains: Harley Quinn. The set names are for 2008 are:
7884 Batman's Buggy: The Escape of Mr. Freeze
7885 Robin's Scuba Jet: Attack of The Penguin
7886 The Batcycle: Harley Quinn's Hammer Truck
7888 The Tumbler: Joker's Ice Cream Surprise
Clearly #7886 will introduce Quinn in LEGO form (which means she should be included in the upcoming LEGO Batman video game), and #7888 will finally take advantage of an odd gap in their use of the license, which is the utter lack of current sets based on the new Batman movies. They're supposed to have the right to draw from the comics, and any current movies or TV series, but the closest they seem to have come to stepping outside the comic books is the Batmobile set, which looks vaguely inspired on the Burton-mobile, and includes a version of Batman that looks directly based on the Keaton costume.
@THE DUDE:
That's the Hovito temple from Raiders, not the Temple of Doom.

If LEGO included SS minifigures, they would have been unable to sell the sets in Germany.

Since Doc-Ock was a minifig, doesn't that make Alfred Molina the second actor to have two minifigs based on him?

@dofermento: Yup. That was in the movie also. Hard too see, but it was one of those things Lucas does. Just like the R2-D2 head on the top of the pole in the ark opening scene. Also, did you notice the 2001 A Space Odysee pod in Episode 4 of Star Wars?

That's a SeaPlane. A HydroPlane is a racing boat that planes on top of, or just above the water. A HydroFoil has a water wing. A SeaPlane is an aircraft that has landing gear that floats on the water.

Actually I bought the Temple Escape set at Toys R Us before Christmas so it is certainly out before February 2008. shop.lego.com says it is just back ordered until Jan 18th right now.
And yes, I have built it and it is excellent.
Not as cool as my Falcon though...

The Lost Tomb set does indeed have snakes. In fact, there's a little lever in the back of the set that drops the snakes from above onto the minifigs below.
I'm also impressed with how accurately the Prof. Henry Jones minifig resembles Sean Connery.
