CES on the East Coast in the middle of winter? I doubt it. More likely Orlando will win this one if it leaves Vega$.

@werk: Hey Werk, Are you in New Orleans?! I recognize that K&B beer Can anywhere! Yes New Orleans would be awesome, even somewhere else in the East Coast, nothing wrong with the West Coast though, hard to beat Las Vegas legal hookers! Hey GIZ that starship soldier girl operates out of Las Vegas, go for it!

Doesn't really surprise me. Vegas isn't the bargain it used to be. There are good deals to be found, but the hotels around the Sands convention center are not cheap. When I was at a convention there my room was $250 a night.
As for the attendees "working" for 8 hours a day and not gambling, big deal. It's Vegas. All the fun stuff takes place after dark anyways.

The big money in Vegas will make the necessary concessions to see that shows like CES stay put.
A little posturing ahead of contract negotiations never hurt anyone and CES is playing it smart.

By 2011 there should be mutiple new hotels (including an MGM Grand) in Atlantic City.

Cab fares in Vegas are regulated. Other than times of mass chaos (New Years), you should be able to take your cab receipt and file a complaint. Cab companies protect their licenses fiercely in Vegas.
Or, if all that mailing and complaining is not worth it (which is probably why $30/mile is doable for them) you can always take the free monorail system that runs nearly the entire Strip.

Quit ya bitchin' CES attendees, it's Vegas for god sakes not some podunk motel infested city where the rates are by the hour!
The hookers are hotter there anyways.

Yeah, cause there's another city that could handle this show cheaper and better. Leaving Vegas would either kill attendance and put them in a position to come groveling back in 5 years or kill the show entirely.
Of course casinos charge more during trade shows: it creates a supply/demand situation, just like New Years and just about any three day weekend. Also, people who come to trade shows are spending at least 8 hours a day at the convention center working and not gambling.
Hotel rooms at casinos are relatively cheap when compared to other cities, and usually nicer too. What would someone be paying for a shitty room in Chicago/NYC/Philly, etc during a 100,000+ attendance convention.
Bottom line, it's political move on the part of CES to make it look like they're on the side of the exhibitors they themselves are gouging for convention rates in the first place.

Sweet. I'm done going as well. $30 cab rides to go a mile down the strip made me nauseous. The city is manned by the countries lowest common denominators.

@fusedinertia:
I'm in NYC, but NOLA born and bred.
As far as East Coast goes, I'd say NOLA, Orlando, Miami...nothing up here though, like Brendan said, too cold (although you'd never guess it today, 65F in January, WTF)

Indeed. Why not Denver? They've been doing a pretty good job of luring mid-size shows out of Las Vegas of late.
I'm not sure it's up to something the size of CES, but I'd really like to see other shows such as Networld+Interop relocate out here...

Bring it out here to LA. Don't do New York; accommodations there are expensive and hard to come by even when there's not a major event.

I guess you're all to young to remember when the OTHER CES, the summer one, was held in Chicago every year. Chicago Tribune says there's talk of bringing it back here, but our scary trade unions and even scarier prices will probably make that a non-starter.

Orlando has plenty of room. Our convention center is about the same size as the LVCC (and there's a lot of other places nearby to put the spinoff shows and company-specific productions). There's over 110,000 hotel rooms in the area, with more being built as we speak.
It's WAY cheaper to do shows here, too, compared to LVCC.

I don't know where they could go that would be any better. It's the world's largest trade show, and fills the whole LVCC, plus a lot of other convention and meeting space around Las Vegas. The 2nd largest show in the world, NAB, only fills the LVCC. I've seen the rates for the smaller NAB show in New York, and the hotels are usually $300/night minimum, whereas for NAB in Vegas I can get into the Sahara for five nights for under $500. I'm with you on the food there, though. a burger and a Coke shouldn't be $10. The food there is as bad as any elementary school cafeteria, and they flat out screw you on the prices.
I just don't see where they could try to hold something like that, since I don't know of anywhere that has the hotel space you need. Sure, you could do it in NYC or LA probably, but they don't have hotels the size of those in Vegas, so you'd have attendees spread over a 200 square mile area filling every Hampton Inn and Super 8 in sight, and getting gouged since I doubt they'd be able to negotiate convention rates for 600 hotels.

CES attendees are the butt of numerous jokes with the local workers. They are known as the worst tippers of any convention goers the city sees.

The problem with Las Vegas is the new non-themed hotels. All the new hotels are after is the $$$. They only care about the big spenders. That'll be the downfall of Las Vegas.
The older casino's, even when they were new back in the day, catered to everyone. Stuff was cheap. All the old casino's cared about was gambling. That's how they made their money. Now they want to have their cake and eat it too.
20 years from now, Las Vegas is gonna be a different place, for the worse.

@nosauten:
No, the problem is that these days, you can gamble pretty much anywhere (and more importantly, the foreign high-rollers are going to places like Maccau and Dubai rather than having to deal with U.S. Customs and Immigration to get to Vegas.
Consequently, the, er, "resort" operators have to pick a different customer base, notably the "Celeberties Behaving Badly" crowd and their admirers...

BREAKING!! CES 2011 IN CHICAGO!!
"They fought hard, and they got CES back. Chicago has been fighting to host many big conventions to get feedback about the lakefront city which has been the determining factor for their 2016 Olympic bid. They are working with United States Olympic officials on a day to day basis trying to make a Chicago seem like the best place. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the biggest convention for different sorts of technology and electronics, and it will be happy to host again in Chicago, and try to help them further their hard work on making Chicago the best city for the Olympics in 2016!"

They ought to bring here to Texas, put it in the Metroplex (Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington). Hotels are everywhere, we have room to spread, the weather in winter is still relatively warm, and it's in the middle of the country so nobody would have to go plum across the United States.
