iRiver SPINN PMP Uses "Warm Analogue Controls" Whatever That Means
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 4:00 PM on January 7, 2008
The Goods The flash-based SPINN PMP uses iRiver's eponymous SPINN UI, which "combines warmth of analog controls" with digital content—apparently this means a wheel of some sort. It's stacked PMP-wise, otherwise: 3.2-inch 480x272 screen, FM tuner, flash, Bluetooth, dictionary and 30fps MP4 playback. The shell and UI are also really attractive for a PMP of this flavor, which are usually barely less ugly than glossy roadkill. The Catch: Um, are "analog controls" really a feature?

It looks like maybe the thing on the right is a hinge, and the whole pane may swivel around. Though... it wouldn't make much sense from an interaction perspective, so I must be missing something.

If I'm looking at that right, does the silver piece on the right spin to allow you to well, spin through your music and other controls?

Gotta love iRiver's designs. They've come a long way from the iFP-180T that I first owned. Very click.

They probably mean the controls will feel more fluid and analog like. Not clickity click and on/off like digital controls.

Pure sex.
Well thought-out analogue controls are always welcome, especially after hauling the Touch in and out of my pocket for a few months.

@dnl2ba: Definitely looks like a hinge. I assume it is to close up the device and protect the screen when not in use.

"Are "analog controls" really a feature?"
Depends on how "warm" they are...

And when will this be available to us consumers??
There's nothing about it on the Iriver web site or anywhere else as far as I can tell :(

Maybe it has something to with how you press and control stuff on the screen. You ever notice that you can't press the eject button on your ps3 when you have a glove on or a cloth or something over your hand.
