iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware Update is Official
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:27 AM on January 16, 2008
The iPhone got its expected firmware upgrade, delivering version 1.1.3 that we've seen and debated about before. It delivers new features like the ability to send SMS messages to multiple recipients at once, faux-GPS on Google Maps via triangulation, Google Maps showing the hybrid map view, drag and drop icons on the home screen and bookmarks on the home screen (i.e. Webclips). There are also some new features, such as videos with chapters, the ability to display lyrics on music. Check out some screenshots below and hit the jump for the official press release.
Apple Enhances Revolutionary iPhone With Software UpdateMACWORLD SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today announced a free software update for its revolutionary iPhone(TM) that allows users to automatically find their location using the redesigned Maps application*; text message multiple people in one message; create Web Clips for their favorite websites; customize their home screen; and watch movies rented from the new iTunes(R) Movie Rentals right on their iPhone. With its revolutionary multi-touch user interface and pioneering software, users can
easily add significant new features to their iPhone through software updates whenever an update becomes available. New iPhone products shipping from the factory will include the software update and existing iPhone customers will automatically get the update for free when they sync their iPhone with iTunes (http://www.itunes.com)."iPhone doesn't stand still -- we're making it better and better all the time," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We've delighted millions of users with this revolutionary and magical product and it's great to share these improvements with them."
Maps, one of the most popular and helpful applications on iPhone, has a new interface that is simpler and easier to use and adds incredible new features such as the ability to find your location automatically. With just the tap of a button, iPhone can now triangulate your position using nearby Wi-Fi base stations or cellular towers. You can use this as a starting or ending point for directions or to find local points of interest. The new hybrid map view combines map view and satellite view so you can see major street names overlaid on satellite imagery.
Users can now create Web Clips -- icons on the home screen that take you directly to your favorite websites, including to the exact spot you have zoomed into. Web Clips are a great way to easily track websites that you frequently check such as news, blogs, sports sites and movie listings. In addition, users can now customize their home screen by repositioning any of the icons, and even create up to nine different home screens that they can easily flick between.iPhone's new software update also adds the ability to send the same SMS text message to multiple people, and iPhone saves a history of your text messages, so with one tap you can send a new message to the same group.
With Apple's new iTunes Movie Rentals, movie fans can rent movies on their computer, easily and quickly transfer them to their iPhone, and watch them anywhere on iPhone's gorgeous 3.5 inch screen. Users can also now navigate forward or backward through their movies by chapters, select alternate language tracks and view subtitles, if available.
Pricing & Availability
The iPhone software update 1.1.3 is available immediately for free via iTunes 7.5 or later for all existing iPhone customers in the US, UK, Germany and France. New iPhone products shipping from the factory will include the software update and existing iPhone customers will automatically get the update for free when they sync their iPhone with iTunes (http://www.itunes.com). iTunes Movie Rentals are available in the US only.Further information for iPhone can be found at http://www.apple.com/iphone.
*Availability and precision of Maps positioning features will vary depending on actual location.

You do NOT need the newest version of itunes. Feel free to download it, but the update worked for me on v7.5
I have posted another screen shot.
The button wiggle is odd.
The bookmark to home screen is awesome - it even makes a custom icon from each page.
The map location seems way off, but there are other added map controls literally under the page (click the eye for it to fold up).

if you upgrade on a factory 1.1.2 phone, then restore, does anyone know if it will go back to 1.1.2 or stay at 1.1.3?

In order, One needs to download the latest iTunes (for the moment isn't an update but a web down load), then one needs to install the newest QuickTime (7.4) which is available as an update once you have the newest iTunes, then iTunes will be able to download and install 1.1.3.
Nice- like running MicroSoft updates.

@BANDIT:
Good point, or should I say points. I do agree with you in the fact that apple seems to have way too many people focusing on the media side of the iPhone and forgetting that its called the iPHONE for a reason...Cause its a cell phone, first and foremost.
Well at least it should be. But as we keep seeing with each and every update. Almost all the cell phone esque features are being ignored.
But since I don't care for most of the features you complain about...I am happy. But that's just me, like I said, I can totally see your point.

Duh. Firmware updates to iPhone kill Jailbreaks and unlcoks. Always have and always will. Just wait for the 1.1.3 jailbreak and AnySim already. (Really, only idiots update their "hacked" iPhone and complain when they lose all the Jailbreaks and it becomes locked again. They also don't bother reading all the warnings about it...)
However, this potentially unlocks the 1.1.2 phones, which couldn't be AnySIM'd. You could jailbreak them, but not unlock them.

No improvements to the PHONE features? Like fixing the lack of an audible VM/missed call reminder? Or the lack of vibrate-then-ring? Or the lack of respectable non-cricket, non-pop-music ringtones? Or the inability to receive MMS text messages with pictures? So I lack features that even the most basic cell phones have had for years, but I'm blessed to be able to watch movies on it and to follow along with song lyrics? This product is becoming more like an iPod and less like a telephone with each "update." Very disappointed.

So, these are good features? No iphone sdk, so what's the point of dragging and dropping icons? There aren't many apps on the device as it is. Also, when the hell are we getting A2DP support? I'm a little disappointed, I think these are nice "low hanging" features they threw out and now we have to wait a while before they do anything else. :-(

Agreed with all the comments posted re: missing functionality. I am constantly disappointed by the releases of new firmware -- I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE THIS DEVICE DOES NOT HAVE CUT AND PASTE OR A TASK LIST. Seriously. Lyrics? Multiple text message recipients? So great, now I too can be one of those annoying people who send "Merry Xmas Everyone!" text messages to everyone on my phone...i.e. an impersonal and meaningless spammer. :) But seriously -- c'mon Apple -- some of us actually had high hopes for the phone as a useful replacement to a Treo/Blackberry...with each new update I'm looking closer and closer at the "old" technology again...

My only question is how exactly the GPS works. It obviously does not use satellites to show a person exactly where they are on a map, because you can walk into building and the gps software can still track you. So this means that it is using the 3 tower triangulating method. So if this is in-fact the method they are using, why can't every phone that already have mapping programs built in to them, like the Blackberry Pearl 8100 from T-Mobile, use this system? Why wouldn't the BB pearl be able to track you on a map when it does have GPS for 911 to track you. Just some thoughts.. Phone accessories @ www.zstorez.com
