Helly Hansen Apparel Keeps You Warm When the World Will Not
Posted by Haroon Malik at 8:30 PM on January 2, 2008
Helly Hansen's Odin project is the name given to their newly completed, technologically advanced apparel system. The range, which will include various garments for extreme climates, incorporates the Odin PCM Soft-shell. The end result of the development is automatic temperature control, and we think that is promising an awful lot. Given our tendency to have reptile like responses to varying weather conditions, a fabric that is able to store heat and only release it when the external temperature falls drastically, sounds like the answer to our clothes based prayers. The Odin PCM Soft-shell fabric promises exactly that.
The heat balancing trickery is carried out by official Schoeller PCM smart textiles, but the versatility does not end there; the fabric, which is not only thermoregulating and waterproof, is also highly durable due to the non-binding nature of its construction. The Odin project textiles will initially be launched in a series of Helly Hansen jackets and pants, but if it does what it promises, expect to see the technology in all kinds of places. I suggest socks as a good starting point. Those who second my motion, show your support below.

If it's good enough for Captain Sig, it's good enough for me. Cause I'm a cowboy. On a steel horse I ride . . .

@plankbr: working for Helly Hansen I am a bit biased, but I am also constantly reprimanded for wearing my Theta SL Gore Tex paclite shell and easy rider jacket from arc'teryx. but even though I get a serious hard on anytime I see the new gear from arc I must say that Helly Hansen breath ability rating crush arc's usage of Gore Tex pro shell. also it saddens me to report that the newest stuff from arc is made in China :( bummer for me because I could justify the high price and had no problem paying retail when it was made in Vancouver...
PS still love Arc'teryx designs so much

@Headsign: They chose to call it Odin because of the fact that he is the main bad ass in Norse mythology. Helly Hansen = Norwegian company.
Also notice the adapted Valknut in the logo. Taken from Odin's own symbol meaning the knot of the slain. So go buy this jacket and slay the mountain. not people.

I have seen the samples of this product and can attest to it being all of what it claims to be and more! It is so light and unbelievably comfortable.
The PCM soft shell jacket will not be released until next season but you can all look forward to the Mountain Jacket, pants, patrol vest, and primaloft jacket starting Jan 15th.

When/if global warming hits, this will be obsolete.

Yeah. Only sad they probably chose to name it Odin in an attempt to compete against brands like Thor Steinar on the neo-nazi clothing market (their success on this market is maily due to HH being associated with "Heil Hitler" by the bonehead fashistionists).

HH makes some pretty nice stuff. I have a set of their heavy duty foul weather gear that I used to wear during sailboat races. Worked very well, and definitely durable.

Believe it or not, this collection was apparently designed in concert with some folks at/formerly from Arc'teryx, so the construction should be pretty solid. That said, the discotheque mesh baselayer fabric and bizarre springtime release date should just add another nail to Helly Hansen's rapidly descending coffin. All hail a once-venerable outdoor brand.
