Just purchase this Sony camcorder, it takes beautiful videos, but the 3CCD takes more vivid video but the Sony CMOS seens to have more accurate colour.
It takes 10.2MP photos and has excellent low light shooting and zoom.

This may be off topic, but can anyone suggest a solid below $800 1080p HD camcorder?

This is not 1080p camcorder. This is another Sony 1080i camcorder. Canon releases the first $900 1080p camcorder with the Canon Vixia HF10. Sony does not want to put 1080p in consumer HD camcorders yet cause they want to force semiprofetionnals in buying the $5000 and plus semiprofetionnal models for that feature.
A progressive HD camcorder is much better than interlaced. Hopefully the Canon 1080p camcorder will force Sony and Panasonic to unlock the 1080p and 720p modes on their AVCHD camcorders.

Very nice cam. But why can't they record a full 1080p to a high capacity Memory Stick Pro? He said only 1080i to the MS - that's lame, especially at the price that thing is gonna sell at.
But everything else is golden.

5.1 on camera surround sound mic: now you get to hear how noisy everything is going on behind the camera.

Wow - I was looking at the SR6 - I guess I need to up my budget! No more requiring the base for the USB connection (that change alone justifies this camera). Only question is quality of indoor poor light shooting - apparently some the other Sony HDs have had some suckage with that.
But again, wow!

does anybody know, if the HDDs in those cameras are user-replaceable? I mean, all those beyond 30 GB should be 1.8" harddisks, so can I just replace them by a bigger one? Last I remember there were 160 GB models by Toshiba.

I'd take 1080i over 1080p and twice the compression any day. What's the point in progressive recording if you lose half the resolution because of harsh compression whenever you move the camera?

Not to be an elitist. But (as far as I'm aware) the AVCHD format does not provide the sharp detail that HDV tapes provide. Which kinda wastes the 1080p.
Depending on whether or not you look at it the way I do.

A spec Gizmodo didn't mention, it has a 1/3.15-inch CMOS chip. It's not small, but I do wish Sony's best had a slightly bigger sensor (my lowly Canon HV20 has a 1/2.7" sensor - that's 15% bigger).

$1400 is great, I remember when any HD camcorders started at $50 grand. The Cannon base unit is cheap, but it doesn't come with the same features (flash drive) and doesn't include a Zeiss lens, so you get what you pay for.

He said 1080i. Can it do 1080p recording? Does it even matter?
