So to make sure that I understand this correctly... you take a shortcut in playing a fake guitar where you have 5 buttons, one "string" and a whammy bar and then you rock out but that darn whammy bar is just too hard to use manually and really you can't be bothered... so to overcome this you can:

A) Learn real guitar and score REAL chicks (hard concept for some I know)
B) Practice until you gain more skill (bonus: respect for being uber)
C) Cheat to make it even easier than ever.

Well hell, let's bring on the soldering Iron!!!

While we're at it, I'd like a guitar that auto-plays the songs for me so that I don't have to do any more of that pesky strumming... oh wait, they call that an Ipod...

I'm in Gre9del's camp. I have played piano for nearly 30 years, and guitar for just over 20. Personally, I love the Guitar Hero game, because it is fun. Yes, it's a game. Yes, it's a toy. And, just like games and toys are supposed to be, I find it to be mindless entertainment. I have no delusions that playing Guitar Hero on expert makes me a rock star (trust me, I've already been a rock star, and it's overrated...).

On the flip side, Guitar Hero has an entirely DIFFERENT skillset than playing a guitar. Period. Even some of the best rock guitarists in the world, endorsed or not, have commented on the fact that it is a challenging game period, even to someone who can wail on a real guitar. I have personally found that pianists are the best at guitar hero because it requires the same unconsious pattern mnemonics, especially with the fingers.
The long and short of it is that it is a great game, not a guitar lesson. And anyone who plays Guitar Hero and has a lick of sense will tell you the same. Any guitarist that doesn't have an inferiority complex will also not try to berate someone for likeing a game that happens to have a guitar shaped controller. I have yet to meet the Guitar Hero player that firmly believes that he can play guitar because he is an expert at guitar hero, and as we have already discussed, the opposite is ALSO true.

Ok, Here's the deal. I read the comments on giz a lot because there is usually a pretty high caliber of humor here that manages to crack me up while I get my gadget news. However, this thread is the exception. I think that both sides of this argument are missing the point.
Guitar Hero is a game. Period. Anyone who makes fun of someone for taking a game too seriously has no business reading a gadget blog geared towards just those sort of obsessive folks. Games are meant to be fun and challenging and Guitar Hero is both. Playing it isn't just like playing a guitar, as anyone who has done both (me) will tell you. It is however like playing a great game, which it is. In addition, the advanced levels of any Guitar Hero game (hard, or even expert) are as difficult as any game I've ever played. So the idea of Guitar Hero as a game for infants and those with infantile minds is ridiculous.

Well, I'm not the type to flame so I appreciate the feedback and I'll leave it at that. To explain my post to those who took it completely wrong, it was really more of a commentary on the need to cheat at a game which is fun, but also a TON easier to play than a real guitar (hence option B of practice until you get better at it)

I didn't mean to spark off the argument of "play a real guitar" vs "it's just a game" but for what it's worth, I play both the real thing and it's plastic counterpart and have fun with both.

That said, I stand by my statement that the need to cheat at GH is pretty pathetic... I do give kudos to the DIY attitude though on an intellectual level.
