Bluetooth Prosthesis Helps Man Walk, Kick More Ass
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:00 AM on January 26, 2008
The only time we use Bluetooth is to yap about in our cars while we're driving or for transferring photos to and from our computer, but Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Bleill is using it to help him walk again. The Iraq veteran has dual prosthesis with Bluetooth transmitters on board that sends signals between each motor, which updates each piece of the legs on what the others are doing, how it's moving, and whether or not they need to make adjustments.
Older models of computer-controlled legs have to be "programmed" via wire by laptop computers before the amputee can use them. Those legs required more movement from the amputee's remaining thigh muscle to generate motion in the prosthetic leg. Because of built-in motors, the Bluetooth legs allow Bleill to walk longer before he tires."We've compared walking several laps in both sets of legs and one, your legs come out burning and tired and these, you know, you sometimes are not even breaking a sweat yet."
We weren't kidding when we said it helps him kick ass. "So sometimes the leg kicks harder than I want it to, or farther, and then I start perpetuating, and I start moving faster than I really want to." [CNN]

I understand the advantage of wireless communication between his computer-controlled legs, but wouldn't be more reliable and fast and easy just to use a wire through his pants?

2 things..
one .. I don't think he'll ever be able to fly on an airplane again.. let alone get past the front gate of an airport..
two .. I'm not a bastard like this - but we all know you can change tv channels, control your computer or even little robotic devices via cellphone bluetooth.. if someone were to 'hack' his bluetooth legs.. could they make him run around and dance? ..

LAMO, that's terrible. Even if someone managed to take control of them, he'd still figure out a way to find the person responsible in order to deliver a Marine-style beating. If not, there's always the one thing better than a pair of BT-enabled legs...Chuck Norris' number in your BT-enabled cell phone.

Actually, Jason messed it up. It's his entire body EXCEPT for the legs that is the prosthesis.

War and tech advances go hand-in-hand and this one's legacy will be bionic men with more than enough test subjects to pick from.

I believe he made all those comments to be comedic. I don't know. He may have made mention when he said "Flamewar ON!!!! (all this was jokes people)".

Duh, you don't pay for the parts, you get forced into working for the government. Just like Stone Cold Steve Austin. Wait I think I got that messed up some where.

Still doesn't make the stumps any less gross for his wife. Stem cell research "For The 'Regenerative' Win"... Oh, thats right, loose my limbs in a war that means absolutely nothing and come home to a highly restrictive stem cell research policy "cause it ain't christian".
I wonder how much money he'll have to spend at walmart on food after he is forced to pay for those bluetooth legs.
I'm sure after he figures out all the times his wife was cheating on him while he was over there, they'll be constant arguments that always end in her turning on the microwave to disrupt the BT signal, the legs give out, and he drops to the floor with her screaming "Look at you... pathetic!".
(could be quite comical actually)
Cue the Maury Povich episode a few months later when she pops out a kid:
"You are not the father"
I'm sorry, I'd eat a bullet before dealing with major amputation.
Flamewar ON!!!! (all this was jokes people)

Obviously not a Verizon customer or even his prosthetic leg system would be "differently-abled".

It always take war to advance medical science.
I guess they have plenty of human guinea pigs to try
out new prosthetics and procedures.

@SeventhExile:
1) It'd prob be the same idea of having a pacemaker. And i think there'd be a sleep mode or something that could be turned off to abide to FAA regulations until in the air.
2) I'm pretty sure there'd be some form of encryption to not allow that to happen. And i doubt anybody could tell them from traditional prosthetic legs (or prosthetics even for that matter) if u were the common passerby. Unless u have some sick friends =o)

I would never trust wireless for anything like this.
Just think of the interference problem.

@Seiven: even if we produced the technology it would never, ever gain traction unless you could control the damage by one either falling out of the sky or slamming into a building. we'd need invisible force fields or something.

@ANoel:
Don't be rediculous!! Verizon would never allow that profile to be enabled. It would take away revenue from their basic "stomp all over the customer" package, not to mention the optional "bend customer over and apply corporate foot to ass" upgrade.

I lost my right arm to bone cancer when I seven. i just made 25 and I would like to see them make an arm with this technology. I would like to do push ups and bench presses, and maybe cave somebody's face in during a fight!
