@89macrunner:
adding to myself:
yes i know this uses an external recorder that hopefully is pretty decent and digitaly records the audio to the ipod

Wow this might actually replace what the minidisc has been doing for years.
Too bad ipods still sound like garbage compared to some other mp3 players

I am not into podcast recording and even I think that for what you can get and the price, it is a great device. The sound quality would be an issue but since it will record externally, using the ipod as storage, I have to assume that you can modify the bit rate?

This will prolly sound great.. It's for ENG not making an album. Ipods sound like whatever you put in them and whatever you listen to them on. I use UE triple.fi 10 pros and non compressed music and my ipod sounds great. Mp3ers haul 80gbs or crap they will never listen to in a million years but true audiophiles carry just enough for enjoyment ad rotates music as needed for the mood.
Remember GIGO people.
I will still stick to my ZOOM H4. You do get what you pay for.

@89macrunner: Maybe it's what you put in your iPod, mine sounds better than every other player I've had.
If you're listening to techno, then yes, it will sound like crap because you're listening to something that has no right to even be called music.

I like the look of this, but it is a bit late to the party. I'm thinking of a Zune for my next DAP, and a Microtrack ii for my next field recorder. I'm just kinda done with add ons for proprietary connectors...

"$100 retail for 2 preamps +a/d conversion+onboard mic+speaker? "
Sorry Knowles, but I think you're stretching a bit. There's no A/D conversion--it uses the A/D already in the iPod and records to WAV format, 16 bit/44.1khz through the Voice Memo application.
I'd like to know if it will provide 48v phantom power to a decent condenser mic. Some of the low-end chunk doesn't have the juice to power a decent capsule.

Too bad it looks like a crap multimeter...
And Joe Blow isn't going to take his Ipod out of the case and risk it getting scratched.
